Winton Place to be renamed?

Area's many Wintons create an identity crisis

BY DAN HORN | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER

The bumper sticker on Bill and Julie Lonneman's car sums up their feelings about Winton Place, the Cincinnati neighborhood they've called home for 25 years. It features a big red heart sandwiched between the words "I" and "Winton Place." But while the Lonnemans love the rich history, diversity and character of their neighborhood, they are torn when it comes to its name. Bill wants to keep it. Julie wants to change it.

The rest of the neighborhood is just as divided.

"It's created some pretty strong feelings," Bill Lonneman said. "Everyone is talking about it." The debate started this year when some residents suggested changing the name to Spring Grove Village. Their goal is to distinguish the neighborhood from nearby Winton Hills, the Winton Terrace apartments and a half dozen other Wintons.

Residents voted on the proposed change via postcard a few weeks ago, but the final results won't be known until mid-December because of concerns that some residents didn't get ballots. The tally so far gives a slight edge - by about 20 votes - to those favoring a change.

The Winton Terrace Apartments are very dumpy looking buildings, it isn't hard to see why you wouldn't want to be assosiated with them, whoever lives inside. But Spring Grove Village sounds rediculous, simply Spring Grove would be much better.

Spring Grove Village sounds like a single subdivision... if they want to change their name, I'm sure they could think of something better than that

Since they are technically a neighborhood anyway, and not a village, I think they should drop the village part. It sounds like they're going for a fancy name. I guess I can't blame them since Winton Terrace has given Winton-everything a bad name. I vote for "Spring Grove Estates" :]

I don't know if its Winton Place or Winton Hills but one of them actually has zoning for agriculture. Probably the only place in the city like that.

There are many neighborhoods that have "Village" in them.  Most notable in Ohio is the German Village.

Hell, there is a Cincinnati neighborhood called FAY APARTMENTS.

Alas.

Spring Grove Estates sounds like a trailer park

It's a bit silly to change the name, but I understand the motive. As a general rule, I dislike the words Place and Center as names for places and centers.

You should ask Maximillian about those old farms in Winton Place. There should be a photo thread request form.

I guess you'd know :)

*gasp*

How about Hole in the Wall ?

Anyway, I posted some pics I took of the place a couple weeks ago.

I really like some of the areas there.

I think they do get a bad rap for the name.

i agree.  i have never driven through the area and automatically assumed it was all a hole.  by lookin at quimbobs pictures, there seem to be nice parts after all.  I would like to see the name changed but I dont really like Spring Grove Village.  I dont know, if the ppl of Winton Place want it, then I will support it.

Gah, ach, and ick.  Spring Grove Village sounds like the old folks' home that's your last home before Spring Grove Cemetery.  If they were changing it just to Spring Grove, I'd have a far less visceral reaction to this.  But even with a more kick-ass name, were I a WP-ite, I'd definitely vote against it.  There's just way too much history in Winton Place to change that name, to my mind.

But then, there's really only one name change I'd be in favor of - the sections of Over-the-Rhine that are north of Liberty?  I'd happily change the name back to The Northern Liberties.  Because OMFG, that rocks.

Isn't that basically the demographic of the area anyway?

Nah north of Liberty should just be called Way-Over-The-Rhine

Nah north of Liberty should just be called Way-Over-The-Rhine

LOL...nicely done...

Winton Place could be renamed Cemetary Corners.  Or just change the name of Winton Terrace apts to something else?

They could rename it Chester Park if they really wanted to go back to what used to be.

They should go with something edgy like "Q?" or "8<" or they could just work on sorting out the problems that they have with the neighboring Winton Terrace.  This is pretty similar to what North Avondale wanted (wants?) to do right now.

"Q?" or "8<" - absolutely hilarious!  That's truly brilliant...LOL...

Funniest damn thing I've read all week!

Winton Place gets new name

BY DAN HORN | [email protected]

December 13, 2006

CINCINNATI - You can still call Winton Place historic, diverse and a nice place to live.

Just don’t call it Winton Place.

The Cincinnati neighborhood’s community council voted Tuesday to change its name to Spring Grove Village after at least 140 years with the old name.

The decision came after council members certified a November election in which residents voted via postcard on whether to adopt the new name or keep the old one. The tally was 158-129.

“This is a very special place,” said Isaac Greene, the community council president and a supporter of the new name. “We wanted a name that reflects that.”

Greene and others who backed the change say the name Spring Grove Village distinguishes the neighborhood from nearby Winton Hills, the Winton Terrace apartments and several other locations that bear the Winton name.

Cincinnati Councilman Chris Monzel, a neighborhood resident, compared the name change to the kind of “re-branding” that companies do with old products. He said the goal here is the same: Improve the neighborhood’s image and attract more customers, which in this case means prospective home buyers.

But the old name didn’t go down without a fight.

Several residents argued loudly against it and some complained that the November vote should not be accepted because only a fraction of the neighborhood’s 2,600 residents cast ballots. They noted that residents living in apartments did not receive postcards because they were considered transient.

“I’m still not satisfied that the majority has been heard,” said Mary-Jane Newborn, a community council member opposed to the change.

Monzel announced the new name at City Council’s meeting on Wednesday.

Most wished the neighborhood well, but not everyone was impressed.

Councilman Jim Tarbell said Spring Grove Village sounded “like a retirement home.”

Monzel said the new name plays on one of the neighborhood’s greatest assets – the historic Spring Grove Cemetery.

The area was known simply as Spring Grove in the early 1800s, but it became Winton Place in 1865 when developers named it for pioneer and tavern owner Matthew Winton. The city annexed it in 1903.

The community council must now certify the new name with the city of Cincinnati and the state of Ohio, but that should happen within weeks. New signs at the borders could take months.

But getting everyone to use the new name could take more time.

“It doesn’t happen overnight,” Newborn said. “I’m just going to call it Winton Place, because that’s what it is to me.”

Congratulations on your new terrible name.

They could have called it Hannaford, in honor of one of their greatest residents.

I said that it sounded like a trailer park... but retirement home is close too
