Sean has now turned down two of the most storied programs in NCAA Division I basketball - first IU, now AZ - to stay at Xavier.

Sean Miller is the greatest basketball coach Xavier, or this city has ever seen.

Next year, a Final Four is a distinct possibility probability.

I'm glad to hear that a small school coach has spurned a big time program's offer. My alma mater (law) just lost its coach to Kentucky and I now hate Kentucky even more than I did before.  Thanks coach Miller!

How many starters are returning for Xavier next year?

Now WLW is reporting that Sean Miller is indeed going to Arizona.  What the hey?  I thought he promised that he would stay here!  He should know that there exists an opposite to the word "yes".  Just think of the massive adjustments he and his family would have to make!  That alone would make it a no-brainer that he would stay at XU!

If that WLW report is true I hope he fails out there.  TRAITOR!  LIAR!  Talk about the ultimate justice!

Don't let the door hit you JA.

i have nothing more

Very upsetting news indeed.  I don't understand how someone can give a definite "NO" and then change his mind overnight.  I also do not like the comments that he could never win a championship game at X.  That is a smack to the players.  I also heard that the players found out through the news again.  They should have been told sooner than that.  And please don't say it's not about money.  How could it not be about money when this position pays over twice his salary with a $1 million sign-on bonus.

*sigh*

Didn't he have a 12 year contract? Don't you have to get permission to talk to another team?

Didn't he have a 12 year contract? Don't you have to get permission to talk to another team?

Last year he had his contract extended through 2018.  My understanding is that he had notified XU's athletic director before going to Arizona.  Contracts must be meaningless.

There's probably some nature of buyout clause in the contract, I'd assume...so it's not really breaking the contract - would just be using one of the clauses in it...

XU is getting somewhere around $2,000,000 from AZ b/c of Sean's buyout.

The contract is generally meaningless aside from laying out base compensation since employment can be terminated at any time either by XU or Sean.

It's common courtesy for athletic directors to ask their counterparts for permission to speak to their coach, but there's nothing written in stone about it.

Mack, Mack, Mack, Mack, Mack....

I think that I would be less PO'd if he had just taken the initial offer on Sunday.  But turning the position down, only to take it the next day is pretty weak.  I know that it's more money, but come on.  If you're already a millionaire and you didn't want the job on Sunday, why take it Monday morning?

I'm sure there is something like that.  However, it is hard to get excited over a contract extention knowing there are clauses like this.

I definitely agree that this is one area where he goofed.  I wish he would not have made that announcement on Sunday.

No doubt.  I don't really understand these decisions sometimes - I mean, when you've got this kind of money, and you can practically own a town, why start over somewhere like this, even for a few more millions?  But I guess it's not a position I'll ever be in!

Thanks Sean.. You just freed up some recruits from X.

I think Xavier will always be a stepping stone for coaches before moving on to bigger and better programs.  Skip did it, then Thad, now Sean, and the next guy probably will too if he is able to have a few successful teams. I don't think there's a whole lot XU can do about it.

Xavier needs to get out of the A-10 if it wants to no longer be a stepping stone program.  As for this case in particular it reminds me of how Thad went about it.  Just a couple days before he officially left he said that he would officially be staying...then oops there he goes.

Xavier needs to get out of the A-10 if it wants to no longer be a stepping stone program.

Getting out of the A10 would help, but XU will always be a stepping stone. All but 5 or 6 programs around the country will always be a stepping stone. Heck, Izzo was considered a candidate for Kentucky by some sources before Calipari took the job. I don't see XU ever rising to MSU status.

I love how people say X should get out of the A10, as if we haven't tried.  The Big East didn't want two programs in Cincinnati and no other BCS conference takes basketball-only members.

Congrats to coach Mack. St X and XU grad. He knows what Xavier stands for and I hope he chooses to stay for the long run.

Xavier made the NCAA tournament as a #6 seed.  They will play the #11 seed Minnesota on Friday at Milwaukee.

The Musketeers take care of Minnesota and advance to the second round.  Xavier will face a tough Pittsburgh team on Sunday.

Revenge time against Pittsburgh!

Since the thread creator neglected to mention the sex of the players, I think that the XU women's team deserves a shout-out, too.  They finished ahead of OSU this year in the rankings ... XU at #5, OSU at #8.  The two couldn't meet until the championship, but it would be great to see ... most particularly because it would mean that OSU knocked off UConn in the process, which (much as I love my Buckeyes) seems despairingly unlikely.  I thought UConn had peaked in the Bird-Taurasi-Williams era, but they're at 33-0 again and have been absolutely savaging teams in the Top 10.

There was no work accomplished at work today.

The men and women won today.  The women won their first round game against East Tennessee State (94-82), and they will play Vanderbilt on Tuesday.  The men beat Pittsburgh (71-68) and advance to the Sweet 16.  They will play Kansas State on Thursday.

Xavier playing above 'mid-major' status: Three Sweet-16 berths in a row.

MILWAUKEE -- As Jordan Crawford popped the front of his jersey and Dante Jackson waved the Xavier flag in front of hundreds of navy-clad fans, Xavier's band struck up an old but familiar tune: Aretha Franklin's "Respect."

Whether the choice was conscious or not, it was fitting. Unequivocally -- not as a "mid-major" or "non-BCS", but unequivocally -- Xavier deserves your respect.

With its 71-68 win over No. 3-seed Pittsburgh Sunday night, Xavier became one of two programs in the entire country to advance to the Sweet 16 the past three years. The other is Michigan State. Guess which one gets more ink?

69 Xavier

72 Kansas State

ARRRRGH!!!

End of 2nd half: 72-72... Xavier has been pulling these close calls all season!!

Amazing! :-o

And now 87 tied, going into double OT... I'm watching my boss' and co-worker's Twitter and Facebook feeds, and people are everywhere tonight.

96-100, :12 in 2nd OT... GAH!

96-101 final :(

The best basketball game I have watched all year, maybe longer. I wish Xavier would have won, but great game non the less

Definitely worth staying up to watch.  Might mean I'm sleepwalking at the office today, but so worth it ... and I'm sure I won't be the only one, even up here in Akron.

Pretty decent year for Ohio schools in the NCAA, all things considered!

Crazy good game. I threw in the towel and went to bed at the end of the first OT, I was already stretched way beyond my bedtime. Too bad for Xavier I was rooting for them. That three to send it into double OT was a monster!

We left on a high note. Many projected Stanford would kick our ass, and we showed them. It was a VERY close call.

Stanford's buzzer-beater dooms Xavier

By John Erardi, Cincinnati Enquirer, March 29, 2010

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – It all came down two the final four seconds.

Stanford had the ball under Xavier’s basket with the score tied and a Final Four appearance on the line, and the Muskies giving the Cardinal all they could handle.

Women's Hoops Falls to No. 2 Stanford's Buzzer Beater in Regional Final

XU Falls 55-53; Cardinal Move on to Final Four

Xavier Athletics, March 29, 2010

SACRAMENTO - Junior forward Amber Harris scored a game-high 20 points but the No. 5 Xavier University women's basketball team fell victim to a coast-to-coast buzzer-beating lay-up by Stanford's Jeanette Pohlen as the Musketeers were nipped, 55-53, by No. 2 Stanford in the Sacramento Regional Final of the 2010 NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship. With the loss, XU concludes its season with a 30-4 record while Stanford improves to 35-1 and advances to the Final Four in San Antonio.

Harris and Ta'Shia Phillips were each named to the All-Sacramento Region Team.

Things looked bleak for the Musketeers after Appel converted on a put back to give Stanford a 49-42 lead at the five-minute mark on the same possession that Ta'Shia Phillips fouled out on. However, XU would not lay down and mounted a 9-0 run over a 3:20 stretch to seize a 51-49 lead at the 1:40 mark.

Special Jennings sparked the run with an old-fashioned 3-point play at the 4:10 mark and April Phillips capped it with a strong put back down low to give XU a 51-49 edge at the 1:40 mark.

Stanford tied the score on the next possession but Tyeasha Moss scored on a driving layup with under a minute to go to reclaim the 53-41 edge. Kayla Pedersen answered with a tough runner but XU had the ball with 30-seconds remaining and the score tied at 53.

XU missed a pair of shots down low and Stanford called timeout with 4.4 seconds to go and set up Pohlen's heroics.

XU and Stanford tied 39-to-39 on the glass after the Cardinal had a 22-to-15 rebounding edge in the first half. XU shot just 38.3 percent from the floor but the team held Stanford to a paltry 35.1 percent shooting.

XU made just one of its 14 attempts from long-range and went just 6-of-11 from the charity stripe.

Harris' 20 came on 10-of-17 shooting and she also blocked a pair of shots. April Phillips added 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting and Dee Dee Jernigan scored chipped in with 10 points and two assists.

Xavier trailed by two points, 26-24, at the half but used an 8-0 run over a 50-second stretch to take a 40-39 lead on a Jernigan layup at the 12-minute mark. The 8-0 spurt was keyed by four points from Jernigan and a steal and lay-in by Harris.

Stanford reclaimed the lead, 41-40, on a Nnemkadi Ogwumike put back and then both teams went on 4:10 scoring droughts. Xavier had several good looks in its effort to build a lead but couldn't convert.

The 3:10 of the first half was a back-and-forth battle, featuring three ties and four lead changes. The Cardinal methodically built a lead though and extended their edge to six points, 24-18, after Kayla Pedersen nailed a 3-pointer at the 5:50 mark.

The Xavier defense clamped down from that point though and held Stanford to just two points for the remainder of the half. Stanford shot just 25.0 percent (7-of-28) during the first half, which was the lowest Cardinal field goal percentage in any half this season.

Dee Dee Jernigan scored four of Xavier's last six points of the first half to pull XU to within two points, 26-24, at the half.

I just saw the Stanford-Xavier end-of-game recap.  Wow!!  Amazing full court run by the Stanford player - releasing the ball with 0.1 left on the clock for the game winning layup.

Jeez, I feel so sorry for the Xavier player that missed those two open layups.  Such a heartbreaker!

Still, a great season for the Lady Musketeers.  Congrats.

Xavier is in the NCAA tournament as a #6 seed in the East Region.  On Friday, they face #11 Marquette at the Q in Cleveland.

Didn't go well for Xavier this year.  Marquette eliminated the Musketeers last night.

Cincinnati, Xavier reveal suspensions

Updated: December 11, 2011, 10:07 PM ET

By Andy Katz, ESPN.com

Cincinnati and Xavier each suspended four players Sunday for their roles in a brawl that ended the Bearcats' blowout loss to No. 8 Xavier a day earlier.

Cincinnati suspended senior Yancy Gates, junior Cheikh Mbodj and freshman Octavius Ellis six games each and freshman Ge'Lawn Guyn for one game.

Xavier suspended freshman Dez Wells and walk-on Landen Amos for four games, junior guard Mark Lyons for two and senior guard Tu Holloway for one game.

I feel bad for that big kid was got stomped. That could really cause some damage.

Why some of these criminals weren't arrested is beyond me.

This is what happens when you compromise University ideals to attempt to put together a winning sports program (in this case, basketball).  Both schools should be ashamed, but especially Xavier, because it is a Catholic University that supposedly holds itself to a higher standard.

As for the kid who got stomped, he's a dirty player in his own right who in a previous Crosstown Shootout matchup headbutted Yancy Gates (the kid who threw the sucker-punch on Saturday).

Ugh, it's been a mess of a day here at work (at Xavier). I can't really post anything about it, but it has been bad for both sides.

Yancy Gates and/or Cheikh Mbodj should have been suspended for the entire season or kicked off the team entirely.  There is no place in the game for what those two did.  Remember when LeGarrette Blount punched that Boise player?  IIRC he was suspended for 10 games... nearly the entire season.  It also cost him a lot of money by bumping him down the draft.  When you look at precedent, the punishment does not fit the crime.  The NCAA needs to step in here and do what these schools/conferences won't.

I'm also surprised Holloway got off so easy... 1 game?  I was expecting 5 or so for him, mainly for his instigation of the incident, but also for his comments after the game.

Work for the prosecutor?

No, I work for Xavier University.

A full season suspension for a fight is completely unprecedented.

As for Holloway, Xavier has Gonzaga game coming up, there's no way they'd suspend him for that.  Suspensions are done strategically, UC's just aren't as transparent since Big East play doesn't begin until after the new year.  Xavier has a #8 ranking to play for, and important games coming up.

Wasn't much of a fight.  More like one sucker punch.....Yancy is a coward and should be suspended longer than 6 games.

Yancy Gates was classless; I don't think "coward" is the right word, though.  There was, however, some cowering during the fight, if "cowered" was the word you were looking for.
