July 12, 201014 yr ^ Read Pogue's review of the EVO before you buy it. Sounds like a great concept phone, but Gen 1 seems a little buggy. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/17/technology/personaltech/17pogue.html?_r=1&scp=1&sq=evo&st=cse Well, I got my Blackberry Tour through work <play sad trombone>. It would be a nice phone if they didn't turn off everything about a smart phone that makes it useful.
July 12, 201014 yr My nephew has the iphone 4 and it's really growing on me. Since he's been in NYC and his cousins are at home. Everywhere he goes he's filming or video chatting with them so its like they are right here. This weekend we were in Central Park and my mom called as we entered the conservatory garden. Next thing I know, he's video chatting with my Mom and showing her what we see in the Garden. Then we're at the apartment I like and he's showing my parents the space. I might even buy the phone, just for video capabilities. I wish they had that on the itouch. Not everyone wants an iphone.
July 13, 201014 yr ^ There are better options for video calling ... even allowing you to video call over 3G ... has been for a long time. Here we go ... Now Consumer Reports is reporting the issue a major problem: Lab tests: Why Consumer Reports can't recommend the iPhone 4 Lab test: Apple iPhone 4 design defect confirmed It's official. Consumer Reports' engineers have just completed testing the iPhone 4, and have confirmed that there is a problem with its reception. When your finger or hand touches a spot on the phone's lower left side—an easy thing, especially for lefties—the signal can significantly degrade enough to cause you to lose your connection altogether if you're in an area with a weak signal. Due to this problem, we can't recommend the iPhone 4. http://blogs.consumerreports.org/electronics/2010/07/apple-iphone-4-antenna-issue-iphone4-problems-dropped-calls-lab-test-confirmed-problem-issues-signal-strength-att-network-gsm.html A quote from Engadget & how I personally believe: "The issue is real, and a real pain in the ass. I used my original iPhone for almost three years, and never with a case. True, I can get better reception on the iPhone4 than I could with the 1st gen model, but if I'm not careful with the way I hold it, I get worse. Having to buy an accessory to make the product work in a reasonable way is criminal." ... Folks, the problem is this, why should manufacturers be held accountable to design a better products when we'll keep 'em flying off shelves no matter what happens? Not only did they not recall defective products, but they're telling customers that they're the one's responsible for shelling out the $30 for a gel skin (which they shouldn't have to do anyway). What if every company responded in this manner? Are we really that brainwashed that we'd purchase an item with full prior knowledge that there is a defect in a way that the item fully relies on (data, voice calls)? Yes, the answer is yes. :drunk: WTF is going on here? lol :drunk:

If I'm not mistaken, it was becoming standardized in '05 or '06??? I know I've had a few phones that supported UMTS video calling a few years ago (and have since then), but our networks in the U.S. (we're playing catch up!) were too slow ... and I guess At&t's can't support or I should say doesn't want to. If you call me right now whether that be phone, skype, Gtalk, AIM, Yahoo, etc., I can video chat with you over 3G right now ... as well as speaker, etc.
July 13, 201014 yr I use Sprint 3G/4G for the laptop. It's an amazing service! Very fast, you can go anywhere and it never cuts out.

Where you can do face to face and video where the recipient can see exactly what you're seeing. If they can why have none announce that?
July 13, 201014 yr They probably rely more on the sales reps to tell you about the features. That is their job. Besides, Samsung and Nokia don't get a special on CNN every time they come out with something new, the way Apple does.
July 13, 201014 yr A lot of Nokia phones aren't carried by US carriers, either. Nokia won't design their phones based on phone company specifications.
July 13, 201014 yr Looks like Blackberry is trying to respond, but I think it may be too late BlackBerry 6 sneak peek at WES 2010
July 14, 201014 yr MTS, I'm going to say this again and that's it ... The U.S. is slow when it comes to cell phone tech. Think about it, TMO's real life 4G speeds are in the 4-9Mbps range and basic DSL is in the 3-7Mbps range and we've had video chatting in the time of dial-up, how is this so hard to understand or believe? Google: UMTS This is why folks overseas think we're so dumb in this area, old tech will advertise as new tech in the states and we eat it up! Like AJ mentioned earlier and I have a few pages back, specific manufaturers won't conform to our carriers strict requiremnts. There's a lot of B.S. in this area - in the states.

