March 27, 201015 yr Great season Bucks! The last loss is always toughest, but I think Matta will continue to keep them a contender in the future.
March 27, 201015 yr Well, if at the beginning of the season, you would have told me that they'd get to the Sweet 16 and lose, I'd be satisfied. However after the way they came together during the season and played so well down the stretch, I'd be lying if I didn't say that this is a bit of a disappointment. Oh well, it was a great ride, they'll be back next year. And if Turner has played his last game in an OSU uniform, like many expect, he gave us a lot to cheer for, and I'll be hoping he succeeds at the next level. GO BUCKS!
March 27, 201015 yr Tennessee's strength just happened to match up perfectly with our weakness: Powerful interior offense vs. our weak inside game. The amount of easy inside baskets and second-chance inside baskets they were able to get past our inside defenders was just too high.
April 3, 201015 yr Catching up on this week's AP All-America Team news. Both the Men's and the Women's first-team selections feature Buckeyes: Lavender on AP All-America team Ohio State junior Jantel Lavender was voted a first team All-American today by the Associated Press. Lavender, the three-time Big Ten player of the year, joined Connecticut's Maya Moore and Tina Charles, Nebraska's Kelsey Griffin and Virginia's Monica Wright on the first team. Buckeye teammate Samantha Prahalis was an honorable mention selection. Turner joins freshmen on All-America team Kentucky's freshmen John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins were on the All-America team announced yesterday. Joining them were Ohio State junior Evan Turner, who received all but one first-team vote; Syracuse junior Wes Johnson and Villanova senior Scottie Reynolds.
April 3, 201015 yr And then Evan Turner won the year's big individual award from the AP later in the week... Ohio State's Turner is AP's Player of the Year INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Ohio State junior swingman Evan Turner is the runaway choice as The Associated Press' college basketball player of the year. The 6-foot-7 Turner, who averaged 20.3 points, 9.2 rebounds and 5.9 assists, received 54 votes from the 65-member national media panel. He is the first Ohio State player to win the award since Gary Bradds in 1964. Jerry Lucas of the Buckeyes won it in 1961 and 1962.
April 8, 201015 yr Ohio State's Turner skipping senior year to enter NBA draft COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- After collecting almost every national player of the year honor, Ohio State's Evan Turner is skipping his senior season to test himself in the NBA. The 6-foot-7 point guard is expected to be a top-three pick in the June 24 draft. Yet he said his decision wasn't an easy one. "This is the toughest thing I had to do," he said, his voice breaking. "But I was blessed with this decision and I have a great opportunity. I'm going to turn a leaf over and go on to the next stage of my life." April 9, 201015 yr Pretty much saw it coming. He gave the program three good years, I'd love to see him do well at the next level (except against the Cavaliers ;)).
April 9, 201015 yr You can't fault the kid for the decision at this point. His stock basically can't get any higher. Also, while we may lack Turner's star power next year, there is at least a credible chance we'll be able to make up for it with depth: We're returning all other starters, I believe, and adding a pretty impressive freshman class.
A very impressive class, consensus #2, including the high school POY Naismith Winner Jared Sulinger. I would have loved to have Turner stay but in all fairness to Mr. Turner, he had nothing to gain (national title not withstanding) and EVERYTHING to lose. He is a top 3 pick NO questions asked and possibly 1, certainly 2, maybe 3 pick in the lottery. I wish him all the luck in the world, William Bufford will surprise people next year, the man is one HELL of a scorer and has excellent defense... he will lead the team in scoring, incoming "pure" point guard Aaron Craft will handle the play calling, Lauderdale and Sulinger will rotate down low... not to mention the added stud that is Deshaun Thomas... All-in-all the incoming class features 4 of ESPN's top 100 recruits and 2 McDonalds All-American selections... of which Jared Sulinger was named the Mickey-D's game MVP. Things could be worse...
