You know i was unaware of that until I listened to the Kobe recording, where air control is giving the pilot highway directions, so strange.

My grandfather took flight lessons with his GI Bill in the late 1940s but never became commercial pilot.  He told me that you had to follow *railroads* since there weren't highways yet, and memorize church steeples.  One of his tests was to fly from Cincinnati to Indianapolis to Dayton and back.  He had to land at those airports and get something stamped to prove he was there or maybe somebody called.  He got lost in Indiana and landed in a farmer's field and walked to the house to ask them where he was.

Yesterday's NBA trade deadline came and went without any big shake-up trades.  The biggest trade of the day was swap of former high 1st-round picks between the two worst teams in the West.  Second-to-last Minnesota traded former #1 overall pick Andrew Wiggins plus a future 1st-round pick to last-place Golden State for former #2 overall pick D'Angelo Russell.

Golden State gets the former #1 pick from 2014 - who has had an okay but underwhelming career in Minnesota - plus a lightly protected first-round pick for Russell, who was on an expiring contract.

Minnesota gets a quality player in Russell to pair with Karl-Anthony Towns in the hopes that this pairing will be better than the KAT-Wiggins pairing.  Russell has had a very odd NBA career after his one season at Ohio State.  Russell was originally drafted in 2015 by the Lakers.  Then he was traded to Brooklyn to clear the way for LeBron and the Unibrow.  Then he was an All-Star last season for Brooklyn - only to be traded again, this time to Golden State for Kevin Durant.  Despite having a quality NBA career, this is Russell's fourth team in five seasons(!)

Sources: NBA mulls moving games due to coronavirus

As the NBA's board of governors prepares to confer with the commissioner's office Wednesday in a critical conference call on the coronavirus crisis, one scenario introduced into the league's conversation involves moving some games to NBA cities that have yet to suffer outbreaks, league sources told ESPN.

If the virus clusters and forces a team out of its city and arena for a period of time, there has been discussion about moving games to the away opponent's arena if that city hasn't suffered an outbreak -- or even moving games to neutral cities and sites, league sources told ESPN.

The NBA is discussing a number of possibilities -- including eliminating fans from buildings for games or, more drastically, suspending game operations for a period of time -- but sources said decisions on those options remain complicated by the fact that there has been a limited amount of public testing for the coronavirus in the United States.  There is no full understanding of how widespread and debilitating the virus could become in the country.

NBA suspends season due to coronavirus

The NBA announced that it has suspended its season until further notice after the completion of Wednesday night's games after a member of the Utah Jazz has preliminarily tested positive for the coronavirus.

Remember...Trump said this was just a Democrat "hoax"

In 1994 the MLB season simply...ended.  No playoffs, no world series.

But it's just the flu bro..

Rudy Gobert - who tested positive and two days ago wiped every microphone and recorder after leaving a press gaggle - should face all penalties applicable to him under the law (if any).

I agree with this.  It was irresponsible...however, the MEDIA MEMBERS IMPACTED by his carelessness are all brushing it off and stating it has come from a place of love and not mocking the virus....which i think is them just kissing his butt so he will continue to give them content down the line

A 2nd Jazz player - Donovan Mitchell - has tested positive.  Jazz players are saying Gobert was being very careless in the locker room touching other players and their belongings, per reports.

The Jazz were just on the road for several games in the last few days.  Played in arenas that also house NHL teams as well.

Following the FIFA model it sounds like.  Trying to finish '19-'20 regardless of timeline.

I don't think we will have a vaccine or Ab testing in time to allow 18k+ crowds in arenas.  I wonder if they will go to remote sessions to do playoffs.  I know the NHL has talked about it.  Pick a small college town and isolate the teams and refs in a hotel or dorms.  Then play the games in small arenas with no fans.  Games can still be broadcast.  But it's about the safest way to isolate the players and coaches.  Limits travel as well.  So maybe they pick, I don't know, some really small/more remote schools.

yes they mentioned thinking about holding playoff games and the finals quickly in bubble cities, like vegas.

i dk that it will be possible, but its another idea.

maybe they should do that in oklahoma because we already know the governor there will use up all available tests for nba players. ha. err, ugh.

I kind of feel bad for Lebron if they don't pull this off.  He finally had the Lakers in a position to contend, then this happens.   I'm sure he was watching the MJ on ESPN last night...

NBA in talks to resume play at Disney's ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex

The NBA has entered into exploratory conversations with The Walt Disney Company about resuming its season at Disney's ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Florida, in late July, NBA spokesperson Mike Bass said Saturday.

It remains unclear whether the NBA will play the remainder of its regular season or proceed directly to the playoffs.  But the 220-acre ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, with three arenas and ample hotel accommodations, would allow the league to restart play while limiting outside exposure.

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported that the NBA has a board of governors call set for next Friday, which is expected to provide additional details for teams on a timetable and plan to proceed with the season.

Sources: NBA to approve plan for 22-team return with eight regular-season games

The NBA's board of governors intends to approve a league proposal on a 22-team format to restart the season in Orlando, Florida.  The conference call and vote is set for 12:30 p.m. ET on Thursday, sources said.

