I wonder what the attendance will be roughly?  Maybe I'll bring a group of people.

  • Greater Cleveland Sports Commission delivers another major event for the city. Sounds like this could be a big draw and and a very cool event that'll provide international exposure.    Pan-A

They got the wrong CSU! This is to try to gain support for a CSU football team. Not really though :(

Cleveland to host national rowing championship

The Greater Cleveland Sports Commission has done it again.

The group, which attracts sporting events to and creates them for the region, has partnered with USRowing and the Cleveland Rowing Foundation to create a national championship rowing competition.

The inaugural edition of the USRowing Masters Head Race National Championship will take place next Sept. 16 on the Cuyahoga River; the groups announced the event on Tuesday night at a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the $3 million Rivergate Park on the Columbus Road peninsula in the Flats.

It would be nice for the event to grow and to stay in Cleveland!

Probably best to merge the thread I started.

^Hey, that'd be great. Where would they play, Browns Stadium?  May is not very far away---so if it is only a rumor--yet true--it should made official soon.....

im hearing this is true from a really reliable source as well.  THe only place that could handle that type of event would be Cleveland Browns Stadium.  Would be great.  I wish we could get an MLS team, but i wouldnt care if the stadium was in macedonia.  I would want it on the near west side.

I have a spot waiting for them on the near east side/CSU area. A surface lot, wedged between two gorgeous buildings that would frame the best, most intimate stadium in MLS. I'd say more, but then you would steal my idea and get rich lol.

Division 1 wrestling championships coming to Cleveland in 2018

The National Collegiate Athletic Association will bring three championship events to Greater Cleveland in 2017 and 2018, the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission announced Wednesday.

Hardly knew they existed. Oh well.

Lingerie football team Cleveland Crush bolting for Toledo

CLEVELAND - Cleveland is losing a football team but this time it’s a lingerie-clad group.

The Cleveland Crush, a member of the Legends Football League that plays at Quicken Loans Arena, is moving to Toledo.

They will play their games for the upcoming 2014 season at the Huntington Center.

Au revior. No long goodbyes here

I thought they stopped wearing lingerie

So they were playing nekid?

I couldn't imagine a creepier audience going to one of their games.

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

There were plans to make it a legit women's league.  The lingerie was a gimmick to gain media attention at the start and, at some point, they would wear regular jerseys as the league became established.

Nothing establishes legitimacy in sports like playing in lacy undergarments. I believe that's what the Jets plan for next year.

Does anybody have any results from the Don King boxing match at the Wolstein Center the other day?

I can not find anything on it in the news.

Was this a successful event? Was it well supported?

Web.com Tour coming to Lakewood Country Club June 5-8

CLEVELAND - Professional golf is coming to Cleveland this summer.  The Web.com Tour will bring the Cleveland Open to Lakewood Country Club in Westlake June 5-8.

Executive Director of the Cleveland Open Ben Cooke said this tournament will have a huge impact on the local community.

“I think for Cleveland it means a number of things.  In terms of economic impact we’re talking about six to eight million dollars to the community and huge charitable donations to the charitable partners,” Cooke said.

The Cleveland Open will feature 156 golfers competing over 72 holes of stroke play for a purse of $600,000. All four rounds of the tournament will be televised on the Golf Channel. Cooke said this will put the Northeast Ohio on a world stage.

"It gives us a chance to tell Cleveland's story to a much wider audience particularly the golf channel audience,” Cooke said. “It's 192 countries and I think we are going to be able to do something’s during the broadcast to show what a great city this is and the great things that have been happening here recently."

The Cleveland Open will be hosted and organized by the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission, partnering with Milestone Sports Management of Westlake.

“We really are becoming one of the top cities in this country for the hosting of major events and this will certainly rise to the top of this list,” said David Gilbert, President and CEO of the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission.

The CLEVELAND open at LAKEWOOD country club in WESTLAKE.  WTF?

Really?  You don't consider Lakewood to be part of Greater Cleveland?  Weren't the Cavaliers from Cleveland when they played in Richfield?

The Giants and the Jets play in a different state!!

^^got me thinking...is there a golf course in Cleveland proper?

Little Met is technically in the city isn't it?

Not a knock on the Cleveland open...just thought it is odd that it is not in Cle but at Lakewood CC which is NOT in Lakewood but in Westlake.

Other than some metroparks courses, I can't think of any courses in Cle proper.

Here's an idea Cleveland (and GCSC) could mimic:

As a shout out to Cleveland, who only has college football at the NCAA D3 level...and doesn't attempt to regain/engage civic interest.

As I type this right now, Minneapolis is hosting 35K+ local fans watching their local NCAA football teams at Target Field...featuring two D3 schools of St. Thomas vs St. Johns.

http://www.startribune.com/34-000-tickets-already-sold-for-st-thomas-st-john-s-football-game-at-target-field/446623873/

This is reminiscent of Cleveland's "Big Four" football days when they would use the Cleveland Indians' League Park to host college football games.  For example, here is a photo of (Case) Western Reserve vs Baldwin Wallace (where Lee Tressel coached) in 1935:

https://books.google.com/books?id=RFvzem5opK0C&pg=PT129&lpg=PT129&dq=john+carroll+%22western+reserve%22+1935+football+league+park&source=bl&ots=gXwurarrWC&sig=yJq7U2NEwWIMF9_rtJL-nP0JKyg&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwi87NvfkrzWAhVEMGMKHdDmCvYQ6AEIQTAF#v=onepage&q=john%20carroll%20%22western%20reserve%22%201935%20football%20league%20park&f=false

NEO has three teams ranked in the Top 25 at NCAA D3 (out of 249 teams), and there is never any local promotion or pride.

# 2 Mount Union

# 9 John Carroll

#18 Case Western Reserve

Or at the very least, Cleveland could host local MAC schools, such as Akron or Kent State, who only average 10K fans a game at home.

Interesting stuff...

GCSC quietly continues to host national events.

This weekend and next weekend are the NCAA DI and DIII Wrestling Championships, held at Public Auditorium and Quicken Loans Arena:

The MAC basketball men's and women's tournaments are currently going on downtown today through saturday.

GCSC has done an amazing job over the last few years filling up Downtown hotels and restaurants throughout the winter months on weekends with a variety of amateur sporting competitions.

Could be why the Hilton does so well during winter months...

EDIT: btw, we have a super cool looking venue for various media outlet photos:

I love walking around and talking to people during these kind of events. All of the feedback I've gotten, sans the weather, has been excellent

I never knew there were so many fans of college wrestling.

Happened to be on the red line this morning around 9:30 coming in from the west side. Lots of wrestling folks on board. Penn State is the best team so it makes sense, but wow, there are almost as many Penn State fans as all the other schools put together.
