^ They want you to pay for a zoo membership to receive it.  It's one of the perks they offer, I guess.  Seems like they'll spend the money to make money.

Maybe someone should tell them that people who get the newletter and learn more about the zoo and its activities and mission might be more likely to become members or to pay admissions fees.

Saw this in a presser from the Cleveland Foundation:

Cleveland  Zoological Society ($500,000): A significant portion of the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo will be transformed as part of the African Elephant Crossing, a project that will help visitors understand the complexity involved when people and animals share resources. The African Village at the center of the exhibit will illustrate the role of elephants in African culture, and showcase green technology and alternative energy as well.

I got excited because I thought this would go towards moving the Schreckengost installations.  Hopefully they're raising the money to keep them.

I saw on the Fox 8 news that contractors are now removing the Schreckengost elephant and mammoth for reinstallation elsewhere.  It's excellent news that they will be preserved.  :-D

Cleveland Zoo's Snowball the polar bear found dead

By John C. Kuehner

October 24, 2008, 11:20PM

Snowball, the second-oldest polar bear in captivity in North America, died unexpectedly Friday morning at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.

The lover of mackerel -- known as the queen of her three-bear community -- was 37.

"She was the boss lady of the exhibit," said Sue Allen, spokeswoman for the zoo. "If she wanted to bask in one part of the exhibit and another bear was there, they got up and let her."

http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2008/10/zoos_snowball_the_polar_bear_f.html

This is sad.

But I could not help but laugh thinking how the tone of the article would change if instead of a bear, this were a person.

Cleveland, OH - For the first time ever, six young Mexican wolves are now on the prowl at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.

The 3-year-old sisters are actively exploring their new surroundings and interacting well with one another, having arrived at the Zoo earlier this month from the Wild Canid Survival and Research Center near St. Louis. The pack-mates – named “Catori,” “Sarita,” “Una,” “Aprecia,” “Nancita” and “Mitzi” -- are now on exhibit from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily at the Zoo’s Wolf Wilderness...

Cleveland Zoo is a popular destination in a down economy

CLEVELAND — Moms and dads pushed strollers. Couples sauntered hand in hand, baring winter-white skin in the June sun.

Kids ran.

And gaggles of teenagers celebrated the almost-end of a school year.

Everywhere they pointed, took pictures and chattered over the animals.

"There's one!" "Look!" "C'mere!"

That was Max Stein and Sam Stask, 3½-year-old cousins from Painesville and Aurora, as they galloped around Monkey Island. But it could have been any of thousands Saturday at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.

On a first date or family outing, Clevelanders have flocked to the zoo this year, bumping attendance up 9.4 percent from the same five-month period last year...

Traffic Jammed Because Of Zoo

06-16-2009 3:54 AM

(Cleveland, OH) -- Free admission to the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo combined with nice weather, road construction, and the recession caused quite a traffic jam yesterday. Drivers say they say in traffic for anywhere between 45 minutes to two hours trying to get to the zoo. The zoo has always offered free admission on Mondays to Cuyahoga County and Hinckley Township residents on Monday. The Fulton Road Bridge is closed for construction and so zoo officials had to reroute some traffic to help ease the congestion. There were almost 21-thousand people who visited the zoo yesterday.

RELEASE DATE: January 20, 2010

Cleveland Metroparks Zoo Sees Strong Attendance in 2009

Attendance at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo remained strong in 2009 with nearly 1.2 million visitors.

A final tally showed 1,195,280 people came through the Zoo gates in 2009, surpassing the projected attendance of 1.15 million.

The busiest day of the year was Monday, July 6, with 21,732 visitors. Monday, July 20, came in a close second at 21,576. (Zoo admission is free on Mondays for residents of Cuyahoga County and Hinckley Township.)

The 2009 attendance marks the 17th straight year attendance has topped 1 million. The prior year, 2008, total attendance was 1,208,261.

