Free lunchtime parking in downtown Toledo could be on its way out

 

Free lunchtime parking in downtown Toledo could be on gone in the near future.

 

It's a perk that's been around for three decades but city leaders say those coins could be put to good use.

But some downtown businesses have a different opinion.

 

"I definitely think that taking away the 11:00 to 2:00 [free] lunchtime parking is not a good idea and it will impact the restaurants especially," said Kim McKnight, Ye Olde Durty Bird manager.

 

City officials say the free parking has been around since 1986, but it's time for a change.

The Toledo Board of Education Tuesday sold Toledo’s historic former post office to ProMedica Health Systems, the latest in a string of purchases of downtown buildings by the regional healthcare giant.

 

It’s unclear what purpose ProMedica has in mind for the Jefferson Center — built in 1911 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972 as the Old Central Post Office. ProMedica spokesman Tausha Moore said in a statement the specific plans for the center still remain uncertain.

 

“We would propose to purchase the building in order to save this historic structure,” she said. “The building will qualify for historic tax credits, which would be a strong incentive for redevelopment.”

I have to laugh a bit about the Rust Belt renaissance stories...I've been hearing them since I was a wee child in the 1970s. Cleveland's been "back" how many times now? Detroit is on its second, if not third "renaissance", Toledo's on its third probably. Toledo has a some new restaurants and apartments downtown, but its hard to see what else - outside of those public sector investments like parks and arenas -- has really been made downtown so far. The public investments downtown -- and I include non-profit Promedica in that list-- have been enormous, but I really haven't seen much private investment to complement it. 

 

The downtown Edith (what was her name?) experienced was so different...multiple theaters with live entertainment, huge department stores that were the superstores of their day, scores of small retail and service businesses, street hawkers, lots of public transportation, you know...a city. A city like those in Europe or most of Asia...Toledo is a dyed-in-the-wool automobile town with little appetite for urban form. Toledo's downtown is visitor and event driven, which is why so many of those celebrated downtown businesses closed when Covid hit, because there were no events to bring customers downtown. The suburban branches were open, but downtown closed down.

After being stalled for several years, the city’s deal with Nasby LLC to redevelop the Nasby Building in downtown Toledo is poised to move forward.

 

An agreement in 2017 between the city and Nasby LLC stipulated that the latter would buy the vacant 119,000-square-foot building at 605 Madison Ave. for just $10. Part of the deal also required the city to acquire and include the properties at 611 and 617 Madison, a small parklike plot of land and a former bus station on the east side of Erie Street, the latter of which is owned by the Toledo Area Regional Transit Authority....

 

“This has been going on for so, so long,” said Councilman Rob Ludeman about the deal.

 

He also pointed out that the Nasby Building’s redevelopment would help open up the pathway to redevelopment of the Nicholas and Spitzer buildings, which occupy two of the other three corners at Huron Street and Madison Avenue and were and acquired last year by the Lucas County Land Bank.

The renovation of the historic former Toledo Central Post Office that was later used by TPS as the Jefferson Center and then purchased in 2019 by ProMedica has received state historic tax credits in the latest funding round:
