So, I have a dilemma.

Thanks.

I agree, time to move on.  I would interpret being the only person who didn't get a raise, despite doing an admittedly good job, as a big hint. Also, her pseudo concern about you looking for a new job may be a little bit of reverse psychology (i.e., a reminder, in case you hadn't thought of it until now).  You'll be better off in an organization comprised of more than just "yes" men.

What is the turnover on her position? If you are pleased with your job despite its pay, it might be worth waiting a year or two until someone more receptive/straightforward/etc. is in her position.

Best of luck!

As a manager with several layers of employees below me, I find this quite disturbing.

This managers ethics are in question.  Why would you tell the staff (I assume in an open forum) that they would all be getting raises, then not follow suit, especially after giving you a "good/satisfactory" review??  You realize this was her subtle way of saying, "Biotch...you're no longer wanted here".

If you want to stay, please make sure to get a signed copy of your review, then march right into Human Resources to review your employee file.  Actually you should review it ASAP - Who knows whats in it.  There is strength in numbers, your boss might not be liked. Find your allies in the department, you might find out that others are also having issues.

Sometimes HR has no idea what is going on with staff.  Do you have a mentor or adviser your TRUST that you can speak with and possibly advise you on how to proceed?

The hardest thing for me to do was to fire one person, however, the negative impact they were having over the staff outweight this individuals contribution.  The entire department walked into HR and resigned.  I felt it was better to get rid of the problem as the staff came up with solutions to redistribute this layer of management authority.  Sometimes a managers' manager doesn't realize they have a manager with no employee skills.  Talk to your bosses boss!

Also, the person that gave you this information, I would be leery of.  If they are telling you things, TRUST ME they are most likely telling others things.  A gossip like that is NOT to be trusted.  Just listen and don say/offer shit!

Personally, I would get my ducks in a row.  Connect with any management that you have worked with in the past and make "nice", if you feel comfortable with that person/s ask for career advise and see if you can use them as a reference.  Bottom line....Get the hell out of Dodge!

Oh...I didn't think about that.  You might be liked by upper management and your boss might be scared of your potential.

She might be trying to "thin the herd" for her own job security.

Thanks for all the input....

My current boss has only been in her role for about 7 months. The turnover for her role is not very often, however, she has already had 3 people quit working for her.

I did think for a minute about the whole "we hope you're not looking for a new job" line as a trick to make me think otherwise...to be honest I'm not sure if it's is true or not.

The person who told me about the salaries is a very close friend on mine and has access to see that information. He toyed with not telling me, as it could land him in trouble. He's not a gossip, but really thought I should know this, as he thought it crucial to my employment and advancement or lack their of.

I have thought about going to HR or her boss, but unfortunately, she is good friends with the people in both of those positions and I think going to them would just lead to more grief. Someone did go to HR about how she treated someone in an interview and HR went right to her and told her what was said and who the person was who said it!! AHHHH...Code of Conducts??!

Thanks for the advice of getting a signed copy of my review and looking at my HR file...I'll be doing that tomorrow!

I have started looking like crazy for a new job....

I just keep telling myself, that I'll be making the same as last year, and that I'll be okay....I was okay last year and I'll be okay this year....that and listening to my Patty Griffin CD is getting me through this

Thanks for all the input....

HR is going to tell the manager who the individual is who lodged the complaint against them if its a direct report.

Also, make a copy of everything in your HR File.  They are not going to let you take it outside of HR, but they will let you view there.

Also, if you friend has access to "privy" information .... he/she should have some dirt on your boss!

Just because she is friends with folks in HR it should not be used as an intimidation factor or a barrier to stop you from discussing issues.  That is what HR is for.

This sounds like one messy joint!

"I do not know why she dislikes me, other than I am the ONLY person in my group to stand up to her when it’s not a good business move."

That's your answer right there. As others have said, my gut reaction to what you've told us is - look elsewhere.

In the meantime, if there are moments when you need to stand up to her, consider how you present your opposition. I've worked for both men and women, and one thing I've noticed is that in general, women will take things far more personally than men will. Your saying "I don't know if that's best for the business" could be coming across as questioning her competence. You may not be questioning her ability, but that's how she takes it given what you've told us. Honestly though she sounds like an insecure yet overcompensating ballbuster - no one needs to put up with that kind of sh!t.

Thanks for all the input....

There's a sign.

Someone did go to HR about how she treated someone in an interview and HR went right to her and told her what was said and who the person was who said it!! AHHHH...Code of Conducts??!

And there's another...

Godspeed.

You'd be crazier not to.

There's no reason to resort to this. Everything will be okay. Step away from the Patty Griffin CD...

Oh. Wait. I thought you said Kathy Griffin CD.