July 14, 201014 yr That doesn't answer my question. Here in the states is there another phone that has video/camera capabilities equal to what is offered on the current iphone? Yes or No? Yes. http://www.android.com/market/#app=com.fring EDIT: The above link doesn't seem to go straight to the app in the market. To get to it, go to Top Free apps, category Communication, and it's about halfway down. Here are links to the two screenshots: http://www.android.com/market/data/screenshots/com.fring0.png http://www.android.com/market/data/screenshots/com.fring1.png It works over BOTH WiFi and 3G. The iPhone will only let you video chat over WiFi. Kind of defeats the purpose of having it on a mobile device for many people. Also, there is an app for both Android and iPhone, so you can talk to people with either phone, not just fellow users of the same device. It also works with other protocols such as Skype, so you could have a conversation with someone on their computer using Skype or one of a number of other video chat services. Also, Skype is coming out with an Android app by the end of the year. EDIT: For the visual of the short answer (yes) just click the link below: http://www.android.com/market/data/screenshots/com.fring0.png
July 14, 201014 yr Jam I think you've misunderstood my question or I wasn't clear. What smartphone comes with a camera/video of that quality and the equivalent to facetime built in??? Not an application.
July 14, 201014 yr Facetime is an application. It's just bundled with the phone. Fring is free, so it's just as good.
July 15, 201014 yr MTS, I've said it at LEAST 3 or 4 times already, I've been able to video chat on my N900 for the last damn year! lol ... I don't know what else to say? You've got "hardware" and then you've got "software" ... the hardware does the hard part, the software tells the hardware what to do ... and with UMTS video calling these two have been doing this for years. jam, tell me you're not starting to feel like you're on a SNL skit? lol The infamous video with the two cartoon characters discussing the iPhone and Evo IS this board ... it's not a joke, it's reality!

As my father would often say to me, "Don't double talk me!" :whip:
July 15, 201014 yr That was the point in my sarcastic post. You're getting technical by saying the iPhone has it out of the box and the Android phones don't. It's easily attainable for free on the Android phones, and apps are touted as a simple to use feature on both phones, so I don't think it's a big deal to download the app if you're looking to video conference. Also, your original questions were: "those options are? can the person see what you see like the iphone?" and "You're telling me that all of the above phone can do video chat in the exact same manner as the iphone 4? Where you can do face to face and video where the recipient can see exactly what you're seeing. If they can why have none announce that?" and "That doesn't answer my question. Here in the states is there another phone that has video/camera capabilities equal to what is offered on the current iphone? Yes or No?" Once I answered those questions, you changed the question and added "built-in". My point in all this is not to say the iPhone isn't a great phone or doesn't ever push the envelope. My point is that Android phones are also great phones. I think Android phones have pretty much caught up with iPhones because you will see some features appear first in iPhone and then they'll appear on Android, but also vice versa. And I think the ones that show up on Android first (like multitasking) take longer to make their way over to iPhone due to the closed nature of the OS. Features seem to rapidly migrate over to Android phones. FaceTime is a great app, and sure, it may be better in some ways than the Android equivalent right now. But I'd be willing to bet an Android video chat app will emerge (whether it be Fring, Skype, or another app) and become better than FaceTime fairly soon.

July 15, 201014 yr Are Sony phones any good, Cincinnatus? It seems like Sony has really gone downhill as of a couple years ago. I had a Vaio like 5-6 years ago and it was awesome; then got another Vaio 2 years ago and it was a piece of crap. It wasn't durable at all and came with all of this bs software that companies clearly paid them to put on there for the advertisement, to reduce the cost of the computer. I was wondering if Ericsons are the same way in terms of quality and cutting corners.

