June 7, 200916 yr Oh man, the popped collar thing was instantly identified as douchebaggery, unlike the mullet which took 20 years to be demonized as white trashy.
June 8, 200916 yr ^Love the granite curbs they're installing. Classy. About as classy as Sedamsville. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
June 9, 200916 yr I think YOU just dissed Sedamsville, sir. Stay classy, Green Hills. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
June 9, 200916 yr our building was built in 1900 and i always wanted to get a shot of this funny little vintage sign on our fire escape. so here it is: ^ it's hard to read as it has been painted over a ton, but i think it says: "notice anyone placing any emcumbrances on this balcony will be fined ten dollars."
June 10, 200916 yr Got it last Fall, but didn't start to see its full potential until recently; I was shooting with a 24-120mm VR zoom, and under critical examination that lens just isn't sharp a lot of the time. I picked up a used 28mm AF 2.8 at the camera shop near my house for $100, and it's become my favorite for a lot of walking-around photography. It's pretty sharp, and just the right focal length for a lot of what I do. I've been using the el-cheapo Nikkor 70-300mm non-VR zoom too, and it's not bad for the $139.95 I paid for it. I shot these with it.
June 13, 200916 yr I'm very pleased with my purchase of a Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG macro (1:1). It was a little pricey but worth it for the macros alone, which is what I was aiming for. I have a collection of manual focus macros, but they aren't worth anything when you have moving objects, like butterflies or flowers that blow in the wind. For these, I was shooting at a pretty low aperature to make up for the fact that I sold my flash unit a while back, so I was having to work with what light there was without having to compensate by raising the ISO levels up. More on these images coming soon in another update...
June 13, 200916 yr Last Sunday (June 7, 2009) 1913 Case 12-25 Tractor Two-Cylinder Horizontally-Opposed Engine 7-inch bore, 7-inch stroke, 540 C.I., 600RPM, 25 Horsepower 9,000 lbs
June 14, 200916 yr 1935 Chevy, unrestored original. Good chrome all around, no rust or dents. Apparently repainted at some time, but long ago and not a fancy job, probably done by a local mechanic. Inside is about as good as the outside. Note the suicide doors. I knew the 4-door models had them on the back, but I never knew the 2-doors had them.
June 14, 200916 yr Is it for sale? I'd be more than glad to take it off the owner's hands. :-o Gorgeous vehicle.
June 14, 200916 yr Is it for sale? I'd be more than glad to take it off the owner's hands. :-o Gorgeous vehicle. Sorry, I already called dibs on it. It's not for sale anyway; one of the guests at a weekend open house at a friend's place drove it there. It was the same gathering where I took the photo of the Case 12-25 tractor. There was a restored red and white '58 Edsel station wagon, very rare, too. It was very sharp, and somehow I failed to get a photo of it. I used to have a '38 Chevy 2-door sedan, not a lot different from the '35 in the photo except that it was dark gray and the doors were hinged at the front. It was a surprisingly comfortable, nice-driving car.
June 17, 200915 yr Pardon the gloomy look. It was cloudy and it was starting to get dark out. But my dad and I loved this locomotive so I got a few shots of it. N.S.H.R. 774, sitting in the Lock Haven, PA Norfolk Southern yard: There are some other new HDR's in that gallery if you want to check them out.
June 18, 200915 yr Another shot of N.S.H.R. #774. If anyone is wondering what type of locomotive it is, it's an old EMD SW8. I think that paint job is less than a year old.
June 19, 200915 yr Thanks Rob. Yeah there are a bunch of local railroads owned by the North Shore Railroad System around here and each one has their own distinct color schemes. It's pretty cool to see them share locomotives with each other. They have some cool photos on their site if you are interested.
June 20, 200915 yr Nice shots. I really need to learn hdr. Took a walk through Detroit's middle eastern neighborhood of Warrendale and fell victim to wonderful Detroit cuisine Swear these were the best wings I've had in ages.
June 27, 200915 yr That's a rather handsome bridge; nice, clean lines without being sterile. The housing projects look like they won't be any great loss to Williamsport's aesthetics. In almost every photo from Pennsylvania, the background has wooded hillsides. In Northeast Indiana, the background usually is miles of sky with a distant, flat horizon. I've always loved Pennsylvania's rolling-to-mountainous terrain, and an Air Force buddy of mine from Renovo who came home with me a couple of times thought our wide-open spaces were spectacularly beautiful.
