Headed for Pennsylvania, I took a wrong exit in Akron and ended up in Canton, several miles out of my way. The event made me aware that I should take a break and exercise my legs, brain and camera. Dreary afternoon and all, here are the photos.

Canton looks better than I expected; in fact, not so bad at all. My last previous visit was more than twenty years ago, and left me with a not-so-great impression, and I was pleased to see that the downtown is looking a little better. There are a lot of big holes in the downtown fabric, but that's fairly common in old midwestern industrial cities. The streets and sidewalks are clean, there's a decent amount of greenery, the remaining buildings seem mostly to be maintained, and it looks like there's some resurgence of business.

This place has character; the outside is newly-done contemporary design, but the inside

is permeated with the musty smell of myriad old books on closely-packed shelves. Caged parakeets keep up a noisy chatter.

Awesome! I love Canton, a trip there is never a mistake.

I recognize at least one rehab since I've been up there, downtown is really being cleaned up!

Nice shots of Canton.  Although I was born there, I haven't been there since the 80's.  Went to St. Peter's school (as did all my siblings and two grandparents) and spent lots of time at Heggy's--yummm. My family still sends Heggy's caramel candies at Christmas.  Never had better anywhere.  Thanks for the walk down memory lane!  You have quite the eye for detail.

Thanks for the pics, I've been wanting to see some from Canton for a while now.  I love the Palace Theatre.  I happen to live in Canton (Michigan that is).

nice pics.  I was at the Palace Sunday night for the Zappa does Zappa show.  Nice theater, great concert.  Also was in Canton Monday night for dinner.  Thanks for the pics.

^ not only that, but rocky horror and the bukowski factotum movies playing? hmm, canton has a more interesting side.

very nice pics, i like canton -- it has always struck me as a very orderly and clean town.

The Lansing of Ohio.

Rob,

I really enjoyed your pictures!

I've been to Canton once myself (twice if you count passing through on US 30), and I remember the downtown was not rundown, but west of town toward Massillon on OH 172 near the place I picked up my Stark County highway map in 1998 it was rather ... shall we say ... nostalgic.  (Then again, I love nostalgic scenery!)

Very nice pics!

Looks like a neat town.  I like this building especially:

That is a pretty cool City Offices Building, but what is Canton without Pro Football Hall of Fame pics?!?!?

^You should see the main city building, that is just an annex.

Still enjoying the pics.

Nice photos of some attractive building stock.  I was just in North Canton last week... which is a suburb.  I'll have to check out Heggy's sometime.

  • 2 weeks later...

The Lansing of Ohio.

Is that a good or bad thing?

Depends if you like Lansing or not.
