October 29, 201014 yr Split off messages that had less to do with the Cavs and more to do with general NBA discussion, and placed them in this thread. Carry on, NBA chatters. October 29, 201014 yr MTS, I think Hts121's point was that 20-second timeouts aren't really 20 seconds. When I'm watching a game on delay on my DVR, after a 20-second timeout is called and everyone has headed over to the sidelines, I can press the 30-second skip button and they're still huddled up on the sideline. I press it again and they're walking back onto the court. It seems as if the 20-second timeouts are really about 45 seconds. And it seems that the 60-second and 100-second timeouts are about 3 minutes and 5 minutes respectively. I think it's like that for every sport. I mean a 1 hour football game is 2:20 Minutes. There was an article in the WSJ, I think, a while back that reviewed NFL games. They came to the conclusion that for each hour of game watched there were something like 11-13 mins of actual game action. This included all time that had inaction, so even pre-snap when the clock was running i think was considered inaction. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704281204575002852055561406.html Be interesting to see what the break out of basketball is, especially a comparison of the first 46 min to the last 2 min. (and to think soccer is looked down upon, but has 45+ min of continuous play a half)

Play continues unabated, with whichever team that is down pressing, creating, and in general creating havoc. also leads to long counter attacks think (Landon Donovan's goal in the WC) which may be the most exciting sequences in all of sports.

October 29, 201014 yr LeBron and Wade: Can it work? In Michael Eisner's thoughtful book about partnerships, he tells a story about getting wooed by Disney in 1984. The company arranged a meeting between Eisner, one of its corporate lawyers and a former Warner Brothers executive named Frank Wells. Eisner expected to be offered control of the company, but there was an unexpected twist: Disney actually wanted him to share power with Wells. Co-CEOs. Instinctively, Eisner turned them down. Riley/the Heat, ESPN, Nike all trying to do damage control ::) ::) ::) Riley and Nike need to be in full damage control mode. They have a product that isn't living up to the hype right now. I wouldn't say that Simmons article was damage control (I'm sure there is an article somewhere in the mothership that is more apologetic and upbeat for the Heat's prospects). More pointing out where the problems lie with this "marriage". And I think he is right for the most part, at least through the first 2 games of an 82 game season. Call me in January, then I'll care about the NBA again. Which is fantastic once you hit the final 10 min (about equivalent to the final 2 min in Basketball). Hey, I just threw my original comment in as an afterthought. But yes we both have made our positions and agree to disagree on the sport. I do think the NBA could use some changes to make the last 2 mins more like the other 46 min.
October 29, 201014 yr Not buying what LeBron James is selling: Bill Livingston All the King's horses, not to mention all of his fawning men, are trying to put LeBron James' image together again. The new commercial Nike has crafted for him is called "Rise." It aims for introspection, as James, going back in time to before his abdication to Miami, asks repeatedly, "What should I do?" It achieves a strange mix of self-pity and defiance instead. Significantly, the first shot in the commercial is of James in the same purple shirt he wore for the televised bomb that was "The Decision," speaking while seated in what looks like the same director's chair.

November 12, 201014 yr Bullied LeBron questioning Spo's lineups? 08:13 AM ET 11.12 | The second of two bad home losses didn't bring out the best in the Heat. "For myself, 44 minutes is too much," James declared. "I think Coach Spo knows that. Forty minutes for D-Wade is too much. We have to have as much energy as we can to finish games out." Read more: http://www.fannation.com/truth_and_rumors/view/247835-bullied-lebron-questioning-spos-lineups#ixzz1555hDmUZ Well that didn't take long. I am convinced that Byron Scott's no BS style was the final nail in the Cavs chance at retaining LBJ. Hmmm maybe Coach Spo should give Mike Brown a call to see how this movie ends...
November 12, 201014 yr No matter what you hear, the 'final nail' was set well before last season even started. The comment about playing time is odd though. I don't remember him ever complaining about playing too much when he was here.
November 12, 201014 yr ^ Agreed HTS. the final nail is probably a bad analogy. His mind was 99.9% made up at the beginning of the season that if Miami swung the cap space he was going there. It was the final swing of the hammer to double check all of those nails were driven in.
November 12, 201014 yr Whoa, I am working from home this afternoon and listened to Rome on my way home. He went off on the LeBron and the Heat, particulary LBJs comment on too much PT....
November 12, 201014 yr Rome never liked Lebron.... and his disdain may flow freely now that Lebron has alienated one of Rome's largest and most loyal markets.
November 12, 201014 yr I'm waiting for the interveiw with LeBron with the question "so you left Cleveland, burned a bunch of bridges, and came to Miami for the opportunity to play with Wade/Bosh and win a championship. Except Miami is not as good as Cleveland was last year. Do you regret your decision?"
November 12, 201014 yr I read that Paul Pierce, after the Celtics dismantled the Heat for a second time this season, tweeted; "It was a pleasure bringing my talents down to South Beach" ... Classic! BTW the Las Vegas ESPN radio affiliate is giving away two tickets to the Cavs vs Heat game on Dec 2nd. This game will get a lot of national hype; it would be interesting if the fans could come up with a unified response other than what I'm sure will be booing laced with a healthy dose of profanity. Is it possible to get 20,000 fans to silently stand and turn their collective backs to LeBum when he's introduced?
November 12, 201014 yr ^Thats what I'm hoping happens. Silence + backs turned when he enters and when he's shooting free throws.
November 23, 201014 yr "They" just lost two in a row and are 8-6. Last year at this time without the Chosen One, "they" were 9-5.... "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

December 17, 201014 yr Ha! that show is funny. I'd rather have that than Rover. There's too much opportunity in the NBA (and pro sports). It's too much temptation. Law of averages catches up with these guys real quick.

