Posted October 19, 200618 yr After reading this article it got me thinking, does any of the talk show hosts of WLW live in Ohio? http://news.cincinnati.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061019/SPT02/310190036/-1/CINCI The Two Angry Guys, Bill Cunningham, Mike McConnnell & Andy Furman all live in NKY, what about the others? You can sense the anti Cincinnati rhetoric on Cincinnati's most prominant radio station. Is it time that WLW, thin some of these NKY yokels out and bring in more well rounded pro urban talk show hosts?
October 19, 200618 yr Bill Cunningham is a bigoted piece of shit. He belongs in Kentucky and they can keep him.
October 19, 200618 yr Cunningham was born in NKY, but I thought he lived in Anderson...and I thought McConnell lived in one of the northern suburbs...but I certainly couldn't say that for sure...
October 20, 200618 yr ^I thought Cunningham lived in Anderson as well. Sometimes the guy makes good points, and sometimes he fits kendall's discription perfectly. LOL, one can tell you are new to Cincy monte, I don't think I've ever heard the 700 after the WLW, you always hear "700 WLW", or many times just "700."
October 20, 200618 yr Just thought I would throw this in for grins. It's one of my favorite quotes. I don't care for everything that McConnell says, but this one makes you think. Caller: "During the Reagan years, the Rich got Richer and the Poor got Poorer." McConnell: "No, that's wrong. During the Reagan years, the Rich got Richer, the Middle Class got Richer, and the Poor got Richer. But, the NUMBER of poor people increased, because poor people had a lot of kids." Food for thought. Ok, back to the original topic.
October 20, 200618 yr I always think of the whole crew as a bunch of crass guys telling jokes to each other like it's 1950, and it is alright to refer to a female co-worker as a "broad" who is supposed to get them coffee. October 20, 200618 yr Maybe it is all the references to NKY that made me think that Cunningham lived in Boone county or some generic NKY suburb.
October 20, 200618 yr I thought he lived in Madera on Camargo Canyon. I did some services on that street a few times.
October 20, 200618 yr Cunningham was born and raised in Madeira, I believe, and was a public defender for many years before starting his radio show. The show started around 1987 as him simply offering free legal advice to callers. It was always an evening show until around 1998 when they started THE C.H.O.P., the Cunningham Hour Of Power, when he came in for an hour between McConnell and Gary Burbank's shows. Then McConnell moved to the morning and Cunningham moved his entire show to the daytime slot and quit practicing law. I still remember when Jerry Springer had Cunningham on his show when it was filmed in the Westin lobby, that was hilarious, Cunningham fielded a question from a lady and began his response with "Well the first thing, toots, is..." Around 1994 he was in his Ra phase, and sang the national anthem dressed as the Egyptian sun god Ra at the Cyclones game, yet another incredible Cunningham moment, this is still why callers say "Hail Ra" as a greeting. There was also the 48 hours of Cunningham around 99, when he allegedly fired everyone at the station and did everyone's show continuously, with the exception of the Truckin' Bozo, which I think was also around the time of the Gator Caper. 1990 was awesome, when this pessimist named Norman kept calling and predicting the Reds' demise during the wire-to-wire season, and then in 1991 during the Iraq war Cunningham would go on these incredible 8 minute riffs where the producer would start playing the national anthem in the background and he'd build it up with the skill of a manic southern preacher and it would all resolve perfectly as the anthem ended with an F-16 flyover and all faded to break. I mean, you'd be sitting there listen to this guy go on and on and realize you hadn't breathed for 2 minutes, it was that outrageous. You were certain that you just listened to the most ridiculous thing being broadcast in the world at that moment. I can't count the number of times I've almost veered off the road laughing at this stuff, the closest was the time when he changed the lyrics to White Rabbit: "...one pill makes you small...and the one Jim Scott gave you does nothing at all!".
