July 26, 201212 yr Yeah, he is a scientist of some kind and the family moved to the US about a year before the Soviet collapse. The weird thing is he couldn't go back to Russia to travel after he was 18 or else they'd immediately put him in the army. So he had to become a US citizen simply to be able to visit his relatives in Russia.
July 29, 201212 yr For whatever reason, this has been an incredibly popular photo on my fickr. I took this exactly 7 years ago.

August 1, 201212 yr Anyone notice that there are no cars in that Moscow photo? I have a buddy that drove across Russia in 2007 who says that there are thousands of buildings that look like that and most of them are in terrible condition.
August 1, 201212 yr An abandoned farm house along Baili Ridge Road along a ridge top in Webster County, West Virginia.
August 1, 201212 yr Hmmm. Sherman, for a minute there I thought you had sneaked into my house while I was passed out from the contents of that bottle.
August 1, 201212 yr An abandoned farm house along Baili Ridge Road along a ridge top in Webster County, West Virginia. I spent more time getting car sick going around and over the hills in that part of West Virginia as a kid than I care to remember. My grandfather grew up just a few miles north of there and we regularly went down to visit relatives as a kid. Somewhere around there is an abandoned farmhouse where my great grandparents lived, but its not in as good a shape as this.
August 1, 201212 yr There wasn't much to redeem in this house. The kitchen was the nicest room - I'll take that refrigerator any day. If I could haul it out and clean it up, an easy $1000 could be made!
August 2, 201212 yr Hmmm. Sherman, for a minute there I thought you had sneaked into my house while I was passed out from the contents of that bottle. Rob is that how you keep your place!
August 2, 201212 yr A detail of a bank at the corner Woodhill Road and Sophia Avenue in Cleveland's Woodland Hills neighborhood. I cannot find anything about this bank - can anyone shed some light on its history? There is a book in the Images of America series called Cleveland Slovaks by John Sabol - on pages 77-78 there is info on Tatra Savings which was headquartered in this building. http://books.google.com/books?id=TetMKIYctNIC&q=tatra#v=snippet&q=tatra&f=false
August 2, 201212 yr Hmmm. Sherman, for a minute there I thought you had sneaked into my house while I was passed out from the contents of that bottle. Rob is that how you keep your place! Well, it's not that bad, but I'm working on it. Seriously, I have accumulated a lot of clutter because of too many family-related peripheral issues that have kept me from managing my own life, but I haven't let things descend into filth and little by little I'm getting rid of stuff I don't need and trying to reestablish order. I'm a firm believer in a place for everything, and everything in its place, but my life got derailed about ten years ago by a situation outside my control, and health issues in the interim have added to the distraction. I think I'm on the way back, now.

My grandfather grew up just a few miles north of there and we regularly went down to visit relatives as a kid. Man, wasn't that annoying as a kid? Going over the slightest ridge in a car and having your stomach try to shoot through the roof? My grandparents lived out in Monroe County and we'd go shopping in Wheeling sometimes. During the car ride back I'd roll up into a ball because I would get really queasy. And I'd always get a headache from the elevation changes. Meanwhile, as adults we seek out these roads in our cars and on our motorcycles because they're fun.

I had a particularly week stomach as a kid and couldn't handle long car rides without getting sick. Even as a teenager I couldn't ride most amusement park rides. I'm very fortunate that my kids aren't as bad as I was though.
August 3, 201212 yr A picturesque sunset at Wrightsville, Ohio along the Ohio River. Been working on a series of images of the growing Amish population in Adams County, which is significant, and I decided to end my trip out that way with a quiet drive along the river.
August 4, 201212 yr Very beautiful photo. Looking at it, I can imagine myself sitting on the riverbank as the sun sets.
August 7, 201212 yr Robert: You'll like this one then. From Saturday: Sheldon Marsh in northern Ohio along Lake Erie comprises of some of the last remaining undeveloped stretches of shoreline in the Sandusky Bay region. The preserve features contiguous wetlands and extensive wetland habitat with over 300 bird species, several notable wildflower species, and miles of beach.
August 9, 201212 yr Yes, indeed. Thanks for sharing that, Sherman. A splendid scene, perfectly captured.
August 11, 201212 yr ^^ well I did yard work at my bro's house instead of shooting today ^ i really like that shot EVD
August 20, 201212 yr ^I noticed that on Friday. It's the work of Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama (at least that's what it looks like), who's got a retrospective at the Whitney. She's 82 now but lived in NY in the 60's, at a time when that was unheard of for a single woman from Japan, and hung out with all the famous names from that era (Andy Warhol, etc...). http://whitney.org/Exhibitions/YayoiKusama http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/
August 21, 201212 yr ^ yes, the developer paid for that. they are angling for very wealthy buyers for sure. a buyer would have to have more $ than to sense to live on 14st, believe me, especially next the meatpacking, but no doubt it will be a well insulated fortress of solitude. ps- hey nowww! ;)
August 30, 201212 yr I was presuming "more" would've been more than one photo ;). Welcome back, Mr. 415. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

September 11, 201212 yr Wow those sparks are crazy. I remember standing on that circle pier thing in the river taking pics back in 2006.
September 11, 201212 yr Liberty Theatre/Paramount Theatre in Youngstown, Ohio, abandoned 1976. The Wick Building is located at 34 Federal Plaza West in Youngstown, Ohio, and was completed in 1910. The 13-story building was designed by D.H. Burnham & Company in the Chicago School architectural style, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

September 12, 201212 yr An exterior view of Youngstown's Liberty-Paramount Theater from 2008. One of the vintage photo murals at sidewalk level, showing the theater and the street activity in more prosperous times.
September 13, 201212 yr Thanks Rob for sharing those! Here is one from inside the Stambaugh Building in Youngstown:
September 17, 201212 yr Shot from Bellevue Hill Park in Clifton Heights, Cincinnati last night: A also got a panorama from the same location.
