"Cincinnati Observed" said the buildings here were torn down for a hotel that never happened.  I think a park w/ development fronting 5th would be nice.  A place to walk the dog, get grass between your toes . . . But that's just me.

 

 

 

 

I think Plum Street should be two-way from Third to Fifth.  Otherwise one doesn't experience this view much.

PigBoy, I believe it's everything within a block of 4th Street (oy vey) but I'm not sure.

Very nice!  I like the block with Campanello's on it.  Very Philly-esque.  Needs to get rid of the false front on the first floor.

BTW...Fourth St. Historic District (Natl Reg of Hist Places)...W to E--Central to Plum, N to S--Fifth to McFarland (street between Fourth and Third).

I saw my old apartment hehe! nice shots.. I heard some sad news about the building to the right of the old CGL&C CO. building,the one that is for sale by owner.From what I have heard it is condemned and slated for demolition..It is the last building on west fourth that is vacant...It is going to be turned into a parking lot..NOOOOO!

i remember seeing pics of that condo unit that is supposed to go into that parking lot too... if i can find them again i'll post them. middle earth development was going to do it, looked like an interesting project.

 

that's a shame about the building next to CGL&C. i've stopped and looked at that building a number of times. they want 220k for it, but the structure looks a bit questionable. if you stand across the street, the roof has a slant to it. would definitely take some money to stabilize it. it also backs directly into the buildings behind it, so no real rear access or parking. still a shame though, it could be a nice building. it will be weird to have that gap there and see a parking lot

 

now if only someone would take the initiative with 5th street across from the convention center. those poor buildings need someone to love them

It's definitely ashame.  They sure as hell won't get alot of parking for what they are losing.

very sharp tour. all totally cinci-esque, but i immediately thought philly too when i saw that campenello's shot. yes somebody please renovate those cool old buildings they are dying for some love and gentrification!

I really hope that the city will take the old Albee Theatre Museum entrance and place it in the Cincinnati History Museum and redo the entire facade of the convention center.  The entrance way has no business on the convention center and lookds half ass.

If your going to live in downtown cincinnati, Fourth st is the best place, it is the most active and safe area downtown. I really loved living on that street! Bengal sundays can be a bit crazy, WHO-DEYS will drive you nuts, but it's worth the experience.

i'd say 4th is a fairly safe area if you are a human, as in you don't have to be worried about getting mugged. but if you're a car, you've got plenty to be afraid of. the # of cars that are broken into around here is excessive. one girl in my building got her's broken into 3 times in a row. mine got hit once, but i managed to grab an inside spot after that. about everyone here has had it happen at least once, and it is a pretty regular occurance to find a pile of glass in the parking lot from the latest victim. i'm not sure if it's just our rear parking lot that attracts the breakins (no-cameras, pretty quiet and no one hanging around) or if it happens to other buildings/streets/lots, either way though it's somethign that drives people away.

Ok, I don't know what happened over the weekend but the building demolition in question on 4th has begun . . . On my way home this evening I noticed the demolition truck and the roof gone.  Was there a fire?  Roof cave-in?  Or just the beginning of the end for the building?  Sad.

 

 

 

 

they started the demo on saturday, i'm not really sure what their plan was but somehow the roof caved in. i was looking at it this evening and it is indeed sad. the building was in bad shape, but not beyond hope. i'm not sure how they plan on sqeezing a parking lot in there...

I have to agree with that statement, I saw a Man throw a brick into the back window of a car on plum st while brushing my teeth. I was amazed how fast it happened.The man smashed the brick into the window jumped in retrieved the purse and was running down plum in about 4 seconds flat . I always left my cigarette tray open and glove box open and never had a problem. The bums will steal pennies out of your ashtray. It's not worth the cost of reparing a window so take everything out of sight.

speaking of car beak-ins. saw another one this morning. nice new 350z in our parking lot got hit. ouch. seems like it happens every couple days. you're right though, they'll take everything they can get. when they hit my car they took all teh change out of my car, even took teh owners manuals. along with my digital camera and valentine 1 radar detector i had hidden in my center console :( the damage to my car was a bit more than a broke window however, total damages to the interior and exterior (dent, glass scratches, etc) was around 3700$

 

i do like this neighborhood though, it's sad to see that building go. i often looked at it and wondered what kind of investment it would have taken to turn it into something. i'd love to see some sort of coffee house go into one of the vacat retail slots here on 4th. something reminissent of highlands (my fav) or sitwells's or something. right now there is no decent hang-out around here.

Im sorry to hear about your car that really sucks! I was thinking th same thing exactly about a coffee house in one of the vacant buildings. Developers were trying to get a restraunt in the 1 story building next to the kinsey flats last I heard.

yeah, it seems they are having a hard time filling the vacancies on the street level of kinsey. remax took one space, but the rest is empty and i haven't heard much about potential tennents. a coffee shop would be a perfect tennant in my opinion. a resturant would be cool too. here's to hoping...

Seems that Cincy is a lot like Pittsburgh when it comes to the downtown street widths from what I can see.....they seem pretty narrow.  I like that look...Cleveland streets are pretty wide downtown, but I think it takes away from the crowded downtown look....just my opinion.

^I believe Cincinnati's downtown property lines are 66 feet versus 60 feet for the cross streets in Manhattan.  This is why Cincinnati's streets typicall have 4 lanes instead of three, with two lanes being parking/loading lanes. 

 

As for car break-ins in this area, my brother's car, which is now my car, was broken into in fall of 2004 on the 300 block of Race St.  The passenger side window was smashed and about $500 worth of cd's stolen.

Not that it is an excuse, but if you are going to park on the street, leaving $500 worth of CD's in your car probably isn't the best idea.

I agree with you about the park at 5th and Plum, that is a major entry to downtown from 75, anything but parking would be great!

^Well we are talking about my brother, here, who is too stupid to have made extra CD's for his car or smarter still buy his CD's used on Amazon, copy them, then resell them, which is what I do.
