Cory, what was the light source inside the tent?

Regarding polarizing filters, most of what I've read indicates that you need a circular polarizer for AF camers, but I've read a couple of opinions that said it doesn't matter. With my first AF camera (D70) I bought a circular polarizer and never tried anything else, so I'm not sure about that. I did shoot a bunch of video several years ago using a non-circular polarizer, and the AF on the camcorder worked just fine.

I've seen a couple of opinions that Hoya polarizers have a warm cast to them, and that was my experience with the one that I bought with the D70. Almost everything is correctible in Photoshop, but I didn't like the color my photos had, so I bought a Nikon circular polarizer (about 3X the price of the Hoya, if I remember correctly), and my photos with it did seem to have a more neutral color balance.

That is a LED flashlight, pointed up.

Thanks all for the feedback on the polarizers.  I may get one of those Hoyas since I don't want to spend more than that right now.

Morning kids!  Have a safe holiday weekend!

Nice, peaceful photo, MTS. I like the subdued colors and calm-but-not-glassy surface.

My weekend started off a little chaotic, but then things got so beyond-my-control I was able to let it take its course and think about other things! Headed for Northwest Indiana this weekend; maybe I'll make it to the Dunes, if the weather holds up.

You are correct.  It is at the Wynn

I thought that tackiness looked familiar!

^That is awesome. I wonder how much it's worth.

Trying a new direction. West 4th last night during June's First Friday:

I was going through some photos of the AK Steel Ashland, Ky. works (formerly Armco Steel), and came across this. To the left is the Bellefonte Furnace, now demolished, and to the right is the Amanda Furnace.

Then...

Now...

full_3_1302.jpg

The Bellefonte opened in 1942 and produced 1,000/tons of steel per day, and had a 25 ft. hearth. It was later upgraded to produce 2,600/tons of steel per day, and the hearth was enlarged to 28.75 ft. It was the 96th blast furnace to be constructed in the region. The furnace was idled in 1996 and demolished in 2009.

In 1963, the Amanda Furnace was completed, and featured a 30 ft. hearth. It was enlarged in 1968 to 33 ft. It was once the largest pig-iron blast furnace in the world...

My dad was three years old when the hot strip was completed in 1953, only to see it close in 1992 when he was laid off -- that eliminated 930 jobs. The hot strip was THREE miles long. By 1995, the winter plant, cold strip mill, temper mills, pickling lines, annealing lines and machine shop all closed. The plant today is a fraction of the size it once was, although it has a new vacuum degassing unit and modifications to the slab caster that have added some jobs in recent years. It's main products include highly refined steel for the automotive industry and appliances -- and the company had some hard times when both industries declined during the recession.

In 1979 I spent the night at the tiny Amtrak station in Catlettsburg, changing between Amtrak's Cardinal and the now-deceased Hilltopper, looking for new mileage and scenery en route to Washington and then Baltimore. I slept on a baggage cart with my backpack for a pillow, because the station was brightly lit with flourescents and had been taken over by some teenage girls with a boombox. To the east I could see the sky brightly lit by a steel mill. Might that have been the mill I saw from a distance?

Against my will, my nephew, "friend" and I went to the Parade yesterday.

Neat! Usually I like parades because there's positive energy in the crowd, and it makes me feel good.

As much as I LOVE slightly oversaturated pictures :)

nice

I've been out of Ohio and back in NYC for a couple months and haven't posted a single photo on here yet, so here's the first; it's the view from the roof of my place in Astoria:

Alright, so here's the deal. A couple days ago, I was doing a 20-mile mountain bike ride when I literally stumbled upon three baby raccoons hanging out with each other! I was able to take photos of them for nearly twenty minutes. One of them even ran into my camera lens! They were friendly at first, but then kept trying to bite my toes. I don't think I've ever seen something so cute. Observe:

Bite your toes?  It is a cute little picture, but when you wake up foaming at the mouth, you'll know why!

^I already wake up foaming at the mouth! Thank you Kristen from Port Clinton...

child boo!

I guess it depends. DanB probably feels the same way at KKK and Tea Party rallies  :-D Just kidding Dan <3 wherever you are.

Is he expelled again? Dan's been banned more times than Uncle Tom's Cabin.

David, how I've missed you!

Where the hell have you been?

I took this while out to eat with my best friend. The lake definitely has a lot of beauty to offer :)

Naw. I bought my Toyota RAV4 in March 2006.

kayteeohh, that's a most pleasing view. I like the the way the composition and the colors work together, especially the splashes of red that accent an otherwise cool-color image. That would be a lovely photo to look at when winter turns everything icy, gray, and dull.

Looks like Quay 55 in Cleveland.

This is absolutely precious! Thanks for sharing the best photo on the entire forum!

Raccoons are nocturnal. Babies out in the open during the day with no mother present likely are orphaned. Ordinarily the only time you see ones that small is at night when their mother is teaching them to forage.

When you get between a mama racoon and her babies, you've got a fierce problem on your hands.

Great photo; unique skyline shot, with a variety of contrasting elements. There's iconic Cincinnati architecture backing up green space, with human activity in the foreground. Good eye!

Thanks Robert!

That's a really great, uncommon angle. Nice execution.

The NS/PPLX coal drag heading east under the Market Street Bridge in South Williamsport to deliver coal to PPL Montour in Washingtonville, PA.

DJ Orion, I'll bet that makes a nice echoing rumble when coal hoppers pass under that bridge. Empties going the other way probably would be louder. :-)

My offering for the day:

Oh wow!  Did that fit?