April 10, 201015 yr Despite Turner's departure to the NBA, OSU looks like they'll be more than fine next season. Here's an early early pre-season Top 25 from Sports Illustrated. The lineup of challengers for the ‘10-11 national title looks like this: 1. DUKE 2. MICHIGAN STATE 3. BUTLER 4. KANSAS STATE 5. PURDUE 6. VILLANOVA 7. PITTSBURGH 8. OHIO STATE: The Buckeyes lose Evan Turner, but they’re bringing in Rivals.com’s No. 2-rated recruiting class, which includes homegrown center Jared Sullinger and power forward Deshaun Thomas, to join senior wings David Lighty and Jon Diebler, as well as William Buford. 9. BRIGHAM YOUNG 10. TEMPLE 11. KANSAS 12. BAYLOR 13. NORTH CAROLINA 14. OLD DOMINION 15. WISCONSIN 16. GEORGETOWN 17. FLORIDA 18. VANDERBILT 19. SYRACUSE 20. GONZAGA 21. MISSOURI 22. XAVIER 23. WASHINGTON 24. MEMPHIS 25. MURRAY STATE And things could definately be worse. Kentucky lost four freshmen, all five starters and eight total players from their team. Time for Calipari to recruit more one-and-done's!
April 10, 201015 yr It looks the biggest question mark for the 2010-2011 basketball Buckeyes is likely to be the point guard position. Without Turner, OSU missing the point: Buckeyes have talent but need a ball-handler The most obvious issue left by Turner's departure: Who will succeed him at point guard? Backups P.J. Hill and Jeremie Simmons were seniors. Of the incoming freshmen, Aaron Craft is the only true point guard. Having an experienced surrounding cast should ease the pressure on a freshman point guard. If Matta is unwilling to entrust the position to a freshman, Ohio State could use a committee approach. June 25, 201014 yr Former OSU star Evan Turner is the #2 pick in yesterday's NBA draft. Turner goes to the Philadelphia 76er's. Two articles on the men's basketball program. The first is about the past, the second is about the future: 1) Pro pipeline: Turner becomes sixth Ohio State player in past four years to be taken in first round 2) OSU men's basketball: New faces could be factors at point guard
November 18, 201014 yr The #5 ranked basketball Buckeyes had an impressive early season win last night at #10 ranked Florida. After a close back-and-forth game for the first 30 minutes, Ohio State turned on the jets to win 93-75. Super freshman Jared Sullinger gets a double-double with 26 points and 10 rebounds. David Lighty, one of OSU's four returning starters, also got 26 points. This should be a promising season.
December 11, 201014 yr OSU had an unexpectedly exciting game against IUPUI last night that featured another breakthrough performance by super-freshmen Jared Sullinger. Ohio State 75, IUPUI 64: Sullinger's 40 are something Freshman helps Buckeyes rally and avoid stunning upset Sullinger, a 6-foot-9, 270-pound freshman, set an Ohio State record for freshmen with 40 points, including 26 in the second half, to help rally the No.2-ranked Buckeyes to a 75-64 victory over Indiana-Purdue-Indianapolis in Value City Arena. It was the first 40-point game by an Ohio State player since Dennis Hopson had 41 at Dayton in 1986. Sullinger also finished with 13 rebounds and set two more freshman records by making 16 of 23 free throws. December 20, 201014 yr The Lady Buckeyes made history in Madison Square Garden today . . . by losing to UCONN. With that victory over the Lady Buckeyes, UCONN won their 88th consecutive game - tying the record set by the 1971-74 UCLA men's teams. Meanwhile, the men's team had a better day with a blowout victory over South Carolina yesterday. Jared Sullinger continues to dominate with 30 points and 19 rebounds in the game. The Buckeyes stay undefeated at 10-0 and will likely stay ranked #2 in the nation behind Duke.
January 2, 201114 yr The Buckeyes finished their pre-Big Ten schedule with a 13-0 undefeated record and a #2 national ranking behind Duke. They started their Big Ten schedule on New Year's Eve with a 85-67 win at Indiana.
