Posted October 29, 200618 yr GANGS IN THE ’BURBS Subversive element creeping beyond Columbus’ borders Sunday, October 29, 2006 Mark Ferenchik and Alayna DeMartini THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH Just a block from their suburban high school, two teenagers were walking to school when a white Chevrolet Cavalier drove up one winter morning. Two teenagers inside rolled down their windows and yelled at the boys, calling one of them a "chink." Then they got out of the car, one gripping a baseball bat. Just minutes before classes would begin at Whitehall-Yearling High School that day in January 2005, Vang Lesh, 17, was hit in the head with the bat and kicked repeatedly. The attackers swiped his backpack and books, and then rode off. They later told police they had assaulted Lesh to earn their way into MS-13, a Latino gang. Since then, police in some Columbus suburbs have seen more signs that gangs have drifted within their borders. They’re discovering gang symbols scrawled on walls, gang drug dealing, gang fights, gang robberies. [email protected] [email protected] http://www.dispatch.com/news-story.php?story=dispatch/2006/10/29/20061029-A1-00.html I love the instillment of fear in allowing low-income housing in the suburbs, only focusing on an increase in a type of crime while ignoring that it's been going down in general, and if anything positive this article demonstrates the need to legalize drugs by taking keeping lot's of money out of gangs hands.
October 29, 200618 yr Easthaven haha. I went to Independance HS for a year. I already knew what this thread was going to be about.
October 31, 200618 yr ANY gang problem is a problem...but the atricle estimates 600 members city wide, (which is basically the whole county) Columbus should feel fortunate they don't have the problem with gangs that Cleveland has..4000 members in roughly 90 different gangs(Cleveland.com Oct 8th). I hope Cbus does a good job of getting that under control before it gets out of hand like it has up here!

LOL What is that 43 members per gang?
October 31, 200618 yr Hey...just stating what I read..just like the article saying Cbus only had 600. That number was from what the PD got from the Cleveland Police gang task force. It most likely was for the Cleveland area, and not just the city...but who knows? I would venture to say that the problem here in Cleveland is most likely worse due to the social factors.
October 31, 200618 yr Well, two: MOVE INTO THE CITY! "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
October 31, 200618 yr Right! And when they decide to head back into the city, they'll discover that we've changed the locks.
October 31, 200618 yr I was reading ajc.com (Atlanta Journal Constitution online) the other day and there was an editorial and blog discussion about gangs in Gwinnet County (Asian and Hispanic gangs). Many people are now moving out of this very affluent county in Georgia because of the gang infestation and the filthy lifestyles of some Hispanics and Asians in this area (bunkbeds in garages, a huge number of people living in houses in affluent neighborhoods, trashing of communities, graffitti, etc). One of the quotes from the editorial was that now in Georgia, there are a lot of White people viewing having a Black neighbor as having a prince for a neighbor. Many Whites that would have placed their homes on the market at the first sight of Blacks moving into their neighborhoods, are now staying put with the influx of Asians and Hispanics to the Georgia area. As a Black person, I can't say that I am flattered. I would be lying if I said that I am not chuckling a bit . Hi neighbor !

Two things, I assume, Norcross is getting hit the hardest and I would hardly call Gwinnet "affluent", better off then Dekalb or Fulton, but hardly affluent. Lawerencville, Lilburn, duluth, etc. and all those areas seem very "hick" to me.
October 31, 200618 yr Yeah, from what i recall (and this was 10 years ago or more) Gwinnett was pretty much tracthouses in pineywoods. Not really that super-affluent, which seemed to be more directly north of Atlanta proper. From what I recall DeKalb was sort of older suburbia (but some old money areas like Druid Hills). I recall suburban gangbanging more from my Califas days...Cali is the world of the suburban gang. In Sacto there was those asian gangs, Vietnamese or Cambodian. They just didn't give a damn..they actually had a shootout between two of the asian gangs in shopping mall! ..Florin Mall on the south side of Sacramento. I don't think things are that dire here yet, I hope.

Point remains, at least Blacks are being cut some slack .
November 1, 200618 yr When I went to atl there was a lot of Asians and Hispanics around Alpharetta but they didn't look like they were in gangs or anything. The Mexicans did make up the majority of workers at the Mcdonalds and other low end service jobs. I think theres a lot of low paying factory jobs around there as well. Theres a weird mix of poor and affluent in GA; that's just how development happens down there. Trailer parks next to high-end outdoor malls.

Look at Ft. Liquordale or Miami, trailer parks in the parking lots of condo towers. Atlanta on the west side of piedmont park, midclass homes next to plywood shaks; Houston, McMansion and wood shacks that look like former slave homes. New Orleans prekatrina, was the worst by far..
