But a grander development plan for the borough's downtown is quickly turning to reality, with far less fanfare. The "Downtown Brooklyn Plan" anticipates 4.5 million square feet of new office space and up to 15 new towers in what is already the city's third-largest business district. Its zoning changes, approved over the summer, also clear the way for 3,000 new housing units and 800,000 square feet of retail. "We want to have a vibrant commercial core," declares Amanda Burden, chair of the city's planning commission. ..... January 18, 200520 yr Its nice to know that the Ratners have such ambitious and forward thinking projects in the works, someplace else.
January 20, 200520 yr it was not very long ago that metrotech was the only new thing happening downtown in brooklyn. now it is booming already with development and construction jersey-city style. it's crazy. i'll get some shots up when shovels go in the ground. shame on the ratners! ps--curbed is a nice nyc area architecture blog--here is rendering of what brooklyn wants to do to its downtown waterfront: http://www.curbed.com/archives/2004/12/24/spectacular_bqe_park_coming_some_day_some_day.php
February 23, 200619 yr well here we are folks. time for action. the ratners are ready to act on atlantic yards, maybe starting as soon as monday! yet not even a peep about scranton peninsula or anything else downtown in their own backyard after all this time.... First building block to Yards set for raze The first building at the controversial Atlantic Yards site will likely be knocked down next week after a Manhattan Appellate Division judge refused yesterday to grant a temporary restraining order to save it. Project opponents tried to stop the demolition of five contested buildings at the proposed arena site by moving yesterday to appeal a lower court's ruling allowing developer Bruce Ratner to tear them down. The issue will be back in court March 1 - but in the meantime, there is now nothing to stop the planned demolitions. A Ratner spokesman said they hope to begin tearing down the first building, the so-called Underberg Building at Atlantic and Flatbush Aves., as soon as Monday.