"We're very grateful that people continue to see the value in their Zoo," said Zoo Director Steve Taylor. "Whether it's winter or summer, there's always plenty to see and do at the Zoo. And it's always affordable."

The Zoo's summertime attraction DINOSAURS! drew a record 444,820 visitors in its fourth Cleveland appearance since 2003. Expect to see a new crew of robotic prehistoric beasts at the Zoo in 2010, as well as other popular attractions and a "stinky" new exhibit called The Scoop on Poop.

Cleveland Metroparks Zoo is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Discounted winter admission through March 31 is just $7 per person, $5 for kids ages 2 to 11 and free for children under 2 and Zoo members. Parking is free. Located at 3900 Wildlife Way, the Zoo is easily accessible from Interstates 71, 77, 90 and 480.

Zoos in Akron, Cleveland are roaring despite a bearish economy

By James Ewinger

January 23, 2010, 4:00AM

Zoos in Cleveland and Akron had healthy attendance records last year in spite of, or possibly because of, the stumbling economy.

Cleveland Metroparks Zoo saw 1.19 million visitors in 2009 -- the 17th year in a row that the turnstiles welcomed more than a million people.

The Akron Zoo had more than 316,000 visitors last year, one of its best years ever. The peak year was in 2008 when its jellyfish exhibit opened, drawing a crowd of close to 329,000.

Planners consider adding train, more polar bears to busy Cleveland Metroparks Zoo

By James Ewinger

May 11, 2010, 6:56AM

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Imagine taking a train from the parking lot of an expanded Cleveland Metroparks Zoo that might include a larger polar bear habitat.

And imagine the same train whisking you around the zoo's campus instead of pedestrians and the cumbersome trams competing for the same paved ways.

These are some of the ideas being discussed as zoo officials and hired planners start to formulate a strategic plan for the next 10 years.

The 183-acre zoo's first plan came together in 1993 after the RainForest exhibit opened. Several years ago, another plan looked forward at possible new exhibits that ultimately included the Elephant Crossing, to be completed next year.

Elephants will return in May to expanded home at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cleveland Metroparks Zoo Director Steve Taylor says it was a rare day over the last two years when someone didn't ask how soon the elephants were coming back.

Now he has an answer: Next May.

And the elephants will return to brand new digs, four times the size of their old home.

The $25 million African Elephant Crossing is a mass of concrete, steel and construction equipment today, but it is shaping up to be a national model of modern elephant habitat.

Elephants, attendance highlight 2011 for Cleveland Metroparks Zoo

CLEVELAND -- Cleveland Metroparks Zoo is on track to end the year with more than 1.3 million visitors for the fourth time in its history, an increase of 10 percent over 2010, despite the continuing recession and a Northeast Ohio record of more than 62 inches of rain.

The May grand opening of the $25 million African Elephant Crossing exhibit, which marked the return of elephants to the Zoo after a two year absence, was a contributing factor.

"The connection that Clevelanders have to our elephants and our Zoo, cannot be overstated," said Zoo Director Steve Taylor. "We've had consistent attendance of over a million visitors a year now for 19 years, but to top 1.3 million is something special."

The Zoo's yearly attendance record was set in 1993 when 1.4 million people visited following the November 1992 opening of The RainForest.

Several other attendance records were set this year however, including best June ever at 252,611, best November at 52,565, best single day (24,976), best Mother's Day (16,303) and best Thanksgiving Day (9,335).

400-pound Aldabra tortoise dies at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo

Jen Steer, newsnet5.com. 04/11/2012

CLEVELAND - Tim the tortoise, one of the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo’s oldest residents, passed away on Tuesday.

The male Aldabra tortoise was more than 100 years old when an animal-keeper found him unresponsive in his winter quarters, the zoo said in a news release on Wednesday. The zoo’s staff will conduct an animal autopsy, or necropsy, to determine Tim’s cause of death.

