are we just going to studiously ignore that the gsw comeback in game one vs the spurs was....formidable?

i didnt see the second half, but i sure wish i had.

Giant Asterisk.  They, once again, are the beneficiaries of good fortune.  No way they finish that off if they dont roll Kawhis ankle

... and starting point guard, Parker, is gone for the playoffs.  A team of Aldridge, Paddy Mills, Danny Green and a bunch of rookies not only blew out Houston by 30, but nearly beat Golden State... Yes, that group gave up a 20-point lead... But with SAS's coaching and, hopefully, Kawhi back, they can beat the Warriors... And even if they don't, they exposed the Warriors and, to me, look less formidable to the Cavs.

^Leonard is announced out for Game 2.

this begs the question -- when are they gonna roll ankles? instead of everybody else getting injured??? i mean i dont wish that, but sheesh.

Last year in the Finals, they lost Bogut in Game 2 and that changed the way they could defend us.  Iggy also hurt either his hamstring or groin and was not the same in the final 3-4 games of that series.  Certainly not as bad as us playing without Kyrie and Love the first year, but the injury bug did bite them last year and we benefited from that.

When GSW cut the lead to 14 I knew they would win. San Antonio went into a panic mode just long enough to let that lead disappear.

Even with Kawhi healthy, Golden State is the better team. That being said, the Warriors are so easy to hate. Their body language is awful. They look like a bunch of spoiled children.

They look like a bunch of spoiled children.

Two of their superstars (Curry and Thompson) most likely were spoiled children.

https://www.si.com/nba/2017/05/16/nba-draft-2017-lottery-winners-losers-celtics-lakers-sixers-markelle-fultz-lonzo-ball

- Boston won last night's NBA Draft Lottery.  That's right, the #1 seed in the East and team in the Eastern Conference Finals will be picking #1 this summer!  The Celtics are reaping a huge reward for a 2013 trade with the Nets in which they acquired Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce in exchange for giving the Celtics their first round draft picks in 2014, 2016 and 2018 (as well as the right to swap first round picks in 2017).  And the Nets finished with the worst record this year, giving the Celtics to best odds to win this year's lottery ... which they did.

- The Lakers came out pretty well too.  They finished third worst and moved up one spot to #2.  But even more importantly, they didn't fall to #4.  If they had fallen to #4, the Sixers would have acquired that pick due to an earlier trade, leaving the Lakers without a first-round pick this year!

I suspect the Celtics will trade their pick.  Maybe the Lakers too (with their eye on acquiring Paul George).  This is not a very top heavy draft.  The top three prospects are all PGs, something the Celts don't need (Thomas, Bradley, Smart).  It will be interesting to see where Lonzo Ball goes.  If it is outside the top 2, I would say it would be undisputable that his sh!thead dad caused him to drop.

Don't forget Terry Rozier! Boston has Timberwolves disease when it comes to point guards for some reason.

I agree I don't think they can take fultz. Ball could play and he and IT could probably play well together as Ball is a pass first guy and IT is a scorer.

They could also look at guys like monk or Jackson, but ultimately I think they trade it and also sign a guy like Gordon Hayward...all of a sudden you have IT, butler, Hayward, horford and you are closer to the Cavs, but still not better

^ yeah way, way overpaying that butt ugly mediocre noah, criticizing melo in public before they had even spoke and then the recent straw that really broke the camel's back, being publically "open" to trading porzingis, which royally pissed him off, did the zen master in. oh and the losing. yeah that too. lol.

I feel like the Hayward singing doesn't move the needle very much for the Celtics, specifically against the Cavs. I think it has the possibility to pay off down the line, but doesn't Avery/Crowder already give them 80% of Hayward? And one of those two will have to be moved (unless it's Smart) while the other loses minutes and touches. I feel like this will also limit the value of IT. Thomas is only worth anything on the court when he's running the offense and scoring the ball. I'll actually be more worried if they're able to move Thomas for pieces to complement Hayward and Horford. Very glad they didn't end up with PG or Butler. Cavs in 5.

Swaggy P signs with the Warriors?  Here's hoping his 'swag' infects that locker room.  I think every team he has ever been on has went into the crapper.

