>What's with all the smoke from the Delta Queen? I assumed it would have been converted to oil-fired boilers by now, but it's smoking like a coal burner. I guess even an oil burner can smoke a lot if you crowd it, though.

I dunno the details, I've never been aboard the Delta Queen.  It is about the only time of year when they really push what these boats can do, I'd guess they hit somewhere around 20 knots.  I agree that the action of its drive shaft turning the paddle wheel is both impressive and hypnotic.  And lined up among all the newer boats, it's just like immitation row houses on a street to either side of the one remaining original row house.  The wood exterior looks much different than steel even from afar.

There is a new old boat in Cincinnati, the PA Denny, which had been on the Kanawah River in West Virginia since 1938 but is now being used as a research boat for student groups in Cincinnati.  They go out and do water tests and things like that.  It has a diesel engine pushing its paddle wheel though.

B&B operates three imitation stern wheelers in Cincinnati...the biggest one, The Belle of Cincinnati, operates primarily by three diesel turbines but the paddle adds approximately 5mph to its top speed.  To save fuel they typically cruise with just one engine and the paddle needs about $150,000 in repairs to become operational again.  It also has a bow thruster.  A few years ago when they let the Belle race the Delta Queen and Belle of Louisville for the first time it dusted them both but was disqualified for having diesel engines.  The owner Al Bernstein had the women crew members distract the Belle of Louisville's crew while the men jumped the fence and stole the trophey.  They brought it back and took off back to Cincinnati.  To punish them the Coast Guard officially designated B&B's fleet as pirate ships and they have to fly the pirate flag or else they are fined.

Took these in Mall B in Downtown Cleveland.  Now is probably the most beautiful time of year.

Excuse my ignorance - what is it? LOL

I'm still peeing in my pants over my new camera. I'm still playing around with it, but with the full-frame sensor, I can finally take advantage of my 20mm (the 1.5x smaller sensor on the D70 made the 20mm a 35mm...). It has a ISO 100 setting (although it is slightly less contrasty), and the noise is impossible to differentiate on a print.

Hell, I was looking at some 24 inch prints last night that were taken at ISO 6500... and were amazing.

It's FL Guy posting after one too many beers!

Hint, this was taken on the same day.

Oh that's really awesome. I've read that when rain hits the surface, it drains into hundreds of little one-inch pores, so that no rain water drips and hits the ground below.

WHAT A CUTE DOG.

I love retrievers in general. We had a golden a few years ago who gave birth to 12 lab retrievers. They are SO ADORABLE.

My dad loves trains, I'll pass it along.

Since there is a loose transportation theme in this thread, here is neat bus in the vintage fleet used in Malta. We went on a whirlwind travel fest. We hit 6 (7 if you count an airport transfer) countries in 10 days. I will post more of course when I get caught up.

there were dozens of them at that bus depot. I have no clue of the origin. I think they may be from a british company.

Here's my contribution for the day.  I was babysitting a rabbit that looks (and acts) like a dog a few weeks ago.

No pics of it gnawing on a bone?

No, but I probably could've gotten one of him humping a stuffed bunny.  That seems to be his favorite activity.  :-P

that rabbit is awesome  lmao

Rob, I LOVE that train photograph. Please post more :)

The view from my apartment tower in downtown Lexington, Kentucky. Phoenix Park is in the foreground, Courthouse Plaza is to the right. The buildings to the left, extending for one block towards the upper left will most likely be demolished for a 40-story tower called Centrepointe.

Rob's web site is pretty spectacular!  I keep checking the various photo sets and hoping that more of his pictures from the 1960's and 70's will be scanned and posted.

Isn't a 40 story building going to be a bit overwhelming for Lexington?  How about a 19 and a 21??

Well, it would be just shorter than the blue building on the left. And I should correct myself, it's now down to 35 stories. But yeah, guidelines that were almost adopted as rules would have capped major developments to 15 stories in the urban core to prevent something like Centrepointe to come in.

Thanks, guys! There are more photos of that locomotive on that trip in a recent post on my site.

There are also photos of some pretty neat firefighting apparatus in the Baltimore Fire Museum in this set.