October 20, 200618 yr And to call Cunningham a bigot is wildly incorrect, he's an extremely intelligent man who has been all around the world, has represented hundreds of black men in court. Intelligent people can be bigots, as can people who have black friends and represent black people in court. Even conceding, for the sake of argument, that Cunningham is not himself a bigot, I stand by my comment based on the viewpoints he espouses on his WLW radio talk show. His latest tirades have been directed at Mexicans, btw. I listened to him use the unfortunate incident of that guy who recently got attacked and killed by some immigrants up in Mason to launch a racist tirade against everyone from Mexico, then everyone hispanic, then everyone whose first language was not English. So if this guy is not a bigot, he sure as hell propagates bigoted ideas under the cover of his own personal opinion and therefore remains a piece of shit.
October 20, 200618 yr Cunningham is definitely a smart guy. His old legal help show was actually a pretty good thing. Nowadays he is just a controversialist with a right wing bent. He has really sunk pretty low. I do remember him on Phil Donahue telling the world that he would "go down to Fountain Square and....." I remember how silly he must have sounded to a national audience that had no idea what Fountain Square was. I am pretty sure he would promote the city if he could profit from it.
October 20, 200618 yr Furman silent on, off the air Radio host stuck in controversy over remarks BY JOHN KIESEWETTER AND MARK CURNUTTE | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITERS Andy Furman, a WLW-AM radio host, has been suspended for on-air comments he made about Bengals wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh. Darryl Parks, operations manager for Clear Channel's four AM stations here, refused to confirm or deny that Furman was suspended. Three phone messages for WLW-AM general manager Karrie Sudbrack Thursday were not returned. "You know we don't talk about personnel matters," Parks said. Contacted at his Florence home, Furman, 56, refused to answer when asked if he had been suspended. "I can't say," Furman said. That city where that incident happened was Hamilton, not Mason. I pretty much agree with the rest of what you said. Jake has been pretty disconnected with Cincinnati over the years. References to 1990 prove my point. You could wipe the whole entire staff of WLW and I would be happier. Scott Sloan is also another one that spews his ignorant rants about the city. I called his show once and gave him a piece of my mind and he hung up on me of course. I didn't fit into his agenda. Cincinnati is definitely filled with some suburban ass clowns that know little about my beloved city but think they do... After all they read the Enquirer and listen to Willie ;)

After all they read the Enquirer and listen to Willie ;) Who cares about all this. People need to quit thinking that these programs are supposed to be Newstalk and take them for what it is, entertainment. Cunningham and Sloan are both blowhards on the air who say outrageous things in order to get ratings and to entertain. I once knew a guy who used to produce the Cunningham show and he said Cunningham did not believe 3/4 of the stuff he actually said on the air. It is all a giant persona for entertainment value only. Just like a tv actor, and lets face it they are pretty good at this too since they draw a lot of listeners who seem to be entertained. Most educated people who listen to these shows take it for what it is entertainment, Granted there are a lot of idiots out there that may believe it on its face but that is life. The point of stations lie WLW is to make money and get ratings so they will cater their programming to what will draw the most ratings and return on their investment. People need to look skeptically on the information they receive with this bent in mind. If you are listening to the radio to hear real news and information listen to NPR. It may be less entertaining, but you may be more informed.
October 23, 200618 yr Urban Legend 267 is that Gary Burbank does his show from his home/studio in Florida. :-) (though last l checked, Gary does have a home in NKY, but owns a restaurant in Cincy) Back to reality, Cunningham has been on WLW for well over 20 years. Cunningham did a bogus stunt back in '84 or '85 where he claimed he could defeat a Xavier female basketball player in horse. Billy lost. The Day shift Billy took only came about in the last 10 years (with the creation of "corporate radio" and 3 hour shifts). For most of the 80s it was McConnell (or Pat Barry before him) from 10-2 then Burbank from 2-6 (then the sportstalk show with Trumpy/MacWilliams/Collingsworth/Tracy Jones/Furman/Dennison/etc...)
October 23, 200618 yr Bill Cunningham was once sued for civil battery for inviting a national anti-smoking advocate to the studio where he and a number of station personel all blew cigar smoke in his face. I think he settled.
October 23, 200618 yr That city where that incident happened was Hamilton, not Mason. I follow Hamilton news extremely closely, and I'm positive nothing of the sort ever happened there. I'm not saying it is Mason, but it wasn't Hamilton. I think I actually heard the story Kendall was talking about, and I'm thinking it was in the Mason area as well, yet I can't remember. I would remember if it was Hamilton, no doubt.
October 24, 200618 yr Bill Cunningham was once sued for civil battery for inviting a national anti-smoking advocate to the studio where he and a number of station personel all blew cigar smoke in his face. I think he settled. That was referenced in the Cincinnati Kid's post (concerning Furman) above.

I think I was in California when it happened.
October 24, 200618 yr ^ The story he was talking about was the guy who got killed outside of a Mason bar by what were referred to in the press as illegal immigrants. I forget the bar.
October 24, 200618 yr >(though last l checked, Gary does have a home in NKY, but owns a restaurant in Cincy) And Cunningham did have a chain of 4 sports bars at one time (the Willie's Sports Cafes that are still around town), I don't know who else invested in them but I'm sure he made quite a bit when he got out and I suppose that's where a lot of his personal wealth came from, aside from his only having one kid and his wife also being an attorney and judge. I remember customers used to call the show from the bar's pay phone and make phony complaints about the service or the food and Cunningham would act all serious like he was going to have the head of whoever was responsible, he would exhort "I'm launching an investigation!". >Back to reality, Cunningham has been on WLW for well over 20 years. Cunningham did a bogus stunt back in '84 or '85 where he claimed he could defeat a Xavier female basketball player in horse. Billy lost.
October 24, 200618 yr ^ The story he was talking about was the guy who got killed outside of a Mason bar by what were referred to in the press as illegal immigrants. I forget the bar. It is called the "Mason Pub" and is located in a crappy old strip mall on 42 near Tylersville Road next to one of the greatest pizza joints in Cincinnati called Aponte's. (NY Style)
October 26, 200618 yr Bill Cunningham is a bigoted piece of shit. He belongs in Kentucky and they can keep him. Your comments are hypocritical. As a native Kentuckian, I consider your comment to be every bit as bigoted as you claim Bill Cunningham is. It is a thinly veiled insult against a group of people (Kentuckians). bigot: one who regards or treats the members of a group (as a racial or ethnic group, Kentuckians) with hatred and intolerance. Congratulations on being what you supposedly despise. So if this guy is not a bigot, he sure as hell propagates bigoted ideas under the cover of his own personal opinion and therefore remains a piece of shit. His base assertion is that these crimes would not otherwise happen if illegal aliens were actually deported for breaking the law or prevented from being in the country in the first place. This logic applies regardless of race. It just so happens most illegal aliens are Mexican (note that we don't have a Canadian immigration problem). How would you feel if a friend or family member were killed by a drunk driving illegal alien?
October 26, 200618 yr Sorry to jump in on this one, but I am irritated by the endless smearing of Hispanics on 700 (it seems to be the topic whenever I simply want to check in on news). Anyway, if a friend or family member was killed by an illegal immigrant, I imagine someone would feel the same as if they were killed by anyone else, distraught. The overwhelming majority of crimes in America are committed by people born in America, but we don't hear about the epidemic of native born people committing murder. Additionally, by the logic WLW is using, we could say if someone's great grandparents had just stayed in Germany or Ireland, their killer child would have never been able to commit the crime - it could be an endless cycle. 700's propaganda is bigoted because it hurts all Hispanics in the area, painting them with a broad brush, legal or not.
