speaking of Halloween, when you moved to NYC were you as surprised as I was that kids here go trick/treating in the afternoon after school and not a night? People from the suburbs even do that. I don't ever remember going out until after dinner, generally not until 6:00 at the earliest, and ending about 9. It's always strange to see people out collecting candy at 4:00 in the afternoon. No one does this in Ohio, right?

There are several issues at play

Density of commercial areas

Traffic

People

High number of residential buildings vs. single family homes.

My boyfriend, the Manny and I debated letting the whippersnapper go out alone for the first time on Halloween.  and our discussion was around what streets he could ToT on.  He was only allowed to go to SF Brownstones and NO buildings, period.

Granted when I was a lil kid, ToT was more like hiking instead of trick or treating due to the distance between homes combined with the distance from the street (when I was a kid we didn't have sidewalks on N/S Park and N woodland, etc) to a homes door.  It was exhausting.    the easier ToTing was West of W. Park or East of Warrensville.

your points about density, traffic, etc make sense, but as I mentioned, people who are from the suburbs even told me they went out early, so I don't know. Against my better judgement walked around on Halloween (and thank goodness that stupid parade is nowhere near where I am) and I did still see some kids out with their parents even at 8 and 9pm. Maybe it's changing. One thing that's unique in New York is going from store to store in search of candy. I walked by the Best Buy on Union Square and they had a sign on the door that they were "out of candy" for the night, so don't bother. I was tempted to ask how early that was posted, and that there's a Walgreen's right across the street so replenishing the supply would have posed no problem--lol

Get back to suburban Ohio, city slickers! Trick-or-Treat is early now here too. Almost all of them are over by 7 and start 4:30-5:30. It's been about 10 years. And this time around in my town there was an "Official Route".

Yes, that is weird going to a store to ask for candy.  That is too funny, Walgreens is DIRECTLY across the street.  That is just lazy.

I think wonder if it's different in various states and burbs.  I think it's weird kids not to be able to trick or treat.

However, the further away from the city the better trick or treating and scary stuff is easier to pull off.  If Halloween fell on the weekend, I can remember going out to scary hayrides and haunted grounds in Chagrin Falls or Chersterland or Chardon.  Pick pumpkins one day and go out for fright night the next weekend.  Kids in NYC don't have those experiences.  We take the kids to westchester to pick the big pumpkins or pick a christmas tree.

you mean like this? ? (and why do you have to go to Westchester to get a Christmas tree? You can buy one on the corner for "only" $100. or is that even too low these days?)

I've always loved blood and gore and haunted houses, circuses, woodes, etc.  As a kid my extended family always went out to pick pumpkins or a christmas tree. Having 29 first cousins, it's great to experience those things together as a family.   Picked on...have it processed  then take home and start to decorate.

I always celebrated christmas in Cleveland.  When my nephew moved in with me, then I started to decorate with a christmas tree, bought at the park, but we never really did anything, unless I had a staff party.  When Thing No. 1 and No. 2 had children, they wanted a tradition to start so going out to pick a tree was something they could start.  I'm 53 years old and every year, I put the Angel on top of my parents tree.  Everyone knows, the tree is NOT to be lit, until I put the Angel on top. PERIOD.  That's one of our family traditions.

Last year when the whippersnapper came to live with me, he NEVER experienced "a Christmas".  He was 10 years old and had never experienced the holiday season.  So I wanted to make sure he experienced Christmas the best damn Christmas and Three Kings day a kid could experience.  Picking out a tree, picking out garland, all the decorations, etc.  He is too old for Santa, but everything else he appreciated.  He had Christmas overload in Cleveland.  He built a snowman (and watched a squirrel take the nose) , wrapped presents, made christmas cookies, listened to holiday music, etc. all the things some of us take for granted.  Learning to make coquito with my uncles, since my grand father passed away and didn't leave a complete recipe.  My brother and I explained every scene of "a christmas story" and Higbee's to him.  Then making sure he understood Three kings and having a good Roscon de Reyes.

Man lighting up on the train by Dominic Wahl-Stephens, on Flickr

FIrst someone fell on the tracks, delaying the train, so this guy couldn't get to his doctor appointment. Then the MAX closed the doors on him when it got to his stop. So he thought he'd light up his pipe for a little revenge before exiting...

No drive along Route 66 in the Mojave Desert is complete without a stop at Roy's Cafe and Motel. A real estate investor bought up the entire complex and has been working to restore and preserve it. The gas station reopened in 2008, the neon sign was repaired and repainted in 2019, and plans are in the works to reopen the cafe and motel eventually.

^Nice shot. Glad to know that Roy's is being preserved.

I dunno, we can't see his face. We'll just have to take your word lol. I once saw John Waters at just about that same spot. They probably all live in those buildings on the High Line for the 1 percenters.

New York Fashion Week, Tribeca -- the orangey tones are the result of being in the face of direct sunlight at precisely 4:55 pm. Well, that and my crummy camera and poor editing skills. The group first faded back into the shadows for a pic, but the aggressive fashionista paparazzi on hand shouted "no, you look better in the sun!" lol. I had no idea who the designer (the man in the white coat) was, but determined he's Prabal Gurung. I think 🤔

Ever since noticing this one in the Cincinnati CBD, I've been on the lookout for other mailboxes with the old U.S. Mail logo:

51487191865_e269d97231_6k.jpg

I always thought it looked more like an empty boot than an eagle

i always thought the one on the side was awkward. the one on the street facing side is better, but those usps logos need work.
