A thread that will make sense only to Dayton people, but the theme is Ohio-wide..the standardization and homogenization of shopping in one buisiness, the book trade.

The Books & Company at the Greene t may have the Books & Company name on it, but its like Hardees being called Hardees not Carls Junior, because the Books & Company at the Greene is really just a Books-a-Million.  It has a similar marketing concept as the old Books-a-Million in Washington Twp (now closed) and an even worse magazine section.

For such a big store at such an nice shopping center like the Greene it is really disappointing.  And worrisome if they decide to ever close the "real" Books & Company in Town and Country, which is still somewhat "local" in flavor even though also being owned by Books-a-Million (one difference is the "Gay and Lesbian" section, which is rather large at the Town & Country store, compared to the Books & Company at the Greene, which as a small three or four shelf euphemistically entitled  "Lifestyles" section, another is a fairly respectable fine and commerical art section).

It is really getting the point that if I want to go recretional shopping at a booksore or magazine stand it means travelling to Cicinnati (three cheers for Fountain Square News and Duttenhoffers, among others).  The book trade there is still somewhat independent and idiosyncratic and you never know what you'll find.  Columbus does have a good place in the Wexner Center Bookshop, but its a bit far to drive (though I always stop there when Im in Columbus).

Sad to think the better bookstores in Dayton, compared to the Books & Co @ the Greene now are obvious chains like Borders and Barnes & Noble.

Excuse my ignorance on the subject, but what kind of books would one find in a homosexual section?

Interesting concern, I guess I've fallen into the B&N trap.

^

Hmm...well, fiction and nonfiction, usually.  Given the topic there is a lot of politics, history and sociology, and memoir, as well as how-to/self-help things, travel guides, etc.

Yeah, given the larger scheme of things this is sort of a superficial rant, as its really about recreational shopping.  For serious reading I usually use Ohiolink library access, and those  Ohiolink books are the cost of a community borrowers card.

Now if they ever decide to pull the plug on Ohiolink I would really scream.

how-to?

Yeah, Ohiolink is great and luckily its free for me, being a student!

DAYTON — Meijer is closing its store on Harshman Road along with two others in the Columbus area, while opening three others — including one in Huber Heights.

This spring, Meijer will open a store at 7150 Executive Blvd. in Huber Heights. Two other stores in the Columbus area — at 8300 Meijer Drive in Canal Winchester and at 2811 London-Groveport in Grove City — also are to open this year.

...

^---If anyone has read the reader's comments on this story, it's horrible what is being said by many of the reader's on why the store is closing. This town has become so racially segregated, it sickens me! The same thing was said of the Gettysburg Kroger. The store was seriously losing profit and it ended up in a heated race battle. What is wrong with this town??

It seems whenever anything closes around here anymore, it always comes down to race when it has nothing to do with the closing of the store. The truth is that they (Meijer's) are opening a new store 2 miles up the road and the area cannot support two Meijer's in close proximity of each other, especially when you have a Walmart Supercenter in between them.

Can people just shut up with the race issue for once and open their eyes? Companies are here to make a profit, end of story. They are not here to offer free handouts, lose money or lose goods. If they do, then thee store gets closed, rebuilt or moved. Wake up Dayton.

Not just in Dayton...

Meijer to close 2 area stores, open 2 more

Business First of Columbus - January 11, 2008

Meijer Inc. is closing two of its Columbus stores as it opens two more in Central Ohio, the retailer said Friday.

Meijer stores on Georgesville Road on Columbus' west side and Chantry Road on the east side are scheduled to close. Openings are planned for two new stores in Grove City and Canal Winchester.

Kroger, Meijer exits called unusual

By Joanne Huist Smith

Staff Writer

Saturday, January 12, 2008

The city of Dayton's efforts to keep existing businesses and help them expand focuses largely on high and living wage jobs in growth industries such as health care and technology.

The Kroger on Gettysburg Avenue that closed on Jan. 5 didn't fit that mold. Neither did the Meijer at 2744 Harshman Road. Meijer, on Wednesday, sent the city a fax that it planned to close the store.

