    "In the old pulverized coal fired furnaces like they used to use, the tubes were extended about the furnace floor to form a slag screen to cool the ash and protect the bottom.  That was before they made the slag screen of stud tubes across the upper part of the furnace below the boiler tubes. Those things were a pain to clean out. But if you used bituminous coal..."
