Anyone download the 2.01 update?  I did, it bricked my phone (hurrah), I then restored it, now it's working pretty well (of course I never bothered backing stuff up in a while so I had to reprogram some calendar and phone number stuff.

Question to Iphone generation 1 owners - are you going to bother the recent update or just wait for 2.1 in September?  Since I/we don't have 3g, then the update really shouldn't make much of a difference, other than costing a quarter of a gig.  Or does the update have other benefits?

I updated my 3G iPhone last night and it took 3 hours to backup - awful!

Are there any medical doctors out there who use the iphone to download their med information? I'm looking to get my wife an iphone for xmas and I need to know how useful it is for her needs.

I have T-Mobile service so iphone is not possible for me.  For the past couple years, I have been a faithful Blackberry guy.  But my wife just recently got me a G1 and I really like it.  I still have my bb, but the G1 is definitely better for entertainment/media/sharing/etc.  It is T-Mobile's (with a little help from Google) response to the iphone.

 

Edit:  I know I am a year late on this breakthrough, but then again, I have never been on the cutting edge of technology.

BB's are better for business and iPhones are better fro entertainment and fun.

I had a tester, I didn't like it.  the google apps.  GREAT!  Outside of that I was underwhelmed, but I'll admit I didn't embrace the phone and any phone you buy you need to keep atleast 30 days to "bond" with.

 

I'll admit I'm not a mobile phone guy - as I hate being "connected - but I do like my iTouch for games.

That is what my G1 operates on.  I have no complaints, but have never owned an iphone so I can't compare.  But it seems like there are more free apps and, unlike the iphone, you can change your screen saver.

Really? my G1 can pinpoint me with a frightening amount of accuracy.  I think i had to allow it to do so rather than just using the nearest tower as my location.

 

It took me a little while to get used to the idea that i was allowing Google to know exactly where i was at all times.  I'm not a fan of all this technology invading our privacy all the time...but of course, we're all signing up for it every day.

That might be my problem.  Most of the time, I am within the sphere they give me, but not everytime.  For instance, I was in Collinwood this weekend and it was telling me that I was somewhere between ChinaTown and Ohio City.  How do I change it so it isn't just looking for the nearest tower.

under settings there is a security/location tab...if you are really conscious about saving battery life then you don't keep the "Enable GPS Satelites" thing checked...but if you want to actually see where you are, you do.

 

My wife has been looking at it as we've been driving down 75 before and has remarked at how accurate it is in pinpointing us.

Disney had a phone and service that did just that.  My nephew and neice had it when they started school.

 

It folded about a year or year-and-a-half ago.

The N900 destroys the iPhone in everyway possible. The iPhone is popular for the same way Wal-Mart and McDonalds are popular.

i like to play with the pandora app when i'm out and about. i just wish it recognized more music than it does.

^^ I had a chance to mess around with the N900 about a week ago and it's just sick. It has an xterminal app built it and root control ... that's all I need to say. All 100% open source linux baby!

 

With the N900, proper processor/ram, and HSDPA, I see the end for an "app store." Your phone and its browser just do everything that apps do.

Meh, the N900 is 50% thicker than the iPhone. I like that my iPhone goes into my pocket. People like imitations for the same reason they like Linux and organic cotton underwear. It's a bit better and it makes you feel special, but most people are busy with other things in life and just don't give a shit. People like me.

 

^ You're crazy ... take a look at netbook sales 4q vs laptop sales. I had 2 iphones and sold them because of the restrictions. My S605 is better than iphone and symbian was doing what iphone was doing 5 years ago. Enough with milking the market!

 

btw, the n900 goes easily into the pocket. Like I said, I messed around with one the other day ... you're right, but most people see spending $200 on a cell phone as too much too. People are busy, but they spend more time on their laptop than they do a tv, they've just never had a cell phone that could take the place of it.

While many may choose a cell phone based on important criteria such as coverage, technology, usability, and ease, there will always be one other factor that puts the Iphone above the rest: That little Apple logo in silver on the back of a white shell. It's brand recognition, much along the lines of a Gucci watch or a Mercedes-Benz logo. Needless to say, the Iphone is still the best phone I have ever used.