My mistake. Carry on.

Good luck on the job search. Don't make the mistake and apply for any City of Cleveland job...... It's the same thing.... A few (our large number of City Council members) gets it guaranteed quality raises annually, while the stiffs get 0%,0% and 3%... or worse.

Man, Patty Griffin's first album - the one with Moses on it?  Good Lord did I love that album...

That's my favorite one!!! "Living With Ghosts"

It's one of my top 5 albums

. . .And everywhere is somewhere but nowhere is near.

Nonetheless, this gave me a much needed laugh!

Thanks...

HR is neither human nor a resource

Remember the Christmas party is coming up, there's always the chance she could get sloppy and knock over a potted plant or make a spectacular confession and that would help your cause.

I just thought.

Are you bonus eligible?

if so, when is the payout and must you stay employeed x amount of days into 2007 to collect it?

Ok, let's recap today's events. I went into work about 9:00. Coming in late was my silent protest, but as the day went on I felt guily and worked until 6:00. Ugh. I did get a copy of my review and HR file. I pretty much kept to myself all day, as I was really busy and remained at my desk. The few times I did get up, I saw my co-workers playing solitare and surfing on E-bay....AH, yes the ones that are now making 5K more than me. I went back to my desk and quietly fummed and went about my work. Around 4:15 a co-worker comes over to get a buffalo chicken dip recipe from me for her OSU party. At this point, this is the first time I see my boss all day. She says to me...oh I'd love a copy of that recipe too...which leads to more talking which eventually leads to talking about drinking. I think she may be a closet alchy..but I have nothing to back that up. Anyway, she asks me my thoughts on our xmas party and what she should do...inside I'm thinking give me the d*mn money for the party, since you screwed me out of a raise. But I just smiled and suggested taking the group to Dave and Busters. God, it's hard to be nice to her, much less hold a conversation.

Also, I am bonus eligible...so any thoughts on how long I have to stay there to recieve this? Sadly, I truly enjoy my job and the people I work with.....but it's evident I'm getting set up by her to fail.

Funniest thing said to me today from my boss is "I never ever know if you're here anymore." I just recently moved my desk to be closer to a co-worker who handles some of the same accounts as I do. I guess my boss not knowing if I'm there or not could be a good thing. But, I'm literally 25 feet away...all she would have to do is walk over.

PS...I've traded listening to the Patty Griffin CD to listening to the new Damien Rice song "9 Crimes."

By reading all of these posts, I can tell you are not alone on your issues, prfcttimeofday.  There's plenty of bosses out there that screw deserving people out of raises, or perhaps fear the talents of their employees.  I know you like the people you work with, but best of luck finding a new job.  I think you'd be even happier of not having to worry about your boss everyday.  I don't think I could ever stand that type of environment.  I worked for a company this summer where if you had a problem with your boss or another employee you could discuss it with them without fear of getting fired.  It was nice because it prevented tensions between employees, and created a more open and friendly workplace.

BTW, it's amazing how in some of these situations, the employee can really turn the tables, especially if it's a small company.  My sister worked for an extremely small production company in LA and had a boss that was mean.  My sister worked extremely hard, with long hours, but never ended up with a raise.  So she searched for a new job, and when she finally received it, left the production company (with 2 weeks advanced notice) before a HUGE project was due.  Disastrous for that company.  She was covering such a massive portion the project, and had the creativity and skills that her boss, and other employees lacked.  The result?  The production company is gone.  The other employees saw the diastrous situation and were looking for other jobs as well and left just a few days after my sister.

Just thought that would make you feel better.

How old are you?

Why are you being so nice.  Cant you read between the lines and understand what your "boss" is saying to you?

In regards to your bonus, look at your contract and talk to your lawyer.

Get the fuck out NOW...the writing is on the wall.

I'm 29 and yes I'm looking like mad for a new job...but in the meantime, I have to play nice, I can't afford to be fired. I watched her do that already to a co-worker, who decided to not play nice. She got rid of him within a week and he had been with company for almost 10 years.

We'll if you have to play nice, I understand.

If you don't play nice and get da ax, this is your chance to be an entrepaneur.  I left a job once and had to pay the bills so I did contract work.  If push comes to shove...you'll be surprised at how resourceful you can be!

Kinda late on this but I agree you should "explore your options". It's not a healthy environment for growth any way you cut it. Don't waste your energy on salvaging the mess.

Have you thought about going to your boss and expressing your disappointment in not getting a raise and then saying something along the lines of you want to make sure that doesn't happen again next year so you would appreciate her input about what exactly you could do to ensure that you receive a raise next year.  Although she will most likely give a BS answer, it may put her on the spot a little bit and may be interesting to hear what she comes up with.
