Gorgeous photo Cory!!

So for my 1000th post, I wanted to post a photo.  This is the beginning of the planned Church Street Transportation Center project which includes a parking deck, apartments, and the relocation of the Susquehanna Trailways Terminal:

San Fran is looking groovy.

Love this. Wasn't sure if it should go here, or a trnsportation thread

That's interesting. I always thought you could probably learn a lot about urban systems by studying the human body. Similarly, you can learn about cultural by studying ecosystems. Who the hell has time for that sh!t though.

Williamsport is blessed with some very talented and eclectic graffiti artists, and today I found one of my favorite artist's work on a railroad tunnel near Downtown:

Jim Tarbell, also known as Mr. Cincinnati, walks along Main Street in the Bockfest 2010 parade.

Cool outfit! Anyone know anything about it?

He kept describing himself as a monk.

Beautiful shot, Calvin. The starkness and the transition of color temperatures, from sky to ice, makes it an unusual scene.

Everyone loves Tarbell!

He used to come into my restaurant all the time. Always ordered mussels.

I went to the Botanical Garden to take some pics to enter the PD photo contest for pics of orchids.  If you feel like it, check out my blog (link below) and vote in the poll to help me pick the three best to submit.  This is my favorite, but I am not sure if it is an orchid.

I don't know anything about orchids, but that butterfly sure knows how to color-coordinate. What a sense of style!

C-DN and CS, both of those are terrific pictures.

I'm assuming the lakefront shot is somewhere in Lucas Cty, if not Toledo itself?

Apparently I was near St. Louis somewhere in the blur that is the last two weeks.

Wow!!  Looks like they're either just got pounded, or are about to get pounded by that storm.  Great photo.

Great city shots.

2 more beautiful shots above.

On Saturday, my friend Jesse and another friend did some urban exploration:

C-Dawg, there's a book I think you might enjoy; I've referred to it in response to some other Great Lakes ships photos on the forums, but here's the info again:

End of an Era: The Last of the The Great Lakes Steamboats

David Plowden

Published 1992 by W.W. Norton & Company

ISBN 0-393-03348-1

David Plowden's photographic skill and craftsmanship are at least equal to those of Ansel Adams, Eliot Porter, and other renowned photographers of the 20th century, and many of his images show the man-made elements of our environment, from small towns and ghost towns of the great plains, to ships, railroads, and the gritty industrial scenes of rust-belt cities.

The photo subjects are the ships, their ports, their machinery, and the people who make everything work. The reproductions, layout, and typography are excellent, and Plowden's narrative is knowledgeable, informative, and beautifully written.

Wonderful! You may want to browse other books of his, once you've gotten your hands on that one.

Meanwhile, staying warm and dry on land, eagerly awaiting Spring:

Beautiful view. I love the time of year when the buds on the trees are getting all fat and pink and ready to pop open in a few weeks.

Wow great bridge shot!!

The new Chandler Medical Center in Lexington, Kentucky, part of the UK Healthcare network, is progressing nicely. This photograph is gracing the cover of a magazine for May. Taken March 27, 2010.

MRNYC, your cell photo in the rain reminds me of the painting Paris Street: Rainy Day,  by French artist Gustave Caillebotte, which hangs in the Chicago Art Institute.

Ditto.

Although photos like that give me vertigo for some reason, I love it.  That's a lot of glass...

This was seen during Downtown Williamsport's April First Friday.

An established and historic stationary shop, Plankenhorn's, usually chalks up the sidewalk during First Fridays:

The Updegraff Hotel - 1892:

4526221901_fb40970764_b.jpg

From “Historical Walking Tour of Downtown Williamsport”:

"Daniel Updegraff (brother of abolitionist Abraham) built this hotel, the largest of its day in the city, on the site of the old Hepburn Inn, where abolitionist Fredrick Douglass spoke when he came to Williamsport in the 1870’s. The old structure may have provided temporary shelter to runaway slaves before the Civil War. The Updegraff family eventually sold the building which became the Ross Hotel. In the 1920’s the Ross Hotel became an annex of the Lycoming Hotel to handle its considerable overflow of as many as 150 tourists a night. The hotel is now the Center City Building, but its distinctively Second Empire-style façade and gabled roof remain."

Nice photo. Williamsport has some pretty good buildings; I'm impressed with what i've seen of it in your photos. It's a lot more city than I expected in that part of the state.
