^I ain't talking about OSU football.  At least until the men's basketball team gets eliminated from the tournament.

The good news: The women's b-ball team won the Big Ten regular season championship on Sunday.  YAH!

The bad news: The men's b-ball team lost their fourth straight Big Ten game to Minnesota on Saturday.  All but knocking them out of the NCAA tournament.

So, who wants to talk about the spring football game!?!

Seniors Othello Hunter and Jamar Butler, playing what could be their final game in Value City Arena, combined for 10 points in a 15-2 run in the final 5 1/2 minutes today to rally the Buckeyes past Michigan State 63-54 for their second straight victory over a ranked team.

Ohio State shut out of NCAA Tournament

One year after reaching the NCAA championship game, the Ohio State men's basketball team has been shut out of the tournament.  The Buckeyes were not among the 65 teams whose names were on the brackets when the field was released tonight by the 10-person selection committee.

The NIT quarterfinal game between Ohio State and Dayton in Value City Arena will tip off at 9 p.m. Wednesday.  The game will be on ESPN2.

Go Bucks.  You need to win.  Especially since the Lady bucks choked once again in the opening round of the NCAAs

I'll be in the Schott cheering on the Bucks!!  However, I am from Dayton and my father and brother attended UD.  So, if the Bucks lose I won't be that disappointed.

OSU sells 16,500 tickets for UD game

Ohio State sold more than 16,500 tickets yesterday for the first men's basketball game in 20 years between Ohio State and Dayton.  Value City Arena has a capacity of 19,049.  The National Invitation Tournament quarterfinal will tip off at 9 tonight and be televised on ESPN2.  The winner advances to an NIT semifinal Tuesday in Madison Square Garden in New York.

Possible for another OSU-Florida matchup in the NIT finals... that would definately draw a lot of eyeballs in Columbus, and fill some seats in MSG.

Ohio State 74, Dayton 63

Ohio State (22-13) will play Mississippi (24-10) at about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday in Madison Square Garden.  The game will start about 20 minutes after the end of the first semifinal between Florida (24-11) and Massachusetts (24-10), which begins at 7 p.m. Both games will be televised on ESPN2.

Buckeyes earn shot at NIT title

The Buckeyes will play for the championship Thursday night against Massachusetts, which beat Florida 78-66 in the other semifinal, ruining the storybook ending to the NIT that would have pitted the teams that met last season for the NCAA championship.  After Massachusetts rallied past Florida in the second half, Ohio State survived a comeback by Ole Miss.  The Buckeyes (23-13) used full-court pressure and traps to force 21 turnovers and score 28 points off them.  But they let a 27-point lead early in the second half slip to as little as seven in the final two minutes before securing the victory.

How about the Buckeye basketball team???  They've just had back to back wins agains top-25 programs and are undefeated.  These guys are really surprising me!

They looked great versus Miami FL and Notre Dame. Hopefully we can make a run to win the Big10(11) and make it back into march madness.

Associated Press

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The message, Ohio State coach Thad Matta said, is that his team has played a lot of good teams and isn't too bad itself.

Evan Turner made seven free throws in the final 64 seconds, leading Ohio State past No. 19 Minnesota 64-58 Saturday night for the Buckeyes' fifth win this season over a ranked opponent.

Two of the wins have come this week, with the Buckeyes (17-5, 7-4 Big Ten) beating Purdue (No. 13 ESPN/USA Today, No. 12 AP) 80-72 on Tuesday night.

Men's basketball: Turnovers, big deficit on boards end streak

Ohio State (17-6, 7-5) had a four-game winning streak end and fell to fourth place in the Big Ten. The game was the first of a pair on the road for the Buckeyes.  They play at Northwestern on Wednesday night.

  • 2 weeks later...

The men's basketball team edged Northwestern on Sunday for their 20th win.  They end the regular season 20-9 and Big Ten record of 10-8.  Good enough for fourth place and a first-round bye in the Big Ten conference tournament.  They play Wisconsin on Friday.  Is 20 wins enough for an invite to the NCAA tourney?

Also, the women's basketball team won the Big Ten tournament on Sunday after finishing first in the regular season.

They are losing to Purdue by 20 at halftime. We play the winner in the championship tomorrow.

The Bucks are on a roll!  Yesterday Wisconsin - today Michigan State - tomorrow Purdue?

Purdue beats OSU, do you think the Bucks get in the Big Dance?

I feel they have a solid chance, but will be ranked low (10 or lower) in any region.

Good thing, the team has is very young and has no seniors.

With the tournament being "one and done", I hope that if the bucks do get in, the pressure doesn't overwhelm them.

I was wrong.  The bucks are an 8 seed in Dayton, in the Midwest bracket.    Siena?  I don't know much about them or how the teams match up.

Yea!  Buckeyes in the big dance!

THE GOOD NEWS: Get to play at Dayton. Short trip for the Buckeye fans.

THE BAD NEWS: If the Bucks beat Siena, they'll face the #1 seed Louisville.