When I was selling phones in the early 2000's ... teenagers didn't want anything to do with a fullkeypad and large screen. It was seen as a "nerdy" phone and it was too big. Now, they don't want anything unless it has those two features and the size and weight doesn't matter as long as it has the features.

I got the Droid on Monday. Based on the few days I have had it, I like it. The Google Apps are pretty slick. Being able to say "Navigate to a really, really, really nice Spanish Resaturant in Washington, DC" and have it not only understand what you just said but actually give you a list of nice Spanish Restaurants in Washington DC and navigate to the one you select is pretty damn cool. It's also pretty nice in that it has a physical Keyboard. My fingers are not large by any means (in fact, I have tiny hands), but even with tiny hands I don't have the dexterity to click on the virtual keyboard. If you do have the dexterity that I lack though, it has haptic feedback so you should know when you touch something.

 

So, far, so good!

See, I have almost no physical coordination at all, I couldn't even win in a fistfight with my little sister, and it took me about 20 minutes to become fluent with the iPhone keyboard. I'm also constantly amazed at the battery life, compared to every other smartphone I've had. (Blackberrys and Moto Q's/Blackjacks.) My 59 year old mother figured out every feature on my iPhone in 10 minutes, and she doesn't even know how to get the battery cover off of her Storm. (God that's a terrible phone right there.)

I had never owned an Apple product before. I have hand-built all my PCs. I have been using Firefox since before it was cool. Etc, etc. But I love my iPhone.

I hate the iphone, but love the functionality of the older Treo's, as you could store a bunch of information in each contact, something you cannot do with blackberry's or iphones.  and the older treo's mesh well with outlook/windows products.

mrnyc, remember our app death discussion, you can see where they've eliminated a tweet, skype, gtalk, and every other type of IM app just from the contact list alone.

Honestly, I already think there is a much-much more superior platform out already, it's called Android. I've had two iPhones, 1 N97, and a MyTouch 3G right now and I'd keep the MyTouch over them all with a close 2nd with the N97, but I just sold my N97 and will be selling the MyTouch soon and go strictly N900.

 

... but if you like the Apple mobile OS, then check out Android.

Most phone price drop 3-6 months after release and/or when a new model in the series is introduced.

Alright, after having and using (heavily) the N900 for about a week or so ... I must say that this is the most advanced, feature packed, over-loaded, sickest phone I have ever used. I've owned 2 iPhones, the N97, an Android device, Palm OS, etc., etc., and nothing comes even close!

 

We always hear about phones replacing netbooks/laptops and/or consolidating our gadgets, but this device actually does this.

 

From the 3G to 3.5G HSPA+, 32GB HD (upgradable to 32GB more), to the full-Flash and HTML5 Mozilla web-browser, it does it all ... and fast. I was a little skeptable of the 600Mhz Cortex-A8 processor, but because of the 3 independent processors handling different functions of the phone - it works out well.

 

The camera is pretty standard with a 5MP Carl Zeiss lens, but the front 0.3MP (640x480) camera is what's sweet. Skype, Gtalk, etc. is all built in with SIP functionality.

 

The other day someone "Skyped" me and they show up on the screen and then my video broadcast popped up in the top left-hand corner. Pretty sweet ... especially over 3G!

 

If you're using 3G on an Android device and are standing next to me on T-Mobile, my data connection will almost double yours. Instead of apps (which there are a ton of) I just save my favorite webpages to my desktop and click on them if I want to see something. No need for apps. It supports Flash!

 

It's completely open-source Linux goodness with xTerminal built in and it's actually ENCOURAGED unlike the iPhone.

 

It's packing 267 ppi, more than any phone on the market and it's 800x480 screen is amazing - using more than 16 million colors.

 

For anyone bitching about resistive screens, they've never used this phone. Also, there is no way in hell you could browse the web "correctly" with capacitive on this thing.

 

The iPhone will have to integrate homescreen widgets and 224-360º rotation if it wants to compete.

 

Is this phone for the mass-market? No way ... Is it what someone would want if they're internet, techy freaks? Of course.

 

 

 

Let's just say that I am very pleased. If anyone wants to see any screenshots, let me know ... printscreen is a feature built in. ;)

I have the droid on verizons network. Probably the best phone I've owned to date.
