February 4, 20214 yr The men's team has a Top 10 Big Ten matchup tonight on ESPN. #7 Ohio State will tip off at #8 Iowa for a showdown with significant Big Ten title implications. At the beginning of January the Basketball Buckeyes were a middling 2-3 in Big Ten play with an overall 8-3 record. But since then, they've had three wins over Top 15 teams and are 8-4 in league play with a 14-4 overall record. This season's team is led by sophomore forward E.J. Liddell. Liddell has made a huge jump from his freshman season and leads the team in scoring (15.3) and rebounds (6.9) Junior guard Duane Washington Jr. is second in scoring with 14.2, although his scoring runs hot and cold frequently. Transfer junior forward Justice Sueing (awesome name btw) has been a significant addition with 10.9 PPG and 5.4 RPG. Senior point guard C.J. Walker suffered a hand injury mid-season but is back in the lineup now and adds 8.6 PPG. Senior forward Kyle Young rounds out the top five with 8.0 PPG and 5.9 RPG. The bench is led by junior forward Justin Ahrens with 6.9 PPG and an amazing 50% 3PT shooting rate. Big freshman forward Zed Key has surged lately as a key role player with 6.6 PPG and 3.6 RPG. Grad transfer forward Seth Towns has only played in 12 of the 18 games - and even then with limited minutes as he recovers from multiple season-ending surgeries while at Harvard. But you can see glimpses of greatness from Towns - and he'll still be eligible for next season. Junior guard Musa Jallow has played limited minutes as he also recovers from a season-ending surgery last year. Transfer point guard Jimmy Sotos looked like he might be a significant contributor to this year's team - but shoulder surgery ended his season after 12 games.

OSU is probably looking at a top 5 ranking nationally now and may flirt with a 1 seed in the NCAA tournament if they keep it up. Very Stable Genius

February 16, 20214 yr The Basketball Buckeyes have won six straight and nine of their last ten B1G games. With a dominating 78-59 win over Indiana on Saturday, they are now 17-4 overall, 11-4 in the Big Ten, and remain #4 in the AP. The rest of the B1G is doing well in the AP poll too. Michigan, who played and won their first game after a two-week covid pause, stayed at #3, the Buckeyes are #4, and Illinois moved up one spot to #5. Iowa (#11) and Wisconsin (#21) are still in the Top 25, while Purdue and Rutgers are just outside the Top 25. The Basketball Buckeyes will face Penn State on Thursday and then have a Top 5 nationally televised showdown with Michigan on Sunday.
February 21, 20214 yr https://www.elevenwarriors.com/ohio-state-basketball/2021/02/121295/ohio-state-michigan-the-game-wins-february-big-ten- We didn't get "The Game" on the gridiron this season - but we are getting "The Game" on the hardcourt. And this was billed as the first-ever top-five matchup between Ohio State and Michigan in their long and storied basketball histories. Although the outcome wasn't what Buckeye Nation hoped for - the action at the Schott in today's nationally televised game did match the pregame hype. Both teams were like heavyweight fighters trading blows. In the first half, Michigan was shooting lights out with 10-13 from 3pt range. But OSU kept pace and was only down 45-43 at halftime. Michigan only made one 3-pt basket in the second half, but they made up for that with a bunch of easy tips or dunks from their 7-foot-1 freshman center. Still, the Basketball Buckeyes kept pace until a couple of turnovers late in the game gave Michigan some breathing room and they were able to hold on for a 92-87 win. E. J. Liddell recorded his third double-double of the season with 23 points and 10 rebounds, and Washington put up a career-high 30 points. This loss breaks a seven-game winning streak for the Buckeyes and drops the team to 18-5 overall and 12-5 in the B1G.
March 1, 20214 yr After the close loss to #3 Michigan, the Basketball Buckeyes dropped a close game at Michigan State on Thursday and a not-so-close loss to #9 Iowa today. It's their third straight loss - after winning seven straight - and they're likely to drop out of the AP Top 10. Only one regular season game remains - a Saturday match hosting #5 Illinois.

March 14, 20214 yr The Basketball Buckeyes have won three games over the last three days in the Big Ten Tournament. Although its great that the team has bounced back from the four-loss end to the regular season - all three B1G tournament wins have been close victories that featured poor end-of-game finishes from the team: In the opening round win over unranked Minnesota, OSU lost a 12-point lead in the final minute and Minny got within one point until OSU won by 4. The quarterfinal game against #20 Purdue took OT to win, after OSU had the final shot in regulation but turned the ball over instead. And in yesterday semifinal win against #4 Michigan, OSU had a 9-point in the final two minutes that UM got down to one point with a final possession and a buzzer shot that could have won the game. I know tournament time is "survive-and-advance", but the Basketball Buckeyes don't look much better than their end of regular season slide, despite this B1G tournament run. Still, they'll face #3 Illinois for the tournament championship today before the brackets are announced.

The Buckeyes overcame a 17-point deficit to push the championship final into overtime - mostly on the strength of Duane Washington's career-high 32 points.