October 27, 200618 yr Gary Burbank has more of a KY connection than just a house. He was a popular DJ in Louisville in the 1970s, starting out on top 40 radio, WAKY, then moving to one of the two big local stations WHAS. At WAKY: At WHAS: ..top row, second from left: More pix more pix here WAKY always had some wild DJs...others where Bill Baily and Coyote Calhoun. WHAS had a good talker back then too..Milton Metz, the old guy in glasses next to Burbank on the group pix. His show was "Metz Here"..it was a call-in talk radio show. Metz was somewhat liberal, too, which is pretty rare nowadays in talk radio. The only liberal on nowadays that I've heard was the Ed Shultz guy, though I understand Springer does a liberal show, too.
October 27, 200618 yr Anyway, if a friend or family member was killed by an illegal immigrant, I imagine someone would feel the same as if they were killed by anyone else, distraught. This goes without saying. I know you didn't miss my point that bad. Again, they are not legally here so they should have been removed already due to this crime, therefore preempting their ability to murder others. The overwhelming majority of crimes in America are committed by people born in America, but we don't hear about the epidemic of native born people committing murder. You're right about the majority of crimes. Actually, we do hear about them every day. There is a thread on this forum that addresses Cincinnati's crime problem and the saddest part of it is the murder rate. The fact they are American isn't what's news. When the murder is committed by an illegal...that is news. Incorrect, that's completely different, if the child were born in the US, the child would be a legal citizen...therefore not breaking the law by being here...and not as notorious in the eyes of the media. Do you have evidence that ALL hispanics in the area have been hurt? Try not to take it as propaganda...as stated above it is controversialism. The viewpoint and how it is expressed is part opinion part fact and meant to spur discussion, i.e. angry phone callers.

Do you have evidence that ALL hispanics in the area have been hurt? Try not to take it as propaganda...as stated above it is controversialism. The viewpoint and how it is expressed is part opinion part fact and meant to spur discussion, i.e. angry phone callers. 1) The point is regardless of them being here illegally or not does not make them more likely to commit a crime - the implication is that all illegal immigrants are bad, when the fact is most metros with a high percentage of Hispanics are prospering much more than those with low percentages. The Federal government has taken a "wink and nod" approach until recently - trying to enforce this at a local level only makes that region look intolerant. 2) Yet we don't hear "legal citizen beat a man to death today". I am pointing out again that they are perpetuating the stereotype that all illegal immigrants are bad. I will concede from a news standpoint I understand the headline, but WLW will pound on something like this for weeks. 3) Here is one of a few articles talking about the impact of the propaganda based on one of Willie's favorite people, Sheriff Jones. I don't know if this article mentions it, but at one point Cleveland sent representatives to recruit some legal (and I suspect illegal) Hispanic businesses, who are ostracized every time this issue gets hot: http://www.journal-news.com/n/content/oh/story/news/local/2006/09/19/hjn091906sheriff.html 4) I have said this before, but I realize Willie is in this business to create controversy and ratings, but many of his listeners buy his story as fact. Additionally, he tends to stump for political candidates who share his views (at least the ones he gives on the show) so I still see this a propaganda. I think our point of view is just completely different - you have a black and white interpretation - if they are illegal immigrants they are breaking the law and have to go. I believe that for most of the history of this issue, the Federal government has made them illegal in name only, while inviting the immigrants by their border security (or lack thereof). I believe that the unofficial US government stance is that they knew it was good for our economy and are just now taking it seriously as it has become a political issue. I also think that until this is finally enforced we should encourage the influx, and take advantage of the increase in population, buying power, and diversity. To be one of the only large metros to make this such a big issue of this (by talk shows, county sheriffs, county commissioners etc.) is just bad form. Hell -even Milwaukee had Hispanic day for the Brewers (or Cerveceros) and sold out the game - I am sure there were no illegals. I guess this should have gone over to the illegal immigration thread.