January 11, 201114 yr The Buckeyes won their first two Big Ten road games and held off #21 ranked Minnesota in their first Big Ten home game on Sunday to start with a 3-0 conference record. They'll be taking their 16-0 overall record and #2 national ranking to Michigan on Wednesday and against Penn State on Saturday at the Schott. And if you haven't yet seen the Buckeye's super-freshman Jared Sullinger play, you're missing one of best overall inside players in the nation. Sullinger earned Big Ten Player of the Week honors for the third time this season and Freshman of the Week honors for the eighth time this season. As much as Sullinger was hyped going into this season, its beginning to look like he was undervalued. Seriously, he is that good!
January 14, 201114 yr Both #1 ranked Duke and #2 ranked Ohio State played road games against unranked conference opponents last night. Duke lost by five at Florida State. OSU won by four at Michigan. So (assuming they win Saturday) does this mean the Buckeyes will be the number one team in next week rankings? SI.com thinks so in their update power rankings: Ohio State edges out Kansas for the No. 1 spot following Duke's defeat
January 14, 201114 yr Sports Illustrated also thinks pretty highly of super-freshman Jared Sullinger too. They named him their mid-season player of year: Prize Performer: Jared Sullinger has been more than the nation's top freshman; at midseason he's been its best player SI's Midseason Player of the Year is an inspiration to underestimated younger siblings everywhere: In 2006, when former Ohio State forward J.J. Sullinger first recommended that his middle-school-aged brother be recruited by the Buckeyes, an incredulous Thad Matta replied, "Fat Jared?" That same kid evolved into a McDonald's All-American and arrived on campus this fall at a bullish 6' 9" and 280 pounds. "Early in practice," Matta says, "[sullinger] was showing signs that he could really score around the basket"—so well that the OSU coach restructured its offense around him in the post despite having four upperclassmen in the starting lineup. Sullinger has rewarded Matta by averaging 18.1 points and 10.2 rebounds and leading the Buckeyes to a 16-0 record and a No. 2 ranking. January 18, 201114 yr Buckeyes back at No. 1 in Top 25 ESPN.com news services Updated: January 17, 2011, 1:10 PM ET On Monday, Ohio State returned to No. 1 in the ESPN/USA Today coaches' poll. The last time was 2007, when Ohio State went 35-4, finished the regular season ranked No. 1, eventually losing to Florida in the 2007 national championship game. Since that 2007 title game loss, the Buckeyes have constantly been in the top 10, even though the cast of characters has changed with several players jumping to the pros. And much of that stems from Coach Thad Matta, who never seems to take winning for granted even though he's done a lot of it in his seven years in Columbus. He's a sparkling 174-54 despite losing Greg Oden, Mike Conley Jr., Daequan Cook, Kosta Koufos and B.J. Mullens to the NBA after just one season each, and last year's consensus national player of the year, Evan Turner, a year early. (This year) they've done it with four returning starters supplemented by a solid group of first-year players led by Aaron Craft, Jared Sullinger and Deshaun Thomas. Ohio State (18-0) next plays Wednesday night against visiting Iowa as the Buckeyes' Big Ten slate continues. They cap the week at No. 22 Illinois on Saturday as seven of their next nine games come against ranked teams, including the Fighting Illini and No. 13 Purdue twice. January 22, 201114 yr The Buckeyes will stay at #1 for at least one more polling cycle. They survived a tough road game against #22 Illinois. Great all-round team play. But the Buckeyes were led in the second half by three freshmen - Sullinger, Craft and Thomas. ESPN: Jared Sullinger carries unbeaten Buckeyes past Illini
January 26, 201114 yr That was one hell of a game OSU played last night. The #1 ranked Buckeyes dominated #12 Purdue in a rout. Purdue just looked overwhelmed as the Buckeyes got off to a fast start and stepped on the gas. DISPATCH: Ohio State 87, Purdue 64: Rout leaves no doubts - Those questioning whether Ohio State deserves its No. 1 ranking get an emphatic answer ESPN: GAME RECAP - Six Buckeyes score in double figures en route to rout of Purdue ESPN: Bucks erase any doubts about No. 1 ranking
January 27, 201114 yr San Diego State got beaten by BYU and the Jimmer Fredette show last night. Which leaves the 21-0 Ohio State Buckeyes as the last remaining undeafted team in Division I-A!