They have an opening match with #15 Oral Roberts on Friday:
March 15, 20214 yr Up-and-down league season and tournament but this team can hang with anyone. Even our losses, except for the meltdown with Iowa, were really close. (Of course, so were a lot of our wins.) But we've grown a lot this year and we at least can have the firepower, when it shows up, even to hang with Baylor if we make it that far. To be honest, it wouldn't shock me at all if Purdue knocked off Baylor. The Big Ten was just a brutal league this year.
March 19, 20214 yr I've only watched the second half and the last four minutes of the first half. But it we lose to a #15 seed, free throws are going to have been our downfall. Tied 64-64 with 15 seconds left as I type this. ETA: And now OT. I've watched us miss the front end of 1-and-1s, and at least once watched us miss both shots when we got 2 from a shooting foul.

March 22, 20214 yr For anybody curious, here's some research from Texas Tech in 2014 about the increasing trend of hateful messages towards college athletes. I think the findings are obviously very relevant today to the EJ Liddell situation. It mentions the need for athletic department personnel to provide resources to the athletes, so it's good to see that OSU had such a strong response: “I hate you man!”: Exploring maladaptive parasocial interaction expressions to college athletes via Twitter. Abstract There has been an increasing trend of fans attacking college athletes via Twitter after athletic contests. These messages often contain hostile and vitriolic language that in many cases, make national sport news headlines. The present study explored this behavior through the lens of maladaptive parasocial interaction (Kassing & Sanderson, in press) by investigating tweets directed at University of Alabama placekicker Cade Foster after Alabama lost their rivalry game against Auburn University on November 30, 2013. Using Radian6 software, a total of 938 tweets were analyzed. Analysis revealed that maladaptive parasocial interaction manifested in the following ways: (a) belittling; (b) mocking; (c) sarcasm; and (d) threats. Interestingly, and unexpectedly, a host of supportive comments were conveyed to Foster as well. The results suggest that athletic department personnel must provide resources and education for college athletes on coping with these messages to mitigate potentially negat... https://scholars.ttu.edu/en/publications/i-hate-you-man-exploring-maladaptive-parasocial-interaction-expre-5 Edited March 22, 20214 yr by TH3BUDDHA

This is not the forum for political point-scoring. We talk about different scores and different points here. It is possible to talk about the inappropriate messages sent by DM to Liddell (or any other verbal abuse directed at amateur or professional athletes) without partisan editorializing. September 1, 20213 yr Greg Oden is coming back to the Basketball Buckeyes. The former Buckeye center and eventual No. 1 NBA draft pick will join Chris Holtmann’s staff this season as a graduate student with an eye on becoming a full-time coach. Towns was named Ivy League Player of the Year in his 2017-18 season at Harvard, but then missed the next two seasons entirely due to ongoing knee injuries. After graduating Harvard, Towns - a Columbus native and Northland High School alum - missed the first six games of his past OSU season for the Buckeyes while continuing to rehab injuries before averaging 3.8 points per game on 10.8 minutes per night. You could see some flashes of greatness, but he still wasn't 100 percent health-wise. Now the Buckeye basketball program announced that Towns will undergo back surgery and is expected to miss the next three to four months of the upcoming season. He is said to be hopeful to return for his final year of eligibility. But with this latest injury, I wonder if Towns should just call it a career at this point.