November 2, 200618 yr Furman ousted from WLW BY JOHN KIESEWETTER | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER Link to Memo concerning firing: http://news.enquirer.com/assets/AB48288111.PDF After 18 years on WLW-AM (700), in which he offended many listeners with his bombastic comments, a public dispute with a Bengals player cost Andy Furman his job. Furman, 56, was fired Wednesday, nearly three weeks after being suspended with pay on Oct. 13 for calling wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh a "racist" during the station's weeknight "SportsTalk" show on Oct. 6. The remark came a day after Furman had ripped the player on the air for missing a paid appearance that night on "SportsTalk" during the team's bye week. The decision came from Clear Channel's corporate headquarters in San Antonio, Texas, and not from the Kenwood-based station, says Janet Abary, Furman's attorney. Houshmandzadeh's attorney had contacted the San Antonio office after the incident. Controversy nothing new to fiery Furman A look at some of Andy Furman's controversial moments: 2004: Furman angered Ken Griffey Jr. by criticizing the Reds outfielder for calling loud, abusive fans "clowns" in a USA Today story. 1995: Furman was banned from appearing on Bengals-related radio shows by team president Mike Brown. 1994: Furman called Reds general manager Jim Bowden a "liar" and "weasel." That same year he referred to University of Cincinnati president Joseph A. Steger as "Adolf Steger" and later apologized. Early 1990s: Furman went to court to get access to a Crosstown Shootout game after UC ran out of media credentials. After entering the arena with a ticket, he was stopped from broadcasting from the press table because he didn't have a credential. 1991: Furman blew cigar smoke in the face of anti-smoking advocate Ahron Leichtman during an appearance on Bill Cunningham's talk show. Leichtman sued. 1980s: Furman, later a race-track promoter at Latonia Race Track (now Turfway Park), was fired from Monticello Raceway in New York for a "Ku Klux Klan Night" promotion. November 2, 200618 yr Well, I'm glad they can finally move on to hiring his replacement, because while Seg does some stuff well, his call-in show is just unlistenable...props to him for stepping up and filling in, but it's really bad radio...
November 2, 200618 yr ^^ I think I was still in HS the last time I heard Tom Dinkel's name. Now can I get an Andy MacWilliams reference?
November 2, 200618 yr Well, I'm glad they can finally move on to hiring his replacement, because while Seg does some stuff well, his call-in show is just unlistenable...props to him for stepping up and filling in, but it's really bad radio... Seg is about as exciting as waiting in line at the bank. He's only good playing the straight man to someone else's over the top act.
November 3, 200618 yr >Now can I get an Andy MacWilliams reference? Speaking of high school, I went to high school with his son, who was a pretty regular guy from what I remember.
November 4, 200618 yr Bill Cunningham was born in Covington and grew up in Deer Park. He attended law school (I believe) at The University of Toledo. He resides on Keller Rd in Indian Hill. Based on his knowledge of the law, he appears to be a highly competent attorney and seems to be very intelligent and factual being able to engage in logical, critical thinking (a trait often lost on the factually challenged and over-emotional segment of society). Regarding his political orientation, it is unfortunate that some must resort to name calling because they take issue with his philosophical conservative views but this is becoming more typical as emotions are used in a feeble attempt to trump facts and reality- probably the logical result and extension of the parallel experience in the decline in non biased primary, secondary and university education as many pass through but have not been challenged academically. But, getting back to Cunningham - he is bombastic for certain but that gets ratings and slots on national news programs. Whoever said he does not really believe what he says is incorrect. Incidentally, he started his political life as a democrat and became more conservative over time as he apparently critically observed and evaluated the "do as I say not as I do political crowd", and found them wanting, ethically. This revelation has come to many other Americans, myself included, who continue to make or have long since made that transition following the rude awakenings of the real (not theoretical) work a day world and parental responsibilities while going about their business in an ever increasingly truly dangerous and violent world. For that "violation" in America one frequently risks being villified and insulted by all sorts of "intellectuals above the common fray" (reference, for example, the poetess princess Giovanni of Cincinnati in her fountain square unsolicited and gratuitous attack on a local politician)-individuals who otherwise superficially and disengenuosly are the safeguardians of their "selective tolerance". Just don't disagree with them and everything will be OK. And now, if you want to challenge these assertions, please do so and if possible, without crass name calling. BTW- Mc Connell (another dangerous conservative) lives in West Chester last time I heard. But enough about the hard choices of politics and living and the risks run for making them. Anybody hear the one about how Cincinnati went from having the most staggering (as a percent of) population loss over the past 10 years to actually being only the second other major city in Ohio (Columbus being the other) to gain population over that time. The mistake occurred because new housing development somehow went unnoticed by the census bureau during data collection (once again, your tax dollars at work).
