February 3, 200817 yr Buckeye Chuck says spring is in the air Saturday, February 2, 2008 - 4:37 PM By Jill Riepenhoff, THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH Darn that rodent from Gobbler’s Knob. Today he predicted more winter. But Ohio’s Buckeye Chuck called for an early spring. So what’s a weather watcher to do with conflicting forecasts from our hibernating friends from Punxsutawney, Pa. and Marion, Ohio? Go with Phil, a Dispatch analysis of weather data shows. In the past 10 years, the woodchuck from the state next door has accurately predicted the forecast 80 percent of the time. Chuck posts a 60-percent accuracy rate. But don’t cast aside Chuck for his older, more famous kin. Chuck’s on a roll. His forecast has been correct the past six years. The Dispatch put their predictions to the test, tracking their forecasts in 1998-2007. More at www.dispatch.com

My flipping of the coin is as accurate as that cute little buck-toothed rodent's meteorological capabilities. But it's the only time of the year the groundhog isn't a pest (and some would dispute that too!).