Commissioner Adam Silver and the league's advisory/finance committee have shared the broad details of a plan with teams to play at The Walt Disney World Resort, sources told ESPN.  The plan includes 13 Western Conference teams and nine Eastern Conference teams, eight regular-season games, a possible play-in tournament for the eighth seed, and playoffs.

The top 16 teams in the Eastern and Western conferences will be joined by teams currently within six games of eighth place in the two conferences -- New Orleans, Portland, San Antonio, Sacramento, Phoenix and Washington, sources said.

NBA's timetable for return of the 2019-20 season:

June 15:  Players traveling outside the U.S. return to team markets

June 22:  All other players return to team markets

June 23:  Head coaches can begin working with players in voluntary workouts

July 7:  Teams begin arriving in Florida

July 9-29: Training camp in Florida with three scrimmages per team

July 30:  Seeding games begin (eight per team)

Aug: 17:  Playoffs begin

Aug. 30:  Family and guests of teams may arrive

Sept. 30:  Target NBA Finals date

MORE:  https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/28911848/when-nba-return-latest-updates-amid-coronavirus-suspension

I get the "seeding games" and possible #8/#9 play-in games, but after that...have they talked about doing all of the series best of 5?  That's a really right schedule - basically 45 days to get through three rounds (opening round, conference semis, conference finals).  Or will they literally just go every other day and try to condense it all and keep them best of 7s?

The eight NBA teams outside of the Disney World bubble that have been eliminated from the restart of the 2019-20 season - aka the "Delete Eight" - won’t get to hold a summer tournament that had some hoped for to make up for the long layoff amid the coronavirus pandemic:

I'm not the biggest sports fan these days and mostly just watch when Cleveland teams or maybe OSU football have big games, but I might watch some NBA when it restarts. A two month season sounds fun and short enough to hold my attention. ?

Probably will just become a temporary Lakers fan because LeBron.

A look at the NBA court set-up within the Orlando bubble:

The NBA is Back:

The first game was Utah vs. New Orleans.  And everyone was rightfully excited about the return of Zion Williamson.  But in one of those "funny how fate works" moments, Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert (who's positive coronavirus test triggered the suspension of the NBA season) scored the first points of the league's restart.  But not only that, Gobert also scored the game's final points, hitting a pair of go-ahead free throws with 6.9 seconds remaining for the win(!)

If MLB or the NFL were forced to finish their seasons  "in a bubble,"   This is how it would have to look.   3-4 games a day in the same stadium.

The question would be what city would make the most sense.   Maybe Phoenix if later this fall and it cools off a bit?

The NFL could have the indoor facility in Glendale and also Sun Devil stadium at ASU.  MLB could just play in the spring training facilities.

Source: NBA players decide to resume playoffs

NBA players met again Thursday morning -- a day after the Milwaukee Bucks chose not to take the floor for their playoff game against the Orlando Magic -- and voted in favor of resuming the playoffs, a source told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

The Bucks' decision not to play Wednesday led to the postponement of all three playoff games that day.  Thursday afternoon the NBA announced that it would postpone the three playoff games scheduled to be played later that day: Denver-Utah, Boston-Toronto, and LA Clippers-Dallas.

When games officially will be played hasn't been determined as players and league officials continue discussions, though the expectation is that Wednesday's scheduled slate now will be played Saturday, and Thursday's games will be held Sunday.

Interesting that Michael Jordan -- now the owner of the Charlotte Hornets, and the only Black majority owner in the league -- reached out to the players and acted as an important link between the players and owners during this work stoppage and decision to resume play:

The owners held a virtual meeting Thursday morning, and two participants confirmed that Jordan -- who serves as the NBA Labor Relations Committee chairman -- was a voice of reason, urging the other owners to allow the players to express their frustrations and concerns before offering any of their own solutions.

"Right now, listening is better than talking," Jordan told the group, according to sources.

"Michael is the perfect person to be in this role," said a league official who has been privy to discussions on what should happen next.  "He's been a high-profile player who has won championships. He's also the owner of a small-market team. He has great credibility both with the players and the owners."

NBA, NBPA announce playoffs to resume Saturday, new initiatives

The NBA and National Basketball Players Association released a joint statement Friday announcing that the NBA playoffs will resume Saturday and that the league and its players will work together on several initiatives to promote voting access, combat social injustice and racial inequality, and advocate for police reform.

I wish we still had the NBA of four decades ago rather than today's NBA.   Now, the players are running the asylum, the regular season is meaningless and the league is just a few "super teams".   Yeah, I suppose there were "super teams" back then, but at least it wasn't due to player collusion. And we didn't have to hear players giving their political opinions.

Not sure about the tape delays he mentions, maybe it was in some non-NBA markets.

4 decades ago? Yes I long for that parity of the 80's when the Lakers were in the finals 8 out of 10 years and won 5, and the Celtics winning 3. Or the 90's where the Bulls won 6 titles.

Maybe you mean the aughts where the Spurs and Lakers won 7-8 titles?
