November 17, 200618 yr You had the same weather in TO that I had... still is one of my favorite cities though!
November 17, 200618 yr Yeah I saw white people outside and I knew the pictures had shifted to Toronto. Detroits architecture is very gothic looking. Has a lot of character; a shame so much has been burnt down, demolished, abandoned, etc.
November 17, 200618 yr U.S. urban policy vs. Canadian urban policy... a case study. Thanks for the great pics.
November 17, 200618 yr Ford Field looks like a giant warehouse. Good to see some cranes in downtown Detroit.
November 17, 200618 yr The Stag Shop scared me! I love the Toronto trolley cars, they remind me of the old shaker cars. ahh....memories
November 17, 200618 yr Great pics, really shows the difference between the value and investment of urban space in the US and Canada The Stag Shop scared me! One of my favorite things about Canadian city's is how there is a Gap next to a porno store next to a Zara next to a strip club....etc. And nobody cares, it all ends up running together and Canadian kids are not f'd up. The US is ran by zoning zealots and Madd Mothers.
November 17, 200618 yr Ford Field looks like a giant warehouse. Considering Ford Field was built into a warehouse and supposed to look like a warehouse, I would say your comment varifies a good job. Unless you were kidding, then, yeah.

The US is ran by zoning zealots and Madd Mothers. I must challenge these remarks. As someone who grew up in the Cleveland area and used to visit relatives in Toronto, I have always believed it to be unfair to compare Toronto with other US Great Lakes cities of similar size. "TO" (as they somewhat annoyingly call it), the largest city in Canada, is the financial and cultural captial of that country, and serves a purpose much like New York does in the US. In other words, the economy of that city is extremely diverse (unlike the now relatively moribund rust belt economies of such once-grand places like Buffalo, Cleveland and Detroit), and all the movers & shakers of our neighbor to the north have made considerable investments/efforts to insure its premier position as a magnet for the rest of the nation. It's only natural that thousands of Canadians and immigrants from abroad would flock there for opportunities (the sprawling Toronto suburbs keep mushrooming year after year, much like the development you seen in US Sunbelt exurbia) (additionally, the volatile political scene in Montreal over the last few decades alienated most of the wealthy and middle class "Anglos" from that city into moving to Toronto, boosting its influence). As for the US being run by "zoning zealots," let's not forget that the late urban planning icon Jane Jacobs moved to Toronto (spending the latter half of her life there). I believe she was instrumental in halting a major expressway from ruining neighborhoods in central Toronto, much like she did in the early 60's in Manhattan, preventing Soho (not yet then the trendy stomping ground it is today) from becoming engulfed by exhaust-choked overpasses, which, is essence, would have destroyed much of the character of "Old New York" as we still know it (although nowadays we have real estate developers who are accomplishing the same purpose!). And with all due respect, though Jane Jacobs advocated the presence of diversified commercial enterprises on densely situated blocks as an ideal of urban life, I doubt having a "porno store" or "strip club" next to a Gap is what she had in mind!! Furthermore, as per "Canadian kids not being f'd up," you haven't met my nephews! http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/
November 17, 200618 yr I have always believed it to be unfair to compare Toronto with other US Great Lakes cities of similar size. That wasn't the comparison. The point was that in general, Canada does urban much better than the US. And with all due respect, though Jane Jacobs advocated the presence of diversified commercial enterprises on densely situated blocks as an ideal of urban life, I doubt having a "porno store" or "strip club" next to a Gap is what she had in mind!! If you can't give a concrete example of Jane Jacobs attitude on the subject, then the point is moot of what she had in mind. Anyway, I was just saying I like how those things co-exist and nobody really cares, or thinks that it does harm to anyone. I am more of a live and let live type though. And I don't think that hiding all that is "evil" from kids makes them any more or less healthier. The knee jerk argument in the US is that those types of busineses breed uncontrollable vice and crime....and Canadian cities are some of the safest in the world. Again, it's just my opinion.
November 18, 200618 yr I love the Toronto trolley cars, they remind me of the old shaker cars. ahh....memories Why? Toronto replaced its ex-Cleveland PCC streetcars 20 years ago. Now that's a city. November 18, 200618 yr I love the Toronto trolley cars, they remind me of the old shaker cars. ahh....memories Why? Toronto replaced its ex-Cleveland PCC streetcars 20 years ago. Not because of the equipment, but how they ride the rails. It just reminds me of the old shaker rapid.
November 20, 200618 yr The best photos in this thread are of me damnit! How are you?? I take that back. I have a very strange expression on my face. Probably because I didn't realize ColDay was taking my picture until the last minute.
