That's cool. Had no idea what a "gondola-style (two seater) zip line" was, but found a photo about this here:  https://www.clevescene.com/scene-and-heard/archives/2020/12/17/cleveland-metroparks-zoo-to-construct-zip-line-in-2021.

Nice!  Neat to see the aerial map and video.  My description was taken purely from conversations with the construction crew.  Like any good UOers, when I see foundation being poured, I make sure to start asking the workers questions.  The article states a May 2021 completion; the construction workers I spoke to said they think July 2021.

Side note: this historic building used to be in University Circle at Wade Oval...built in the 1880s at the original Zoo location and relocated in the 1970s to its current location.  Hopefully it will get some additional appreciation due to its proximity with the new tandem zipline

^Whoa, it’s like our indoor botanical gardens except on steroids and with monkeys.

This looks incredible!

Nice! Reminds me a little of Monkey Jungle in Miami.

My hovercraft is full of eels

This is great news for visitors but it's even greater news for the animals.

Bear necessities: Zoo sets July construction start for Bear Hollow

Quote

The zoo on Thursday, June 16, announced a project called Bear Hollow that will "significantly improve and expand the tropical bear habitats in Wilderness Trek."

The four new habitats, opening in early summer 2023, "will be nearly triple the size of the former spaces and enhance guest viewing and animal care efforts with Andean and sloth bears," the zoo said in a news release.

Construction on Bear Hollow will start in July. The zoo said the approximately $7.7 million project is supported by $3.5 million from the Cleveland Zoological Society.

I’m at the zoo today and was pleasantly surprised to see that the dumpy machine shop on Wildlife Way near the entrance and between the parking lots was being demolished. Anyone know if that land will be donated to the zoo / Metroparks?

From the Metroparks Board Meeting 11/18/21:

(f) Ratification of Purchase Agreement and Authorization to Enter into an Amendment of the Purchase Agreement for the Acquisition of Permanent Parcel Number 014-24-012 Located in Cleveland, Ohio (± 0.9 acres) (Originating Sources: Brian M. Zimmerman, Chief Executive Officer/Rosalina M. Fini, Chief Legal & Ethics Officer/Kyle G. Baker, Director of Real Estate & Senior Assistant Legal Counsel/Stephanie A. Kutsko, Real Estate Manager)

Cleveland Metroparks has the opportunity to acquire a ± 0.9-acre inholding property located at 3700 Wildlife Way in the City of Cleveland known as Permanent Parcel Number 014-24-012 (the “Property”) surrounded by Cleveland Metroparks Zoo (reference map, page 79 ). The Property offers an opportunity for Cleveland Metroparks Zoo (“Zoo”) expansion and was identified in the 2017 Brookside Reservation & Cleveland Metroparks Zoo Master Plan as a private inholding and recommended maintaining contact with the owner for future acquisition.

After negotiations the owner of the Property has agreed to sell the Property to Cleveland Metroparks for $1,100,000. The Cleveland Zoological Society has graciously agreed to contribute $650,000 towards the acquisition with Cleveland Metroparks covering the remaining $450,000.

Given the long-time interest in the Property and the willingness of the owner of the Property to relocate its business, the purchase agreement was previously executed to ensure the Property would be preserved in perpetuity as a part of the Zoo. The Property is anticipated to transfer to Cleveland Metroparks on December 29, 2021. The owner of the Property would like to amend the purchase agreement to allow a lease-back option for a five-month term that would extend to May 31, 2022. The owner of the Property will be responsible for a nominal monthly rent ($100/month), real estate taxes, insurance, and all other responsibilities associated with the Property during the lease. This lease will allow the owner of the Property sufficient time to relocate their machinery and associated business, while allowing Cleveland Metroparks ample time to prepare for future demolition of the structures and restoration of the Property to integrate it into the Zoo.

It sounds like there needs to be some soil remediation done, from the 3/15/23 Metroparks Board Meeting:

Quote

After acquisition of the Property, the Brownfield Remediation Program (“Program”) administered by the Ohio Department of Development became available and offered to provide funds for assessment and remediation of brownfield sites, including building demolition. On February 17, 2022 (pursuant to Board Resolution No. 22-02-019), Cleveland Metroparks applied to the Program for funds to demolish the structure on the Property, including an asbestos survey and necessary abatement. The structure is in fair and operable condition but has no useful purpose as part of Cleveland Metroparks Zoo and must be demolished to fully remediate the underlying soils. Cleveland Metroparks successfully obtained funding through the Program.

That was an aluminum foundry, I used to sell them metal.   The need for some soil remediation is pretty much automatic.

CLEVELAND METROPARKS ZOO OPENS TRANSFORMATIVE SUSIE’S BEAR HOLLOW HABITAT

Posted: August 25, 2023

Susie’s Bear Hollow, Cleveland Metroparks Zoo’s new state-of-the art tropical bear habitat, is now open. The re-imagined immersive space located in the Zoo’s Wilderness Trek destination is home to the zoo’s male Andean bear and male and female sloth bears.

Bear Hollow includes significantly larger and more complex habitats for the animals. The four new habitats triple the size of the former 60-year-old space and incorporate features that encourage bears’ natural behaviors including climbing structures, elevated resting areas and dig pits. Enhancements behind-the-scenes will also include multi-level resting areas to better support nesting bears.

...

New glass viewing opportunities allow guests to get nose-to-nose with the bears and an immersive treehouse provides guests with nearly 360-degree views of the habitats. Centered in the treehouse is a one-of-a-kind climbing structure that allows children to climb up like the bears and offers unique viewing into the habitats below. A separate viewing area allows for up-close views of animal care and veterinary staff as they conduct training and health and husbandry monitoring of the bears.

September 9 will be the last day to visit the RainForest with construction on the new Primate Forest set to break ground on September 10. It's not clear from the press release if it will reopen in some capacity while construction continues, but the new exhibits wont open until 2026.

Cleveland Metroparks Zoo Prepares for Primate Forest Transformation

Posted: August 15, 2024

In preparation for the start of construction on the Zoo’s new Primate Forest destination, Cleveland Metroparks Zoo today announced the upcoming closure of The RainForest. During the temporary closure, many of the spaces within the existing RainForest will be refreshed and remodeled as they are integrated into the Primate Forest to enhance the guest experience and elevate animal wellbeing.

The RainForest has been an iconic destination for more than 30 years, first opening in November 1992. When The RainForest opened, it was recognized as one of the largest and most sophisticated of its kind in the world, featuring more than 600 animals representing 118 different species and more than 7,000 live plants, trees and flowers of 360 varieties.

The RainForest has been home to popular species including Bornean orangutan, small-clawed otters, clouded leopard, sloths, anteaters, and a variety of amphibians and reptiles. Among the building’s defining attractions is the iconic 40-foot-tall geodesic dome, which was replaced in 2021 as an initial phase of the significant capital improvements to come. Now, this decades-old landmark will undergo renovation and evolve to meet the needs of the future.