February 1, 201114 yr Seven ranked teams got beat by unranked teams on Saturday. OSU were almost team number eight. But they survived with a one-point win at Northwestern. Duke got blown out at St. John on Sunday. Which means the 22-0 Buckeyes are an unanimous No. 1 team this week. Here's the recap of Saturday's game at Northwestern from ESPN: Northwestern misses shot at upsetting top-ranked Ohio State Fox Sports Ohio's home page also has an interesting poll about the Buckeyes: OHIO STATE HOOPS: Which team on the schedule will hand Ohio State their first loss? Illinois --------------- 10% Purdue -------------- 12% Minnesota ------------ 5% Wisconsin ------------ 14% Michigan State ------- 13% Nobody, 31-0 baby! -- 43%
February 2, 201114 yr It appears the Glenville pipeline has a leak with Aundrey Walker, the massive OL, signing with USC over OSU. There were questions about his work ethic, so it might not be that big of a letdown. Still waiting to hear about the LB from Virginia, Curtis Grant. He would be a huge get. OSU for whatever reason seems to have bad luck on signing day with these last minute decisions. I guess these recruits who wait to signing day to hold a big presser are more of the "look at me" bunch that don't fit as well in JT's system. On a related note, one of our signed recruits, Chris Carter out of Cle JFK, seems to have found himself in a bit of trouble for "fondling" some younger girls he was measuring for ROTC uniforms. Uh-oh..... HINT....HINT The Ohio State University Buckeyes Basketball Discussion
February 2, 201114 yr I have no idea what you two are talking about... That's OK, I frequently have no idea what I or MTS is talking about, either.
February 3, 201114 yr Sheesh! My power goes out for a few hours and this thread goes to heck! In Hts' defense, I did recently split the previous catch-all Ohio State University Athletics thread into separate Football and Basketball threads. Which made sense at the time. Actually, it still does. So, how bout those 22-0 Buckeyes?
February 4, 201114 yr So, how bout those 23-0 Buckeyes? Top-ranked Ohio State fights off rival Michigan to improve to 23-0 COLUMBUS, Ohio -- It's beginning to look more and more as if Ohio State isn't a typical team and center Jared Sullinger isn't a typical freshman. Sullinger hammered away inside for 19 points and 15 rebounds and No. 1 Ohio State came back from a sluggish half to beat Michigan 62-53 Thursday night, helping the Buckeyes open with 23 wins for the second time in school history. Full post and video highlights at http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/recap?gameId=310340194
February 6, 201114 yr The Buckeyes face their toughest stretch of Big Ten conference games starting today. Between today and February 22, the Buckeyes will play five games that feature three road games and four ranked opponents. They start today at Minnesota. Next Saturday at Wisconsin. Return home Feb. 15 against Michigan State. Travel to Purdue on Feb. 20. And return home on Feb. 22 against Illinois.
February 9, 201114 yr So how about those 24-0 Bucks? Ohio State looked strong on Sunday as they overwhelmed #20 ranked Minnesota 82-69. Five starters scored in double figures, led by senior Lighty with 19 points and freshman Sullinger with 18 points and 13 rebounds. On Sunday, #13 Wisconsin blew out a reeling Michigan State team. Now Wisconsin will get to face another #1 OSU team travelling into Madison (see article link below): Men's basketball: Wisconsin gets shot at No. 1 OSU again
February 12, 201114 yr So how about those 24-1 Buckeyes? GAME RECAP: Wisconsin gives No. 1 Ohio St. season's 1st loss The first half was a stalemate with OSU up by two at halftime. Then the Bucks dominated offensively and defensively to start the second half. OSU opened a 15 point lead. Then Wisconsin abandoned their slow-it-down game plan and started putting up 3's. Alot of 3's. And they kept going in. Pretty soon Wisconsin had made up the deficit and was leading. The Badgers held on to win 71-67. What? Did think you think the Bucks would never lose? But unlike the football team's loss at Wisconsin, the basketball team's quest for a national championship won't end here.