December 1, 20213 yr The Basketball Buckeyes upset #1 Duke at Value City Arena last night. I hate to say it, but I bailed out of this game at halftime because of the late 9:30PM start and OSU being down 13 at halftime. But the team stuck with it in the second half and pulled off the amazing upset(!) Zed Key led the way with 20 points. Liddell had 14 points and 14 rebounds. Coach Holtmann thinks the team is very close to returning to the court. If so, a conference road game at Nebraska on Sunday would end the team's three-week COVID-induced layoff as the Basketball Buckeyes haven't played since their Dec. 11 win over Wisconsin.
January 3, 20223 yr The Basketball Buckeyes returned to the court after a three-week covid-induced layoff with a road game at Nebraska. https://www.elevenwarriors.com/ohio-state-basketball/2022/01/128407/ohio-state-slips-past-nebraska-in-overtime-behind-clutch-efforts-from-malaki-branham-and-jamari-wheeler They needed to score the final five points in regulation to force OT, where they eventually won. True freshman guard Malaki Branham had a breakout game with 35 points on 13-of-19 shooting and 6-of-10 from 3PT range. Iowa experienced a mechanical issue with its team plane Wednesday night, delaying its flight until Thursday morning. But the icy/snowy weather in Columbus today forced the Hawkeyes to call off their trip. Ohio State now has two postponed Big Ten games to reschedule - the Buckeyes 1/22 game against Nebraska was also postponed due to a COVID outbreak at Nebraska. Ohio State previously had non-conference games against Kentucky, New Orleans and UT Martin canceled in December following a COVID outbreak within the Buckeye program. The Basketball Buckeyes next scheduled game is a 1 p.m. tip-off Sunday at home against Maryland.
March 21, 20223 yr Ohio State Comes Close Late Against Villanova, But Close Doesn't Cut It As Buckeyes Fail to Advance Past Second Round of NCAA Tournament https://www.elevenwarriors.com/ohio-state-basketball/2022/03/129950/ohio-state-comes-close-late-against-villanova-but-close-doesn-t-cut-it-as-buckeyes-fail-to-advance-past-second Malaki Branham probed the lane, drew a triple-team and tossed the ball back to a wide-open shooter over his right shoulder. Jamari Wheeler knocked down a three with 5:39 to play against No. 2 seed Villanova, cutting the Wildcat lead to just two points after the Buckeyes had trailed by 15 less than 11 minutes prior. Momentum swung palpably in Ohio State’s direction, and the scarlet and gray comeback appeared all too fitting in a tournament that’s never short on madness. But after that Wheeler 3-pointer, Ohio State hit just one more shot from the floor, scored three points total and missed six of its final seven attempts from the field. The wheels fell off at exactly the wrong time, and even if Ohio State connected on a few haymakers down the stretch, it couldn’t land the knockout blow to punch a ticket past the second round of the Big Dance – for the third time in Chris Holtmann’s five years with the program. ================================= So my dad's alma mater beat mine in the second round of the NCAA tournament this year, closing out a solid but not necessarily remarkable season for the Buckeyes. I'm not sure if the ominous tone of the Eleven Warriors article means that Holtmann is on weaker footing with the athletics department than I thought; they act like this was another collapse against Oral Roberts as opposed to coming close but not quite pulling it out as a 7-seed (us) against a 2-seed (Nova). This was the "expected" result. If we'd won here, we'd actually be facing Michigan in the Sweet Sixteen. As it is, Villanova will face Michigan in the Sweet Sixteen, a rematch of the 2018 national championship game that Villanova won 79-62. The Big Ten has underwhelmed in the tournament so far. Purdue and Michigan are the only teams still alive, and we've been on the wrong end of multiple upsets: Houston over Illinois (a 5-4 upset, but still an upset), 11-Iowa State over 3-Wisconsin, 12-Richmond over 5-Iowa. None of our schools have pulled off a big upset: 12-Indiana got erased by 5-Saint Mary's, 7-Michigan State had a 5-point lead late against Duke but collapsed, 7-Ohio State closed to within 2 of 2-Villanova but ran out of gas.
March 21, 20223 yr My perception of Ohio State this year was that they were very young and inexperienced. Preseason predictions had them in the middle of the Big Ten, but early-season success got my hopes up for more. Down the stretch injuries really hurt them. And if you look at the box score from the Villanova game this team looked really thin after Liddell and Branham. The lack of a third scorer and production from the bench look like the difference. After the end-of-the-season losses and performance in the Big tournament, I was very pleased with their performance in the first round and not surprised at all about how the second round played out. I have Villanova in the Final Four, and losing to a FF team isn't terrible. I really like Holtmann, and I'm hopeful that some of the young guys really step up (and that Branham sticks around) and Ohio State can finish in the upper quarter of the Big Ten next year and make it to the Sweet 16.

(AP) Jon Scheyer knew it would take time for a Duke team with 11 new players to learn each other and how to close out games. Moments like Wednesday night - with the 17th-ranked Blue Devils tenaciously protecting a second-half lead against a ranked opponent- are vital for that process. Freshman Kyle Filipowski had 16 points, including a key three-point play with 2:37 left, to help Duke beat No. 25 Ohio State 81-72 on Wednesday night in the final ACC/Big Ten Challenge, a solid bounceback performance after a loss to No. 5 Purdue. ============================= And a belated codicil to last season: Malaki Branham did declare for the NBA draft early, taken in the later part of the first round (No. 20 by San Antonio). Buckeyes currently sit at 5-2. On the upside, their only losses are to ranked teams (Duke and SDSU). On the downside, they haven't beaten any ranked teams, either. The Big Ten currently has six ranked teams, though OSU is probably about to drop out. Only Purdue and Indiana are in the top 10 (at #5 and #10). Could easily be another year when the Big Ten gets a lot of teams into the NCAA tournament but not deep into it.

It’s a moment that a very good program wanting to be great must capitalize upon. In 2014, the OSU football team did it against Alabama. In 2023, the OSU women’s basketball team did it against UConn. ======================================== Getting to the Elite Eight for the first time since 1993 is big, but doing so over UConn (OSU was previously 0-6) puts this among the top wins in program history. UConn had made the last fourteen Final Fours, and the last eighteen Elite Eights. Three Big Ten teams made the Elite Eight. Iowa already punched their ticket to the Final Four. Ohio State (#3 seed) plays top seed Virginia Tech tonight for their shot and Maryland (#2 seed) plays top-seeded South Carolina tonight for theirs. (On the men's side, only one team, Michigan State, made the Sweet Sixteen, and none made the Elite Eight. Perhaps ironically, UConn did make the Final Four on the men's side as a #4 seed and is playing some of the best ball in the tournament.)

Buckeyes finish 22-14, but had enough success down the stretch after the coaching change that Diebler got the "interim" removed from his title and will be the head coach next season. He seems to have pretty good tactical and game-management skills, so the the big question (as with all college head coaches) will be recruiting, and along with that (the big new wrinkles facing all programs), managing the now-easy-access transfer portal and player expectations of NIL money.