Buckeyes OK with seeding: Playing in Dayton trumps concerns of a bracket slight

"Projected by some bracketologists as high as a No. 6 or 7 seed in the NCAA Tournament after its run to the Big Ten tournament championship game, the Ohio State men's basketball game instead received the No. 8 seed in the Midwest Region."

OSU's tickets to men's NCAA game sell out in minutes

School gets only 550; none sold to public, leaving many fans disappointed

Monday,  March 16, 2009 - 9:21 PM

By Encarnacion Pyle, The Columbus Dispatch

Ohio State University sold all of its tickets to the men's basketball game in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Dayton within minutes this morning. Although the University of Dayton Arena holds about 13,000 people, Ohio State received 550 tickets. Of those, only 144 went to students and faculty and staff members who were season-ticket holders. "There were no public tickets," said Dan Wallenberg, athletics department spokesman.  "We understand people are frustrated," he said. "But there's just a small amount of tickets for huge demand.  There's nothing we can do about it."

Ohio State (22-10) will play Siena (26-7), the No. 9 seed, at 9:40 p.m. Friday.

Buckeyes fall hard to relentless Saints

DAYTON — "The recipe was a familiar one.  Spot the opponent a bushel of extra shots via offensive rebounds, compound the problem with almost as many turnovers and hope to be rescued by Evan Turner.  It didn't work for Ohio State last night, and its season is over as a result."

OSU's Mullens heads to NBA

Freshman is fifth in 3 years to leave after one season

Friday,  March 27, 2009 - 3:09 AM

By Bill Rabinowitz, The Columbus Dispatch

Mullens announced that he will forgo his final three years of eligibility by declaring for the NBA draft.  Mullens committed to Ohio State as a high-school freshman and was considered one of the top recruits in the country last year while playing for Canal Winchester.  But going against players his size for the first time, Mullens often struggled.  He averaged 8.8 points and 4.7 rebounds a game.  He played an average of 20 minutes per 40-minute game, though that dipped to 13 minutes during the Big Ten tournament.  He played 22 of 50 minutes in Ohio State's double-overtime loss to Siena last Friday in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

I smell "development League" written all over this.

I'm not impressed.  Although I do not know this kids personal situation, he should keep his butt in school.  Staying at OSU might increase his draft options.

I wonder who advises these kids?

As I said before with Beanie Wells, I don't blame the college kids for going pro if they're certain to be drafted first round.  I couldn't turn that kind of money down!  And B.J. Mullens does come from a bad background - broken family, older brother jailed for drugs.

But I am starting to dislike college basketball's "one and done" rule for pro eligibility.  Ohio State has been hit hard by "one and done" players.  Greg Oden, Mike Conley and D. Cook in 2007, Kosta Koufos in 2008 and Mullens this year.  At this point, I'd be willing to go back to letting players go directly from high school to the pros.  This one-and-done is not helping college basketball/OSU and its probably not helping the NBA either.

Also below is an article on a way the one-and-done rule is not helping OSU academic standing...

Ohio State men's basketball: Scholarship decision pending

Team figures to lose one; a second hinges on rate of academic progress

Ohio State expects to forfeit one men's basketball scholarship for next season.  It is not certain yet whether it will have to give up a second.  The athletic department is awaiting word from the NCAA on the results of the latest Academic Progress Rate, which will not be announced publicly until May but is expected to be provided shortly to schools.

NBA draft: Mullens, as 24th pick, still has more to learn

Friday,  June 26, 2009 - 3:15 AM

By Bob Baptist, THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

B.J. Mullens acknowledged after a recent pre-draft workout that a lot of people don't think he's ready for the NBA and that he'll have to prove them wrong.  Last night gave Mullens more people to prove wrong, including talent scouts from a number of NBA teams.  Falling more than a half-dozen spots from where he was projected to be taken, the 7-foot freshman from Ohio State lasted until the 24th pick of the first round before the Dallas Mavericks selected him.  The Mavericks then traded him to Oklahoma City for French point guard Rodrigue Beaubois, whom the Thunder picked 25th, and a future second-round pick.

The Ohio State men's basketball team had their season opener on Monday.  Now I know its just the opening game and I know its just Alcorn State they played.  But damn, did the basketball buckeyes look great!  They've got almost everyone returning from last year's tournament team.  Led by pre-season all-Big Ten pick Evan Turner who got a triple-double of points, rebounds and assists in the opening game.

B10 basketball is absolutely loaded this year.  It's probably top to bottom the deepest league.  It's going to be a great season.  tOSU, Purdue, Mich, and Mich St can play with anyone in the country.

On a basketball related note: The basketball Bucks faced North Carolina at the Garden in NYC tonight.

UNC (ranked #4) showed why they are one of the top teams in the nation.  They got off to a quick start and dominated the Buckeyes for most of the game.  But OSU rallied late to narrow the UNC victory to 77-73.

Ohio State Loses Turner In 111-60 Win

Evan Turner did not return after injuring himself on a dunk attempt as No. 15 Ohio State took care of Eastern Michigan.

ESPN video of Turner's injury at "Turner out 2 months with spine fractures".

