November 13, 200618 yr My grandfather told me that back in the 40's it was custom for bachelor parties to head down to Newport and at the time there were these little wooden noisemakers called "knockers" that all the men would knock against the tables and the stage to encourage the women to take off the next piece of clothing. Then at the end of the night they'd gather up all these knockers (again, I don't really know what these things looked like, and I don't know if they led to the slang use of knockers) and go throw them in the front lawn of the bride's parents house. So the next morning the neighborhood would wake up and everyone who was in the know would know where they came from, and they'd probably know the daughter was getting married off so some people were in on the joke. And of course the women would either be totally mystified or would keep tight lipped if they did know where those things came from!

November 16, 200618 yr ^ I almost got stung by a big-ass bee trying to take that shot. I'm sure some of the dozen or so people there must have thought I looked like a complete idiot waving my arms around.
