^Talk about boring Euclid Ave storefronts!

I don't think we ever did quite resolve the enormous size discrepancy between the Cleveland mart and the proposed Nashville. Even if the reporting was bad and a big chunk of that one is actually convention center, I think it was still a huge difference. Hopefully it will all be moot soon :)

Speaking to the MMCI as a catalyst for downtown, there will soon be a number of art galleries opening on Euclid Ave., which will make things more walkable and attractive.

^What's this now?

Should it be in this thread?

As 2 moderators are asking... Downtown property owners pay a special tax to fund curtsy patrols, litter cleanup. etc. At the last meeting, it was decided to encourage galleries to occupy storefronts to make a more favorable impression of the Avenue. More information available @ Downtown Alliance. The End.

I've always thought that it should be the "Art and Design District".

Interesting link!

What are the actual boundaries for the "District Of Design"?

^ yeah i was wondering about that too. looks about right. e13th to e25th? basically csu and a little more to the west in downtown.

this is a fine idea to push and the website looks sharp -- the milan of the midwest!

A new museum will celebrate Cleveland industrial designer Viktor Schreckengost

CLEVELAND, Ohio — A museum devoted to the life and work of Cleveland artist and industrial designer Viktor Schreckengost will soon blossom on Superior Avenue, just east of downtown.

The nonprofit Viktor Schreckengost Foundation has signed a three-year lease on 2,450 square feet of space on the ground floor of the renovated Tower Press Building, an early 20th-century factory turned office and loft building at 1900 Superior Ave.

The opening will be in April or May, although no specific date has been set.

The goal is to boost awareness of Schreckengost as a great American industrial designer and of Cleveland's history as a center of design. Schreckengost died in 2008 at age 101.

............................

The museum will also exhibit designs by the Cleveland-based Rose Iron Works, plus student designs from the Cleveland Institute of Art.

The idea is to promote Cleveland as a center for industrial design, a goal that dovetails with a separate initiative by the art institute and CSU to create a District of Design in the eastern end of downtown Cleveland.

The district, conceived several years ago, is intended to entice furniture manufacturers and product-design companies to establish permanent showrooms in the area, and to foster the growth of related companies in surrounding blocks.

Glad to hear. Schreckengost needs to be remembered and celebrated locally.

I don't know if this has been mentioned before, but walking home from class last night I noticed the floorspace at 1603 Euclid being set up by some girls with signs saying "yellow cake". I looked it up and found this:

Does anyone have any details on this?

The FAQ on the wesite said they are working towards opening a storefront in downtown so maybe it's a permanent shop or maybe it's a temp store. Either way its great to hear about potential retail downtown.

It's a Pop Up Shop for Valerie Mayen's fashion label, Yellowcake. Valerie was on this season's Project Runway, and she's a HUGE Cleveland booster

My address inspires my collection

The shop's scheduled to be open the first few weeks of February and will be stocked with pins, hair pieces, t-shirts, hats, accessories, and coats.

Yay! I was wondering when Valerie would finally open up a shop for her label. She was very good on the first few episodes of that season of Project Runway (she sort of fell victim to stress later on). I see a lot of potential in her label and she really loves Cleveland! Here's to hoping she gains some well-deserved attention.

We've had some fantastic downtown retail news in the past couple weeks.

I'm wondering if her store prices will be a little cheaper than her website, because most people can't afford her prices.

She'll probably have to sell more affordable clothes at her store if she wants to be successful. However, a lot of her stuff looks very classy (and unique) and I know some people who would pay a decent amount for it (especially since she was on TV).

Keep in mind that her coats are custom-fitted ... You're basically getting a piece made-to-order and hand-stitched. As someone who (sadly) splurges on some boutique clothing lines, these prices are not all that outlandish, particularly for the type of person who's really seeking that level of quality over something that's factory-made. Plus, part of her business model is providing a percentage of profits to charities, including the City Mission.

That being said, she's got a lot of items at lower price points.

Quality, workmanship and time cost.

excellent news about viktor. I know a lot of people who really admired him, and cannot wait to visit the museum!

I wish Valeria Mayen made clothes and accessories for men. I would definitely invest in buying something from her if she did.

Awesome news on both fronts. Viktor a legond, and Valeria a hero.

I somewhat wish that the Shreckengost gallery was more integrated into Play House Square/District of Design (it should be a centerpiece), but its still a great space for it.

I believe she is currently exploring menswear opportunities. Fingers crossed.
