March 21, 201114 yr What was amazing about that halftime lead is that we started out the game down 11-2..... which means we closed out the half on a 50-15 run!
March 21, 201114 yr Sadly, they don't let you carry points over from your margin of victory into your next match. The easy part is over (not that #8 seeds should be presumed to be easy games--cough, Pitt, cough). Kentucky has me worried. Assuming the favorites keep winning, our path to the title here goes Kentucky, North Carolina, Duke, Kansas.
March 26, 201114 yr Yeah, but it was a PHENOMENAL season! Congrats to our Buckeyes! "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
March 26, 201114 yr F**k - life will suck for awhile on the Mason-Dixon line this week. Go Tarheels? I must admit that I thought the Bucks would roll tonight until the 12 minute mark of the first half. It's easy to say, but you have to kill a team early. Once the slimeballs knew they could hang I was nervous.
March 26, 201114 yr following the game last night buford and sully vowed to return next year. Add in another stellar recruiting class and tOSU should be pre season top 5 again. watch out for this kid next year. balla. http://www.maxpreps.com/news/d70nlaoeEd-YiQAcxJSkrA/matta,-buckeyes-strike-again-with-laquinton-ross.htm
March 28, 201114 yr Yea winning 33 games is overrated. Guess you didn't see what Kentucky did to NC yesterday. Moron.
March 28, 201114 yr They were largely a jump shooting team and thus very vulnerable to the one and done format of march madness. It was impressive that they nearly won despite shooting so poorly.
March 28, 201114 yr They were largely a jump shooting team and thus very vulnerable to the one and done format of march madness. It was impressive that they nearly won despite shooting so poorly. I agree, this is my problem with the NCAA Tournament. It's fun to see some new faces in the Final Four, but these aren't the four best teams in the country. Does the NCAA want to crown a true champion? Apparently not. Oh well, the Buckeyes will be loaded again next year, big difference being that they're going to seriously lack experience. Hopefully Sully, Buford, and Craft can step in and take on leadership roles.

March 29, 201114 yr Explaining Sullinger’s Decision to Stay By PETE THAMEL The New York Times Satch Sullinger, the father of the Ohio State star Jared Sullinger, is a human fortune cookie. A retired high school and college coach in Ohio, the elder Sullinger speaks in coaching nuggets. One of his favorite sayings sums up his son’s decision to return to Ohio State for his sophomore year, despite being projected as a top-five pick in the N.B.A. draft. “Yesterday is history,” Satch likes to say. “Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift. That’s why they call it the present.” While the focus of the college basketball world shifts to Houston this week for the Final Four, Sullinger’s return next season makes Ohio State an early favorite to advance to New Orleans for the 2012 Final Four. The Buckeyes should be No. 1 in the preseason polls, as the coaching staff also expects the junior wing William Buford to return. That's fine, but football is a sport in which one game can more accurately determine the better team. Basketball is not such a sport. Take nothing away from the Cinderellas, but we talking about teams that got hot or lucky at the right time and benefited from matchups they were given. It would never happen, but if we're going to allow in 64+ teams, there should be serious changes in how they're selected and the format should be changed. I won't argue against a playoff for football necessarily, but at the very least we can be fairly certain that the teams on the field in the BCS championship game are two of the best in the country, as proven by a whole season of play. For the second time in as many years, the NCAA basketball championship game will not be able to say the same.
March 30, 201114 yr That's fine, but football is a sport in which one game can more accurately determine the better team. What makes you say that? In football there are limited possessions. A couple dropped passes and a few untimely turnovers can completely change the face of a game. In basketball, you have many more offensive opportunities, so you have to be more consistently bad to blow a game.
March 30, 201114 yr It is more that you can't play "best of" series in football. That would take 1-2 months to complete! March Madness isn't going to change.... it is what defines NCAA bball. The BCS is much, much more controversial because there is such a subjective element to it.

The BCS is much, much more controversial because there is such a subjective element to it. There's a big subjective element to the NCAA Tournament as well. Think about team selection, seeding, etc.

In basketball, you have many more offensive opportunities, so you have to be more consistently bad to blow a game. You don't think my statement is true? Let me try another angle: In college football, do you think teams rated as low as Butler and Virginia Commonwealth could ever knock out the top 3-4 rated teams in the country, plus beat a few other highly-rated teams? Upsets happens in football, but they are much more rare. See what I'm saying?

For example, non of the teams in this years final four would have even made it to a bcs bowl, let alone the championship.

For example, non of the teams in this years final four would have even made it to a bcs bowl, let alone the championship. I don't think that matters. All four teams in the Final Four had fairly mediocre regular seasons and have gotten hot over their past ~10 games or so. One of them will win the championship based on that. Have any of those teams been the best team in the country over the course of a full season's body of work? I don't think so. That's my issue with the NCAA Tournament in a nutshell, it's too easy for simply above average teams to ride a wave to the Final Four or even to a title. I would like to see a tournament format that rewards more overall success and looks to really determine the best team in the country. At the moment, I'm not at all convinced that we have that.
March 31, 201114 yr There were no truly great teams in college basketball this year. If the Buckeyes were the best team in the country, they would have found a way to win the whole thing. What we had this year was a bunch of good teams, each with some weaknesses. Additionally, all playoff scenarios are basically just who got hot at the right time. The best team in the NFL this year was probably the Patriots, and the Packers barely made the playoffs, yet because they got hot at the right time, they won the whole thing. Were the Giants the best baseball team last year, or did they just have a really great September and October? This is just the nature of a playoff system, and it's what makes the tournament fun to watch, because anything can really happen. There are years where there is a dominant team that wins the whole thing (Florida a few years back comes to mind), but there are also years where a Cinderella takes it home.
April 1, 201114 yr If the Buckeyes were the best team in the country, they would have found a way to win the whole thing. I disagree with this statement wholeheartedly. I'm not going to argue that Ohio State (or Kansas, or anyone else) was THE best team in the country. I will, however, argue, that each of those teams are better than where they ended up being eliminated in the Dance. The tournament is not about giving the best teams the chance to advance far. The best team possibly, and likely, will not be playing this weekend. Additionally, all playoff scenarios are basically just who got hot at the right time. I don't care much about the tournament being "fun to watch." Sure that's what makes it money, but I would like a tournament that supposedly crowns the best team in the country to be more accurate in doing so. I won't argue with you about the MLB playoffs, in fact, professional baseball has far and away the absolute worst system of determining a true champion of all the most popular American sports. It's not even close. As for the NFL, again, given the nature of the sport, it's not nearly as bad as you make it out to be. Clearly, though, the NBA and NHL have the truest systems.

While the series playoff format likely does reward the best team with the championship, I do think that both NBA and NHL have gone too far and diluted the fields. If more than half the teams from the league are able to make the playoffs then the regular season (which could be debated as truly establishing the best team) becomes a prolonged warm up. The NFL and MLB at least limit the fields so that only those that are able to compete throughout the entire season enter the playoffs. To bring this back to Buckeyes Basketball... Is Sullinger staying or going? I dont think I've heard anything either way at this point.

Is Sullinger staying or going? I dont think I've heard anything either way at this point. The MLB lets in too many teams for the length of the regular season. There's no point in playing 162 games if you're just going to regularly allow teams with win-loss disparities of 10+ games off of the best team in the league into the postseason tournament. Except for the one-game playoff that was used to determine the pennant winner, the system used pre-1994 was much truer. Oh, and yes, Sullinger will be returning . Or, at the very least, he's said as much multiple times in separate outlets. We've heard that before from folks that have later reneged, but I feel confident that Sully will be true to his word. Buford says he's returning, too. Now where's our thread for UD basketball and its uncertain future? ;)