Metroparks Zoo to get new carousel

The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo is going retro in a colorful way, with plans for a brand-new, from the ground up, old-fashioned carousel, made right here in a Ohio.

The Metroparks commissioners on Thursday approved the carousel project, which is expected to open in 2014 and cost about $2 million. That pricetag is small by the standards of capital projects at the zoo. The RainForest, which just turned 20 years old, cost $30 million. The more recent African Elephant Crossing cost $25 million.

The carousel, however, will cost the park system nothing.

It will be the first project completely underwritten by the Cleveland Zoological Society, a separate, private-nonprofit that exists to support the zoo and aid in fundraising

My sister in law is one of the "announcers" for the elephant crossing.  It's been a really popular attraction, and the elephants are Ardyn's favorite, except maybe now for the monkeys in the Rainforest.  Yes, Monkey Island is a few larger monkeys and no longer a colony, and the Rainforest has reprised its role when springtime comes around.  We walked up on quite the "display" Friday.

Leila did tell me than when the elephants are in winter quarters, they're not quite as unstimulated as they may seem.  I suggested some TVs in their enclosure, but she says more is going on.

This would add another tourist attraction to the city of Cleveland... Hope it all works out:

Cleveland Metroparks considering zip line for the zoo

By James Ewinger, The Plain Dealer

on March 27, 2014 at 2:22 PM, updated March 27, 2014 at 2:59 PM

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland Metroparks system has a plan that will have park visitors walking on air.

Metroparks Chief Operating Officer Joe Roszak and Zoo Director Chris Kuhar said a high-rope course would fit well at the Chalet in the Mill Stream Reservation, and a zip line could serve the Metroparks Zoo, which is inside the Brookside Reservation.

The rope course is a sort of aerial walkway that would allow park users to tour forest canopy, coming back to Earth by riding a zip line.

The zip line is a cable, or series of cables, from which a person is suspended. Some have braking systems while others go down and then curve up slightly, allowing gravity to stop forward motion. It would carry visitors from one point to another on the grounds of the zoo.

I ways figured a hillside tram sort of like what (the city of) Pittsburgh has. Zip lines are great, but they tend to go downhill and you have to be in decent shape to ride one.

Anyone else see the new world class Signage that's been installed on Pearl and Fulton Parkway?  Pretty snazzy!

Cleveland Metroparks Zoo's new carousel makes public debut today

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Children's joyous shrieks and cheers took the place of a trumpet fanfare this morning when the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo's new carousel took the first members of the public for a ride.

They were borne of the backs of 64 exotic creatures.

If you weren't able to make it today, fear not. The folks at the Carousel Works in Mansfield assure that their hand-crafted wonder should be good for a century, so there's plenty of time to hitch a ride.

The carousel is called the Circle of Wildlife Carousel because the menagerie represents animals in the collections of the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, divided by habitat.

Cleveland Metroparks Zoo breaks ground on new tiger exhibit

September 24, 2015

By CRAIN'S CLEVELAND BUSINESS

The tigers at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo will be in their new home next summer.

The zoo on Thursday, Sept. 24, officially broke ground on Tiger Passage, a new home for its two Amur (Siberian) tigers.

Zoo officials said in a news release that the $4.1 million exhibit will occupy the same footprint as the previous tiger exhibit, but will expand outward “to increase the size and complexity of the space available to the tigers.” As a result of better use of space, the new exhibit will be five times the size of the old moated, grotto-style exhibits.

The Cleveland Zoological Society has committed $2.5 million to the exhibit's cost.

What is the "Zoo Zipline"?  is that a ride for kids or it something bigger like an aerial ride like at amusement parks? San Diego Zoo has an aerial ride on cables. Not sure what those are officially called.

ehhhh. I'd rather see a more zoo-focused investment. I wonder if it will be free once you're in the zoo or if they'll charge for it. If they charge for it, maybe it will help raise funds for more animal-related stuff.