February 16, 201114 yr So how about those 25-1 Buckeyes? The basketball Bucks topped Michigan State last night 71-61, rebounding from their only loss of the season last Saturday. In an odd coincidence, this means Ohio State is now having a mirror opposite season to the Cavaliers.
February 21, 201114 yr The basketball Buckeyes fell at Purdue yesterday to suffer only their second loss of the season. It seems there's a pattern developing to OSU's losses this year. If you're a ranked Big Ten team - and you're playing at home - and at least one of your players has a career game, then you might just beat the Bucks. In other strange conincidences, Ohio State is still having a mirror opposite season to the Cavs. First, the Bucks win 24 straight games - while the Cavs lose 26 straight. Then, the Bucks lose at Wisconsin to break their winning streak - while the Cavs beat the Clips to break their losing streak. Then, the Bucks win their next game - while the Cavs lose their next game. Then, the Bucks lose their next game at Purdue - while the Cavs win their next game against the Lakers.
February 27, 201114 yr In other strange conincidences, Ohio State is still having a mirror opposite season to the Cavs. If the mirror opposite season between the Cavs and Buckeyes continues, then the OSU will lose to Indiana today!
February 28, 201114 yr The Buckeyes trounced the Hoosiers today. After the Cavs beat Melo and the Knicks. So the mirror opposite season linkage between the Buckeyes and the Cavs is now broken! Which is good - because I didn't want to root against the Cavs.
February 28, 201114 yr the miley cyrus video fallout has really undone this team! I don't know what you're talking about. Diebler, Craft and Sullinger are awesome. But Jared is clearly the best! But this is my favorite. Dallas with a voice as high as he is tall!
March 7, 201114 yr And in other news... Diebler missed a three-pointer. Diebler's been on fire the last two games. He had 10 of 12 three-pointers in the team's 21-point victory at Penn State earlier in the week. Then 7 of 8 three-pointers in yesterday's 28-point rout of Wisconsin. Diebler performance helped the team set a NCAA Division I record for three-point percentage by making 14 of 15 (93.3 percent). As reported in ESPN's OSU vs. WISC game recap: "In the midst of a raucous locker room after No. 1 Ohio State's 93-65 payback victory over 10th-ranked Wisconsin, Jon Diebler said he was sorry to his teammates. "I apologize for missing that one," he said. Everyone laughed."
March 7, 201114 yr Indeed he did, and everyone else on the team who shot a three shot 100% for the night. Therefore, by logical deductive reasoning, Diebler must be a horrible three-point shooter. :-)
March 11, 201114 yr If OSU fans wish to be uplifted instead of depressed, then stay away from the football thread and follow the basketball Buckeyes here. 8-) The basketball Buckeyes finished the regular season 29-2. They won the regular season Big Ten title with a 16-2 conference record. They are headed into the NCAA tournament (with a brief detour into the Big Ten tourney which starts at noon today against NW) as the number one team in the country. And on Selection Sunday, the Bucks will be the overall #1 seed in the tournament.
March 13, 201114 yr OSU wins their warm up games for the NCAA tournament (aka the Big Ten tourney). As expected, the Buckeyes are the #1 overall seed for the tournament and are the #1 seed in the East Region. On Friday they will face the winner of a #16 play-in game between Texas-San Antonio and Alabama State. And the game will be at the Q in beautiful downtown Cleveland! Go Bucks and Hello Cleveland!
March 18, 201114 yr OSU does not become the first #1 seed to lose to a #16 seed and rolls past UT-San Antonio. The Buckeyes will face George Mason on Sunday in the Q.
March 20, 201114 yr George Mason is not this year's George Mason. OSU leads 52-26 at halftime and wins 98-66. Goodbye Cleveland and Hello Newark! The Buckeyes will face #4 seed Kentucky on Friday.