June 27, 200915 yr Yeah, I can see why your friend loved the flat landscape. Renovo is about an hour away from me and it is in the middle of mountains. Williamsport is in a somewhat wide valley, and the mountains here are Ridge and Valley Appalachians. In Renovo, the mountains are more dense, so that's probably all he was used to. Renovo is actually on my list of places to visit. I know there isn't much left of the PRR shops, but I still want to see the area. It's supposed to be absolutely gorgeous in the Fall, so I'll probably go then. On a further note, that mountain, which is in pretty much every southern facing photo taken in the Williamsport/Lock Haven area is Bald Eagle Mountain. It's one of the more significant ridges in the Ridge and Valley Appalachians.
July 3, 200915 yr ^ One of the girls that lived in the flat below me during my first year of grad school drove the weinermobile for Oscar Mayer. It was fun watching her try to parallel park it into the street parking the one day she brought it around to show everyone. [great story, AJ93...way to keep us riveted....] When are they rolling out the WeinerBRT?

[great story, AJ93...way to keep us riveted....] When are they rolling out the WeinerBRT? The thing is a beast - 7 tons on a GMC W-series truck chassis, with a 6-liter Vortec engine. I don't guess the mileage would be very high, although the aerodynamics look quite good.
July 3, 200915 yr I think I remember seeing one when I was very young, living in Delaware. Such a cool marketing concept.
July 15, 200915 yr my 16 year old dayton niece and i got a kick out of this 'night at the roxbury' type guy we saw on the ny water taxi ride the other day. of course i had to get his picture!
July 15, 200915 yr Drove around the city today and saw this abandoned factory on a desolate 4 lane one-way. I drove right into the complex. Don't know why, but I actually find this beautiful....and ironic. All this talk about replacing automotive industry with green jobs....to see a literal example of a natural product being manufactured in a man-made structure. The place was so peaceful, only a few motorists drove by. Later on a patrol car briefly paused with an officer instructing to be careful. Indeed, as metal hung dangerously above. It will probably be demolished in the near future, but for a moment it almost seems worth saving as it is
July 15, 200915 yr ^ wow, that is a beauty of an abandonment. great shot. a delicate and fantastic ruin. edit: just for the rustbelt record, do you happen to know what was once made there?
July 15, 200915 yr Interesting photo. That place has been vacant for a long time, to have deteriorated so far.

That's what I've been hoping to figure out. I'm not entirely sure if it was auto related. July 15, 200915 yr This view never gets old: Reminds me of The Guiding Light! Or what was the soap opera's name with Cin. as the backdrop in the opening?
July 16, 200915 yr This view never gets old: Reminds me of The Guiding Light! Or what was the soap opera's name with Cin. as the backdrop in the opening? don't remember if it was the Guiding Light, but you're right, there was a soap with Cincinnati as a backdrop, which only makes sense, since most of them were sponsored largely by P&G. Just looked it up, it was the Edge of Night http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Edge_of_Night http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/
July 16, 200915 yr The new Via Bella. Taken from the also new Market Street Bridge. Downtown, Williamsport:
July 16, 200915 yr a traffic circle right off a highway exchange? very interesting. and yay for nightshots!
July 16, 200915 yr Yep. That street used to be 4 lanes wide with three signaled intersections. It used to be the link for US 15 from the the old Market Street bridge to the highway. Once they built the new bridge and the SPUI linking Market Street to the highway, there was no need for the 4 lanes. Plus that ramp in the photo cut into the old street. So they reconstructed it and replaced each intersection with circles. If you look at Williamsport on Google Maps, the satellite view is about 4 years old and the original street is still there along with the old bridge.
July 16, 200915 yr Boston, yesterday. I enjoyed the angle, which aligned three different bridges that aren't really in line with one another. Plus a train and some boats for good measure. Later there was a plane in this view, and presumably cars on the bridge (odd that this shot didn't catch any, in fact), and if only a train had been crossing at the time, it would have been quite a collection of transportation modes in one photo!