Scary looking injury for Evan Turner.  He'll be out for at least eight weeks.  Big blow to the team.  And unfortunately too similar to Lightly's season-ending injury last year.  Lightly got injured in game 7 last year.  Turner got injured in game 8 this year.

scary.  very scary.  I remember when my brother broke his leg playing football at OSU.  Its a scary thing to watch but you dont expect that in basketball.

OSU men's basketball: Turner's recovery expected

Monday,  December 7, 2009 - 2:54 AM

By Bob Baptist, The Columbus Dispatch

Evan Turner is "down but not out" and should be able to play again at the level he was if he has a normal recovery from the lower back fracture he suffered Saturday, said Vince O'Brien, athletic trainer for the Ohio State men's basketball team.  Turner suffered a transverse process fracture of his second and third lumbar vertebrae when his hands slipped off the rim after a missed dunk and he fell flat on his back from about 7 feet in the air.  O'Brien said Turner has some pain and is taking medication for it but is able to walk and has no limitations on his normal everyday routine.  He has a brace available to wear as needed for comfort, but he is not required to wear it more than that.

O'Brien said Saturday that the prognosis for recovery is eight weeks, which is Jan. 30.  In that case, Turner would miss 13 games, starting with one at No. 23 Butler on Saturday.  He would miss eight Big Ten games, five on the road.  Turner was averaging a team-best 20.6 points, 12.7 rebounds and 6.6 assists per game for the No. 15 Buckeyes and was being touted as an early front-runner for national player of the year and a top-five NBA draft pick in 2010.

Men's basketball: Turner leads Ohio State to upset at Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Evan Turner scored 23 of his 32 points in the second half to rally the Ohio State men's basketball team from a 13-point second-half deficit to stun No. 6 Purdue 70-66 tonight in Mackey Arena.  Turner had the last word in a terrific duel with Purdue's Robbie Hummel, who scored 35 points, 29 in the first half, when he made eight three-point field goals.  The Buckeyes (12-5 overall, 2-3 Big Ten) had lost three games on the road in their first five conference games.

OSU Basketball: The 1960 Championship Team - 50 Years Later

This year is the 50th anniversary of Ohio State's only NCAA Championship basketball team.  All five starters -- Jerry Lucas, John Havlicek, Mike Nowell, Larry Siegfried and Joe Roberts -- played in the NBA.  Lucas and Havlicek are Hall of Famers.  Even one of the team's bench players, Bob Knight, recame famous (and infamous) later while coaching Indiana to three NCAA titles and going on to coach the most Division I men's victories.

Expectations were high for 1959-60 because of a sophomore class led by phenom 6-foot-8 center Jerry Lucas from Middletown.  He was joined by a stellar recruiting class that included Havlicek, Nowell, Knight and Gary Gearhart.  Freshmen weren't eligible to play varsity, but the freshmen showed a glimpse of the future when they beat the upperclassmen during scrimmages.

The Buckeyes were loaded with offensive talent and averaged more than 90 points that season in an era that didn't have a three-point line or shot clock.  All five starters averaged in double figures, led by Lucas' 26.3 points (on .637 shooting from the field, which remains an OSU record).

The Buckeyes lost only three regular-season games, at Utah and Kentucky, and at Indiana after they'd clinched the Big Ten championship.  They had a first-round bye before playing Western Kentucky in the Mideast Regional semifinals in Louisville.  The Hilltoppers led 43-37 at halftime before Ohio State dominated the second half for a 98-79 victory.  The Buckeyes then beat Georgia Tech by 17 points to advance to the Final Four in San Francisco.

Before leaving for California, Havlicek cut the fingers on his shooting hand on a paper-towel dispenser in his dorm bathroom, requiring 10 stitches.  Even with Havlicek hampered, Ohio State handled New York University 76-54 in a national semifinal at the Cow Palace.  In the final against defending champion California in front of a partisan Bears crowd, the Buckeyes were considered the underdog.  However, the game was essentially over at halftime.  The Buckeyes led 37-19 and coasted to a 75-55 victory in front of a stunned crowd.

This same team of Buckeyes advanced to the NCAA title game the next two seasons as well.  Only to lose both times to Cincinnati.  UC spoiled an undefeated season in 1961 with an overtime victory.  And Ohio State lost again in 1962 after Lucas suffered a knee injury in the semifinal.  Lucas played against UC but made only 5 of 17 shots in a 71-59 loss.

This weekend, the group has returned to Columbus from around the country to celebrate the golden anniversary of their championship.  This afternoon, they were introduced at halftime of the OSU-Minnesota game in Value City Arena.

Four players score in double figures to help OSU clinch at least a share of Big Ten championship

Ohio State (24-7, 14-4; AP 7th) won 13 of its last 14 conference games after a 1-3 start.  The Buckeyes also clinched the No. 1 seed in the Big Ten tournament next week in Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.  Their first game will be at noon March 12 against the winner of the previous day's first-round game between the No. 8 and 9 seeds.  Those teams will be determined after the conference season ends Sunday.