City Manager Rashad Young said the notice was the first indication he received of the store's slumping sales.

...

http://www.daytondailynews.com/n/content/oh/story/news/local/2008/01/11/ddn011208meijer.html

Thoughts anyone?

Maybe taxes are too high. Face it companies cut costs to survive. If they didn't all the stores would go down.

Can't speak for the Dayton moves.  However, Meijer's two Columbus moves follow the pattern of moving from older/slower growth areas to newer/higher growth areas.  Kroger has agressively done this in Columbus in the past.  Meijer hasn't done this - until now.

Taxes are probably not the primary motive.  Newer/higher growth areas usually have higher traffic counts, better income demographics and also allow a company to unveil a "new and improved" store.  It's not an urban-friendly way of doing business, but it is standard-operating-procedure for many corporations.

Amen for OhioLINK

Staying off topic, but OhioLink really does set Ohio higher education apart from most states in the union. We really don't realize how spoiled we are. Of all the investments that the new regime in Columbus could make to maintain and grow the quality of higher education in this state, OhioLink and its connected resources are at the top. Keep it well-funded and then the great students of Ohio can achieve great things.

Agreed on the piss-poor quality of bookstores and newsstands these days. Unfortunately, I contribute to that by buying most of by books on Amazon (the new ones at least and a few used) and reading periodicals on-line. Arrgh.

That is the rumor that was conveyed to my wife from a friend's daughter who works in retail in Centerville. Supposedly a new Costco is planned or is being constructed in/around Dayton.

Can anyone validate or debunk this? I can't find anything online.

If so, that begs the question, where? I'm thinking the logical site would be the Austin Landing area.

Dayton doesn't already have a Costco...?

No, it doesn't. The closest Costco to Dayton is the Waterstone Costco in Mason.

It makes you wonder why Dayton is not getting more of these national chains. More jobs for sure.

  • 3 weeks later...

It's possible that this person heard about a major retail development around Dayton and Costco was mentioned (as a groundless rumor) as a possibility. Maybe this was the root of the story:

http://www.daytondailynews.com/news/dayton-news/-9-million-menards-store-in-works-for-dayton-area-1215667.html?cxtype=rss_news

Miami Twp. Trustees are planning to discuss a development agreement with Menards, a Wisconsin-based retailer, in which the retailer would buy most of the Lyons Crossing shopping center, south of the Dayton Mall, during a work session this morning.

...

The Lyons Crossing shopping center would be razed to make room for a $9 million retail development — of which $1.5 million will be financed with property tax revenues — according to a summary of a proposed redevelopment plan unveiled in Miami Twp, officials said earlier this month.

Handmade pipes company adds to Wayne Avenue retail revival

Beards and pipes go together like peanut butter and jelly, or at least that's what a group of pipe-carving hobbyists in Dayton discovered, and have used to launch a business.

Beard enthusiasts Justin Kellermeier and Nick Caudill started carving tobacco pipes two years ago when they couldn't afford expensive cigars any more. They sold their first pipe to Ryan Lane, the owner of Atlanta-based Dream Beard Oils, an international beard competitor. He traveled internationally with the pipe, and received requests for more.

Also, I saw a blacked-out Kroger sign underneath the painted out Kmart sign.  Was Kroger where Hobby Lobby is now?

The death of retail continues:

REPORT: Elder-Beerman going out of business; all stores to close in 10 to 12 weeks

— As Bon-Ton Stores Inc. heads for liquidation, local officials are bracing for employment loss and empty tenant spaces at Elder-Beerman locations at area malls and shopping centers.

Only two bids from liquidators were submitted at the bankruptcy auction Tuesday for Bon-Ton Stores Inc., the parent company of Elder-Beerman, according to Reuters. Elder-Beerman employs hundreds in the Dayton region, with stores at multiple shopping centers and a distribution center in Fairborn.

Seeking Alpha, an investment analyst website, reported Bon-Ton CEO William Tracy sent a letter to employees late Tuesday that said the company will begin an orderly wind-down of operations following the liquidation process.