November 4, 200618 yr Er...welcome to the forum? It's always encouraging when someone's first post explains how ignorant and emotional and uneducated we all are, then asks us to stay above crass name calling. Yes, we've discussed the census data quite a bit in this thread: http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php?topic=10935.0
November 4, 200618 yr Not really name calling per se- just an observation of how simple it is for some to dismiss others with vulgar one liners. If you notice, while taking exception, I made no vulgar comments- sarcastic, yes. Anyway, thank you for the "welcome" (I think).
November 4, 200618 yr Not really name calling per se- just an observation of how simple it is for some to dismiss others with vulgar one liners. If you notice, while taking exception, I made no vulgar comments- sarcastic, yes. Anyway, thank you for the "welcome" (I think). You take Cunningham too personally, his show is not a news program, it is merely entertainment. Air America is the same but on the liberal side. The goal of both are to get ratings, and if they influence the idiot masses, so be it. These shows are no different than ESPN Radio or Jim Rome (who I personally feel is hilarious). If you want real news and political debate, listen to NPR.
November 4, 200618 yr ...And I quote grasscat, "I love it when people come into a message board and immediately begin to mix it up. I mean, Jesus, at least say hello! Do you walk into a room full of strangers, pick a random woman, and tell her she's fat?"
November 6, 200618 yr ...And I quote grasscat, "I love it when people come into a message board and immediately begin to mix it up. I mean, Jesus, at least say hello! Do you walk into a room full of strangers, pick a random woman, and tell her she's fat?" Are we not supposed to do this? I'm sorry, I'm going to have to plead ignorance. Ususally I don't comment on her size though, more about her outragous makeup or the fact that you can smell her before you walk in the door.
December 22, 200618 yr Not really name calling per se- just an observation of how simple it is for some to dismiss others with vulgar one liners. Too bad Air America can't get any ratings and is failing miserably while Billy Cunningham and Mike McConnell are on 700 and XM or Sirius (I can't remember which) and gaining ratings. Just an observation.
September 10, 201212 yr Bill Cunningham is a bigoted piece of sh!t. He belongs in Kentucky and they can keep him. Couldn't resist bumping this(saw it in a related field), if that's the case, why all the minority guests on his TV talk show? And I bet he's staying NYC at least part of the year. He's getting a second season of "Bill". Is he still doing the radio gig?
September 10, 201212 yr That's what is amazing. To show you how shifty the guy is, on his national TV chat show he's dealing with minority domestic disputes, then he gets on the radio in Cincinnati and puts down minorities. What's amazing is that the people who take his radio show seriously don't realize that the whole thing is an act -- the guy is not even really a Republican.

Yeah, to veer OT just a bit(if ok with the mods), he would regularly call out the Cincinnati meteorologists when the snow and ice would miss us, or just be rain. I believe it was 2008, he had on Derek Beasley(WLWT), Jude Redfield, Jim O'Brien, and the big finale, TIM HEDRICK(known as Headrock on the air). It was all funny until Hedrick and him started going at it on the air about Michelle Boutilette and Willie calling her "Booootilazeeee" :D I really don't think Timmy was kidding with Willie, he sounded pissed. I'll pm you the clip when I find it in my bookmarks. The show still actually works in the WLW archives