Wizards picked him in the mid first round in 2007.  By the time he left, in 2012, they were a lottery team.  He played one season in Philly and it was the first season the missed the playoffs in a while.  They haven't made the playoffs since.  Then the Lakers barely made the playoffs his first season there and have not made it back since.

^I agree that Hayward is not a game changer for the Celts, especially since they have to renounce Kelly Olynick and also get rid of some combo of Bradley/Smart/Crowder, all very good defenders.  In fact, I would maybe argue that signing makes the matchup against the Cavs more difficult.

Lebron Jr is only going into 8th grade.

^ and he already has offers from every major D1 college.

thats fine. College is a bit different than High School...you dont have to live with your family at college.  dont know why he would commit to a HS when in 8th grade, especially with the dynamic nature of the NBA.  I dont think Lebron would go to LA just to team up with PG.  Kawhi would have to be there too...but I dont think the Spurs would trade Kawhi to the Lakers.  Thats a rival of the spurs and they are smarter than the cavs.  Lebron to LA with an overrated Paul George would be nothing but humiliating for Lebron

The San Antonio Spurs have agreed to trade Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green to the Toronto Raptors for DeMar DeRozan, Jakob Poeltl and a protected 2019 first-round pick, league sources tell ESPN.  Toronto's first-round pick to San Antonio is a protected 1-20 selection.  After one year, it becomes two second-round picks:

Lol it's going to be a brutal year for Bron.

The national media is in real denial about this mediocrity. The Lakers aren't the Sixers or C's. It's quite the bricklaying crew Magic has assembled. Trying to figure who the #2 scoring option is difficult. Kevin Love is still a better scorer than anyone on the current Lakers roster. Maybe one of the younger guys will shine. They will need to in order to be a top-4 seed in the West.

Being the 2018 version of the '89 Detroit Pistons won't work against GSW. Hell by '91 the Bulls figured those Pistons out.

I think they understand they won’t be winning it this year. But there’s at least a decent chance that 2 of Ball/Kuzma/Hart/Ingram turn out to be borderline all-stars. Then they can add someone in next year’s stacked free agent class. The Lakers will most likely be very good in 2019 and it will be very annoying.

I think it's weird that Magic couldn't get it done this year. Clearly, Magic was betting on PG13 and Kawhi. Cavs in 2014 and obviously the Heat in 2010 were better than the current Lakers roster.  LeBron will be 35 in the 2019-20 season. Tick, tock. National media is mostly ignoring this issue too pretending he will go on forever. We'll see.

Oh, and also the NBA was up for grabs every other time LeBron left. Not this time.

Magic should set up a meeting with his old coach to see how it's done.

I actually think LeBron won't get any more rings unless he somehow puts his ego aside and plays 28 minutes a night as a 3rd/4th option on a loaded team.  But that won't happen.

Not even sure he gets back to the Finals, tbh.

The Golden State run will come to an end in the next couple years. It's hard to say what the future holds after that team splits up.

^ 4 year contract with the Lakers. If GS ceases to be the Monstars after next season, who knows what direction the league will head. Philly went from comically bad to contending for the East in just a few seasons. The Cavs were complete shit for a couple seasons before Lebron came back and took them to the finals 4 years in a row. Who can say.

As sports fans debate over whether Super Bowl LIII was a super bore (IMO not much debate) it was interesting to also see the "Super Bowl Week" that preceded "The Big Game" get totally overshadowed by NBA Hot Stove talk!  And there was alot of NBA Hot Stove to chew over:

  • Kyrie Irving now says he not committed to signing that contract extension with the Boston Celtics that he was "fully committed" to signing before this season began.  There's even some rumors that he might rejoin LeBron in LA(!)
  • Anthony Davis (aka The Unibrow) requested a trade out of New Orleans!  He has one year remaining on his contract after this season, so he doesn't have to be traded by the upcoming trade deadline - he could be dealt over the summer.  Some rumors are that LeBron's LA Lakers will work out a trade to acquire AD.  See the previous item for the makings of LeBron's new LAK superteam with Kyrie and AD(!)
  • The New York Knicks traded Kristaps Porzingis (aka the Unicorn) to Dallas for two future 1st-round picks and a bunch of players on expiring contracts.  The Mavs can pair 7'-3" Porzingis and this season's likely rookie-of-the-year Luka Dončić for a dynamic young duo to build around in future seasons.  The Knicks clear $71 million in cap space to go free-agent hunting over the summer -- with KD, Kyrie, Kawhi, Klay and Butler all being potential players for the Knicks to acquire(!)

I like the Pels playing hardball with the Lakers. Hopefully LeBron is forced to waste one of the few remaining years of his career on a talentless 8 seed.

Also John Wall ruptured his Achilles in a non-basketball accident. Man, the Wizards can’t match the sublime incompetence of the Browns or Kings, but an argument could be made they’re a more miserable franchise. Going on 20 years of underachieving hopelessness.

In the NBA regular season I've found the annual race to the bottom more compelling than finding out the playoff seedings.  And this season's race to bottom - aka Dyin For Zion - is a great one.  As of this posting at approx 2/11, 7:30pm it is:

  • New York Knicks      --  10-45 (.182)
  • Phoenix Suns            --  11-47 (.190)
  • Cleveland Cavaliers  -- 11-45 (.196)
  • Chicago Bulls            -- 13-43 (.232)
  • Atlanta Hawks           -- 18-38 (.321)

BTW - the Cavs host the Knicks tonight(!)

Knicks lost to the Cavs last night.  Congrats to the Knicks for retaining their worst record in the 2018-19 NBA season.  And the Knicks did it in record fashion by setting a franchise-record 17-game losing streak!  No other team is Dyin For Zion as well as the NY Knicks!!

Meanwhile, the Knicks just sent a pitch to season-ticket holders to renew their packages for the 2019-20 season.  Below is the image they sent with that pitch:

47074818251_6678c2c2f0_d.jpg

And then deleted that KD image when the public found out.  As another New Yorker famously said, "No Collusion!"

How are the NBA's ratings this year? I stopped watching when it was clear the league would do anything to have the Warriors win starting 5 years ago. Just this year I've seen multiple late game calls/no calls go in favor of the Warriors it's almost laughable. Like the most egregious calls/no calls I've ever seen. Once KD was 3 feet out of bounds to retrieve a ball and they didn't call it with the ref staring right at him. Took Harden heroics to win that one. Which by the way the Rockets should have been playing the Cavs last year. Completely jobbed by the refs for the entire WCF. This is just from highlights. I can't imagine watching something so clearly rigged.

Why would the NBA want one team to win all the time? Also, refs had nothing to do with Rockets missing 27(!) 3 pointers in a row.

I don't think it's the teams, but the players. The NBA is a star league, not a team league. And they like high flying west coast fun guys KD and Curry. They hate blue collar rust belt guys like LeBron. Mostly because they know he'll succeed without them anyway, as he has. He's been allowed to be hacked and bowled over his entire career because he can take it. If he got the same treatment as toothpick KD or hand slap Curry I'm sure he would have 7 championships by now. Remind me again of the free throw discrepancies of last year's WCF?

The NBA's regular season race to the bottom continues to be compelling:

  • New York Knicks      --  13-51 (.203)
  • Phoenix Suns            --  14-51 (.215)
  • Cleveland Cavaliers  -- 16-48 (.250)
  • Chicago Bulls            -- 18-47 (.277)
  • Atlanta Hawks           -- 22-43 (.338)

It looked like the Suns were well on their way to the worst record.  But then, they shockingly allowed LeBron's Lakers to lose to them - allowing the Knicks to regain the worst record.

But tonight, we get the cellar dweller match-up we've all been waiting for:  The 14-51 Suns host the 13-51 Knicks.  IMO, the Suns/Knicks loser should just be given the regular-season worst-record crown and cancel all remaining games(!)

Wednesday's cellar dweller battle royale was won by the Suns:

Or was it the Knicks, who have lost their last four and passed Phoenix for the worst-record crown.  Phoenix clearly doesn't understand how to lose well enough and is now on a three-game winning streak - threatening the third-to-last Cavs:
