During Mike White's administration in 1990, there was a serious thinning of the urban forest at Rockefeller Park to pull out diseased specimens and uncrowd healthy young saplings.  Once numerous trees were marked for removal, some environmental activists came in and marked every single tree for removal using identical markings hoping none would be removed.

This resulted in the city having to conduct another expensive repeat tree inventory with subsequent removal of only the sick trees. I don't have any recollection that many were replaced.  Reforestation of Rockefeller Park is surely in order today.

Wonderful! Cleveland has a relatively large ethnic Russian population, myself included. It's more than time for us to have a beautiful garden. If anyone else wants more information, or to make a donation... http://www.russianculturalgarden.com/

Spacibo! :-)

I can't wait to show the Russian and Ukrainian Cultural Gardens to my fiance and her son. They are ethnic Russians living in Ukraine... until May 8th.

Centennial Peace Plaza has broken ground this past week and the Ethiopian painted wall is nearing completion, but not the arches yet.

The Phase One dedication of the Ethiopian Cultural Garden will be Saturday, August 24, from 1-3 p.m. Afterward, there will be a dedication reception at Empress Taytu, the Ethiopian restaurant at 6125 St. Clair Ave., Cleveland.

Famicos Foundation Seeks Cleveland Cultural Gardens Welcome Center

...Famicos acquired the property from the old Glenville Redevelopment Corporation and is trying to raise $1.6 million to rehabilitate it, Shefton says. So far, the foundation is applying for  federal and state historic tax credits.

This project is very exciting, hopefully Famicos can reach their goal. Maybe this project can help tie into the E105th corridor projects as well.

I wasn't the person that gave the down vote, but their page on the cultural gardens website gives an explanation of how the design is supposed to relate to the African-American experience.

Welcome Mexico to the Cultural Gardens:

When is the last time I-71 turned a profit?

^ good news to hear from that freshwater blog link:

The Mexican American population represents the second largest Spanish-speaking community in the Cleveland metropolitan area, says Comite Mexicano de Cleveland executive director Eduardo Rodriguez, second only to the city’s Puerto Rican population.

...

Additionally, he says the Mexican American population is growing in Cleveland, with people moving from places like Texas, Chicago, and Los Angeles. “This is a new generation and they’ve started to look at new cities,” he says. “This is a nice city to start in after college and it’s affordable—and they know it.”

That's great about the Cultural Garden, I'm surprised there wasn't one. Lorain is listed as the city in Ohio that has the largest percentage of Mexican population with Painsville second. It makes sense that Cleveland's would be growing more and more. The  second generation has a lot of nurses and teachers, and Cleveland pays pretty well for both.

Edited by metrocity

Anyone know the current numbers of Mexicans and Puerto Ricans in CLE and Metro Cleveland (5- or 7-counties)? After Maria, CLE got a big bump from Puerto Rico, but I know some have since returned to PR.

this is an article from a couple of years ago (I desperately tried to find the 2020 info but, as usual, got lost in the Byzantine maze of the census site), which states that Lorain and Painesville have the largest percentages of Hispanics. Obviously in sheer numbers Lorain has more because it's much larger, but as I had thought it's mostly Puerto Rican (likewise Cleveland, I think); while Painesville is mainly Mexican (according to one report I had read, they're 80% of the Hispanic pop.).  Also, I did see somewhere that 2020's Hispanic pop. of P'ville is now over 26%.

"Scroll below to share of Hispanic population for every city and county in Ohio, led by Lorain at 28.3 percent (mostly with ties to Puerto Rico) and Painesville at 24.3 percent (mostly with ties to Mexico)."

I am unable to find an image of site-plans or elevation drawings for the Mexican Garden, only images of the celebration for it.

Anyone got a line on this?  The Cultural Gardens website doesn't offer any help on this.  In fact what's offered for the Lebanese garden is quite poor, although at least there's something there for that one.  The website may be woefully underfunded, but it's really outdated in many ways too.

Walking around the cultural gardens on one world day it was interesting seeing all the plans for expanded or new gardens. Granted many of these have (probably) been trying to gather funds for a long time, and some of these may never happen, but I'm pulling for all of them. The cultural gardens are such an underappreciated and unique asset for Cleveland!

I didn't even know we had a British and French cultural garden, nor did I know so many were trying to expand.

Several of the cultural gardens, like the French, for example, are currently basically just allocated empty plots of land waiting for something to be done with them. I wouldn't have known several of them were there if it weren't for the people there for one world day and the (I think temporary) signage. I would absolutely love for all of these to be filled out, as I'm sure the immigrant communities they represent would as well, just need to find the funds. Imagine how nice it would be if every garden was as nice as the Hungarian, Italian, or Hebrew gardens to name a few!

Does the city have a program or fund available for these cultural gardens to utilize?

I don't believe there is much of an ongoing pot of money from the city for the cultural gardens. The Cleveland Cultural Gardens Foundation does receive some public funds though. From there 2022 report.

Also, here's a useful list of gardens including which ones were in development as of last year. After walking by Sunday, I think the Pakistani garden can drop its asterisk. It looks great!

I went Sunday. I had visitors from Michigan and Massachusetts specifically here for the event. It was their first time and they said their cities had nothing like it. They loved it.

What l noticed was the general improvement year over year over year. More people, more costumes, more music and food. And of course more gardens. I think the gardens are another Cleveland gem that has been underappreciated. It's great to see the increased interest.

The unfortunate part about this section of MLK Blvd is it's connection to 90. If this wasn't such a heavily trafficked area especially for highway traffic I would love to see it closed and be pedestrian only/bike only at least on weekends.

A weekly Cultural farmers market would be fantastic here. This section of MLK combined with the same stretch of East Blvd creates one of the most beautiful sections of the city.

landscaped medians on the road and a 25 mph limit would help

Seems like some of those groups should do a better job of getting the word out, and reaching out to the governments of those countries to donate money as well, besides the local support.

Should replace the asphalt with brick.  That would slow folks down.

Well, it's not as bad as it was.  Several years ago, they did make some modifications to calm the traffic.  It was changed to one lane in each direction and the speed limit was reduced.

If the Cultural Gardens were on the west side they would've have 50 studies done and millions of dollars of investment already. The current "path" is a 4 foot sidewalk that is basically unusable. Time for CLE and Metroparks to step up and get a real multi-purpose path running straight to Uni Circle from the lake.

The West side is treated much better than the East side, from streetscape projects, to historical preservation and restoration all the way to quality of new housing projects.

It's just the harsh reality in this city. So many neighborhoods and sections should've been further ahead as far as redevelopment and reinvigoration.