March 5, 201114 yr Just when you might think that LeBron and the Heat are putting things together for a title run, they drop four of their last five games. They lost at Chicago, against the Knicks at home, against Orlando at home and the next night at San Antonio. Those last two losses must be especially jarring for the Heat. They were up 24 points in the 3rd quarter. Then the Magic went on a 40-9 run en route to the win. The Heat follow this on the next night by getting routed 125-95 by the best-in-the-west Spurs. All is not well in Miami!
March 7, 201114 yr Shall we shed a tear for the Miami Heat? You can join the team if you want. USA Today: Is it OK for Miami Heat players to cry after loss? Sunday's 87-86 loss to Chicago at home was Miami's latest defeat in a 5 out of 6 losing stretch. Although Miami's overall record looks great, the Heat have very sub-par records against teams with winning records and in game-ending situations. Which is trouble for the Heat because those are the two things teams face in the playoffs. Here's some info on that from ESPN's Heat vs. Bulls game recap: "Since Jan. 1st, the Heat have played only 4 opponents at home that entered the game with a winning record. Miami has held leads in all 4 games but have had trouble closing out their opponents and as a result have lost each game by 5 points or fewer." Only once this season has Miami scored a field goal when down three or less in the final 10 seconds of the fourth quarter or OT. Player FGM-FGA LeBron James 1-7 Dwyane Wade 0-5 Eddie House 0-2 Mario Chalmers 0-2 Chris Bosh 0-1 Mike Miller 0-1 Team Total 1-18 In yesterday's game, both LeBron and Wade missed game-winning shots with under 10 seconds remaining.
March 11, 201114 yr Don't cry for the Heat too much. They just stopped their five-game losing streak with a win over the Lakers last night in Miami.

April 8, 201114 yr The Bulls handled the Celtics last night. I am starting to actually looking forward to the Playoffs. Here's hoping that the Celts hold on to the number 2 spot in the East.
April 8, 201114 yr Definitely an odd move. Green has value as a third option with two superstars, but not much as a bench guy getting 20 minutes a game on a team with 4 all-stars in front of him. Perkins is a perfect rotation guy who doesn't need the ball to be effective and who rebounds and blocks shots.
April 8, 201114 yr I think there was concern about re-signing Perkins.... i.e. a difference in opinion between the franchise and his people on what he is worth. Getting a former #5 pick (Green) and a serviceable big-man (Kristic) was better than cutting their losses. I too am really looking forward to the Playoffs. If things stay as they are, it will be NYK-Mia in the 1st round. Talk about a court full of divas..... should be interesting. I am also going to go out on a ledge and say that Portland is going to make some unexpected noise out west. They are really starting to come together since that Wallace trade and Roy getting back healthy. Denver is another middle tier team I don't think anyone wants to play.

Green is an RFA this year though and while he's not good, some team will probably offer him a terrible contract forcing Boston to either match or let him go. If they are willing to pay Green, they should've been willing to pay Perk as Green will probably cost more to re-sign. If they aren't going to pay Green, then this trade would be even worse as it'd be swapping Green and Perk for one run at a title this year.
May 25, 201114 yr Holy shite! Brown out of Warriors' search, to coach Lakers http://www.csnbayarea.com/05/24/11/Sources-Lakers-will-hire-Mike-Brown/landing_steinmetz_v3.html?blockID=528498&feedID=5986&awid=8691255343164497477
May 25, 201114 yr Personally, I thought Mike Brown was a horrible coach. He made so many poor decisions and seemed like he didn't know what he was doing. I think we would have had a better chance of winning a championship if he wasn't the coach. Bad decision im my opinion by the Lakers. Not that I care!
May 25, 201114 yr Mike Brown made some mistakes. He wasn't perfect. But he was the subject of unwarranted vitriole by the fans. The man led the Cavs to the best records in franchise history, the NBA finals, the conference finals.... all while managing the the drama involved with Lebron. Cleveland fans might blame him for the team's alleged shortcomings, but you don't get the Lakers job by being "Mr. Potato Head" as Cavs fans called him. He also was the front-runner for the Golden State job and under consideration for nearly every other opening. I'll go witht he experts' opinions..... after all, they are the ones who are willing to invest millions in the man.
May 25, 201114 yr I always thought he was a good regular season coach. His shortcomings (i.e. his inability to change up the offense) were really highlighted during the playoffs, and that was why I was ok with them letting him go when they did. He'll have a lot of weapons with the Lakers. I just wonder how he'll handle the personalities.
May 25, 201114 yr Please, somebody, tell me how the Mavericks are going to beat the Heat. I need some kind of hope.
May 25, 201114 yr I'm not even watching. It's not even about Lebron so much for me anymore. I have a bigger problem with if they win everything (or even if they make it to the finals, truthfully). Have we now established the new benchmark for success? Do you have to have 3 superstars on your team (or 2 superstars and Chris Bosh) in order to contend now? What's that going to do as far as the overall competitiveness of the league? If the NBA regular season just turns into a 5 month waiting game so that the teams with the supers can take off in the playoffs, well, then I have no interest in following that product.