June 30, 201113 yr This was some unexpectedly good news for the basketball program. Jent has really proven himself as a coach in the NBA. He should be a great addition for the Buckeyes. Ohio State men's basketball update: Jent returns to take assistant job Jent drawn back to Columbus: Former Buckeye gives up Cavs job to sit next to Matta
November 14, 201113 yr The Basketball Buckeyes began their 2011-12 season on Friday with a win against Wright State. The team was ranked #3 in the pre-season poll after going 34-3 last year and returning three of five starters from that team. Ohio State hosts #10 Florida on Tuesday at The Schott. OSU will also host Duke on Nov. 29 and travel to Kansas on Dec. 10 before the start of the Big Ten schedule. And on a non-OSU note: How much fun was that special Veteran's Day "Carrier Classic" game between North Carolina and Michigan State?
November 15, 201113 yr Looking forward to tomorrow night's game with the Gators. The Bucks still have a lot of revenge to get on UF for 2007.
November 16, 201113 yr Decent win last night for the basketball Buckeyes. Recap from ESPN below: ESPN Game Recap: (3) Ohio State 81 - (8.) Florida 74
November 29, 201113 yr #2 ranked Buckeyes host the #3 ranked Duke Blue Devils tonight in the Schott. Rare meeting between OSU and Duke. Only the 6th time they've ever played - they haven't faced each other since 2002. Just the second time Duke has come to the Ohio State campus. The only other time was 1964, when the Buckeyes played in the cozy confines of St. John Arena.
November 30, 201113 yr Wasn't much of game.... COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio State's introduction video Tuesday night included a video of ESPN's Dick Vitale crowing about Duke, and then the Blue Devils' logo exploding in flames. That's about what the game was like. In front of a sellout crowd of 18,809 that included what amounted to almost an NBA All-Star team seated courtside, the No. 2-ranked Buckeyes seized the moment and blew up No. 3 Duke on the court as well, never trailing in a dominant 85-63 win as part of the Big Ten-ACC Challenge. http://www.cleveland.com/osu/index.ssf/2011/11/no_2_ohio_state_delivers_a_nea.html
November 30, 201113 yr Turned out not to be close with a 19-point halftime lead and a 22-point win. But still enjoyable if you're a Buckeye fan. Great offensive balance. Sullinger had 21 - Buford 20 - Thomas 18 - Craft 17. But the team defense was just outstanding.
December 11, 201113 yr It was billed as Road Test Saturday as both the #1 and #2 college basketball teams went on the road today. #2 Ohio State travelled to #13 Kansas. Jared Sullinger didn't play against Kansas. Sullinger got back spasms during the Duke game and was held out of last Saturday's game against Texas-Pan American. It likely made the difference as the basketball Buckeyes did not escape Phog Allen Fieldhouse undefeated. #1 Kentucky travelled to Indiana. UK lost to unranked Indiana on a game-ending three-point basket.
December 11, 201113 yr yeah the osu game was a dud, they got skulled the whole game, but that kentucky-indiana game was an exciting stunner! too bad the xavier-uc finale overshadowed everything...!
December 17, 201113 yr The basketball Buckeyes travelled to South Carolina and won today. But that's not the takeaway news from this game. Sullinger's left foot got either stepped on or kicked six minutes into the game. He left the game, hobbled to the locker room and did not return to the game. Reports are that X-rays showed Sullinger does not have a foot fracture. It's being reported as a contusion. Tough setback for Sullinger (and the Bucks). Sullinger played 25 minutes in Wednesday's game against SC-Upstate and looked to be recovered from the back spasms that kept him out of the Kansas game.
December 19, 201113 yr I like what I saw from Thomas yesterday, but this team is borderline Sweet 16-caliber without Sullinger. He needs to get healthy, even if it means sitting out a few games into the Big Ten schedule.
December 23, 201113 yr Sullinger's foot looks okay. He played 30 minutes in Tuesday's win over Lamar at the Schott. And last night he played 24 minutes in a blowout win over Miami (OH) at Nationwide. (The game at Nationwide was to qualify the arena to host the opening rounds of the NCAA Tournament later this season.) The team goes 12-1 in their pre-Big Ten schedule. The Big Ten games start next week with Wednesday home game against Northwestern and a Saturday game at Indiana.
January 17, 201213 yr Six games into the Big Ten schedule has seen the following: - 3 blowout wins against weaker B10 teams (Iowa, Nebraska, NW) - 2 close road losses against quality B10 teams (Indiana, Illinois) - 1 convincing win at home against a quality team (17-point win over Indiana)
January 30, 201213 yr The basketball Buckeyes got off to a slow start in the Big Ten. They were 3-2 in Big Ten play after losing at Illinois on January 10. But since then they've been on a roll. Four straight blowout wins including yesterday's 15-point victory over Michigan. The team's offense has been okay - but its the defense that's been outstanding. They've really been shutting teams down. OSU (19-3, 7-2) finishes their final month of the Big Ten schedule starting Saturday. And it should be the most difficult stretch for the Buckeyes. They start out at Wisconsin on Saturday and finish up with home games against Purdue and Michigan State - road games at Minnesota and Michigan - home games against Illinois and Wisconsin - and road games at Northwestern and Michigan State.
February 4, 201213 yr Big statement win for the Buckeyes today in Madison. They seem to be rolling right now.
February 8, 201213 yr Last night's win against Purdue was a struggle. But it's still a win. And it extends the nation's current second-longest home winning streak to 39. Assuming Michigan State wins tonight against Penn State (we can assume that right?) Saturday will feature #12 MSU at #3 OSU in a battle between the first and second place teams in the Big Ten.
February 12, 201213 yr Last night's game against Michigan State was a struggle - but this time it was a loss. The Buckeyes first home loss in 40 games. MSU's defense exposed OSU's big weakness - outside shooting. If OSU can't hit the outside shot, then defenses can slump inside to help against Sullinger. And that's what MSU did all night long. Sullinger still got his points (17) and rebounds (16). But they also forced him into 10 turnovers. OSU shot an abysmal 26.4% for the game - led by Buford and Thomas who combined shot 4-24 FG's & 0-7 3PT's.
February 13, 201213 yr It was really strange to see. Buford and Thomas were generally well defended (Izzo's team always play tough, after all), but not perfectly defended. They got some pretty decent looks at the basket from outside and were not even making those. They're obviously both capable of making those shots because they've been hitting them regularly for a great deal of the season, even in games we've previously lost. When we lost at Kansas, for example, we were playing without Sullinger (so in theory, Kansas could have focused *more* on defending the perimeter because they weren't facing our biggest inside threat), but the outside shots were still going in for us. Buford led the team with 21 points and Thomas had 19. I've never seen them both go this ice-cold in the same game.
February 14, 201213 yr That loss was incredibly deflating. Just when I was starting to feel good about this team they have a terrible week. I still think their ceiling, barring an absolute perfect bracket draw, is the Elite Eight. I just don't see this team having the horses to go to the Final Four, let alone all the way.
February 22, 201213 yr The Buckeyes followed a week of split results (W at Minn / L at Mich) with a blowout home win against the reeling Illinois Illini. The last three games remaining in the Big Ten schedule are a home game this Sunday against Wisconsin. Followed next week by road games at Northwestern and Michigan State.
February 22, 201213 yr When Buford does well, the Bucks do well. Unfortunately he disappears every few games--usually against the better opponents. He needs to become more consistent if they're going to win the Big Ten and make a run in the tournament.
March 6, 201213 yr After dropping their last home against Wisconsin, the Buckeyes won road nail biters at Northwestern and Michigan State. Like Clevelander17 said "When Buford does well, the Bucks do well". And Buford had a great game at Michigan State. He got a game-high 25 points and hit the last second game-winning jumper. That win vaulted Ohio State into a three way tie for the Big Ten regular season championship with Michigan State and Michigan. The Bucks finished 25–6 (13–5); 7th ranked in the AP.
March 8, 201213 yr It's good to have a share of the Big Ten regular-season championship, and the last half of the second half of the MSU game was electrifying. That said, I could even see us getting knocked out in our first game in the Big Ten tournament (over the Nebraska/Iowa winner), and we're going to have a beast of a time beating Michigan (most likely) and then the MSU-Wisconsin winner (most likely) to win the tournament title. If we don't do that, the highest I see us in the tournament is a 3-seed, which is a little disappointing considering where we finished last year.