July 15, 201014 yr Cincinnatius, Please show me another phone that can do video chat face-to-face and has the app built in and the app starts with Face and ends with ime. Oh, also, show me another phone that can do all this and have a logo of a fruit on the back. Then, you need to make a Genie appear and have him manufacture those phones right in front of my face so I know that Steve Jobs didn't actually invent them. Didn't think so. July 15, 201014 yr I don't understand why they make such a big deal about the 4x increased resolution on the iphone. How is Apple doing it this time? - the secondary camera is VGA (bitch, please) - the video calling is over wifi only?! (wtf? Apple, do you think we're stupid or something? Yes, yes we are.) ________________________________________ In other news ... Apple is going to have an emergency press conference tomorrow ... Both phones must also support video calling and/or video sharing - not all 3G phones do." http://www.phonescoop.com/phones/finder_results.php?m=s&w=s&sao=y&f81r=r ... and if you click on a phone, 8 times out of 10, it will actually tell you: "for videocall" ... not sure what else you expect it to say? http://www.gsmarena.com/results.php3?sName=&idMaker=0&idAvailability=0&YearAnnounced=0&nPriceLow=0&nPriceHigh=0&idCurrency=0&idFormFactor=0&idDualSIM=0&idQwerty=0&HeightMax=0&WidthMax=0&ThicknessMax=0&WeightMax=0&idOS=0&idDisplay=0&idDisplayRes=0&fDisplaySize=0&idDisplayTech=0&idTouchscreen=0&idAccelerometer=0&id35mm=0&idCamera=0&idCameraFlash=0&idVideoRecorder=0&idSecondaryCamera=1&idExpansionCard=0&idGPS=0&bWLAN=0&bEDGE=0&bGPRS=0&idBluetooth=0&bIR=0&bEmail=0&bWAP=0&bJava=0&idRadio=0&bMMS=0&idRingtones=0&sColor=&StandBy=0&TalkTime=0&sFreeText= ... as you can see, this is old, old, old, stuff ... especially in cellphone lifespans. As usual, there is nothing new aside from a group of consumers that are about to get milked like a mother ... According to people in the know, Apple is going to have a massive RECALL on iPhone 4's! Yes, folks that's right. The sh*t has hit the fan and apparently Apple engineers are stating that they tried to tell Apple... If Apple does recall the new (er, old) gadgets - I'll regain a large amount of respect for them for swallowing their pride. Doesn't look like all those phones were available in the States, nor do I see a phone with video editing.
July 16, 201014 yr Doesn't look like all those phones were available in the States, nor do I see a phone with video editing. LOL, Cincinnatus, it's a moving target! I'm guessing TW and Apple must have recently teamed up and MTS is being paid to silence anyone who likes any other phone.

(seriously) I'm not trying to give Cincinnatus a hard time but find out more about phones. I like the iphone4, but if there a better toy...I want to play with it!

I like the iphone4, but if there a better toy...I want to play with it! I'd suggest you just go play with it. There are many great features on both phones. Android phones can do some things iPhones can't do, and iPhones can do some things Android phones can't do (right now, namely, video editing). I like iPhones, but I like Android phones better because they seem to catch up quicker when a feature falls behind the iPhone than vice versa.
July 16, 201014 yr MTS, I bought my phone from Dell. Either you don't like the answers we're providing for you or you are an extremely sheltered individual. Google helps those that help themselves.
July 16, 201014 yr Grumpy, you were right. I shouldn't have assumed Apple would remedy the situation correctly.
July 16, 201014 yr http://www.pcworld.com/article/201291/apples_free_iphone_4_cases_come_with_pinch_of_scorn.html?tk=hp_blg "Apple made no apologies for the iPhone 4's reception issues in a hastily-summoned press conference Friday. Instead of expressing regret, the company offered free bumper cases and full refunds to anyone who's not satisfied, and basically accused the press of unfairly pouncing on Apple's newest product." Maybe they'll release another software update which just almost shows max signal bars and they'll think that'll make everyone happy. Why fix the problem when millions of people will buy your defective product anyway?
July 16, 201014 yr For a "defective" product I really have had no issues with my phone. Best purchase I've made in a while (since I stopped buying crappy HP/Dell laptops and got my first MacBook Pro). Every day I discover something cool about the phone (just realized the screen dims when held against my ear and pops back up when removed). "Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago." - Warren Buffett
July 16, 201014 yr HTC that sounds like a brand for Stoners. They do seem to have some great phones though.
July 16, 201014 yr For a "defective" product I really have had no issues with my phone. That's good. You must be right-handed. When cars are recalled for being defective (such as Toyotas), often times it's not a very large percentage that actually sees the defect. Best purchase I've made in a while (since I stopped buying crappy HP/Dell laptops and got my first MacBook Pro). Every day I discover something cool about the phone (just realized the screen dims when held against my ear and pops back up when removed). Once again, I have an iPod Touch and I like it. Apple makes some nice devices, I'm not trying to discount that. But I like my Android phone better. I'm sure everyone's mileage may vary. What I'm tired of is Apple or users of its products passing off features which can be found on MANY other phones as "revolutionary". My Droid also dims the screen (and disables touch response) via a proximity sensor when I hold it to my ear during a call. In addition, it has an ambient light sensor so that I can turn my screen brightness to Auto and it will automatically crank the brightness up in sunlight and dim itself in low light to save battery (and eye strain).

Every day I discover something cool about the phone (just realized the screen dims when held against my ear and pops back up when removed). bfwissel, the dimming is also something that's been implemented for years. The reason is because folks cheeks dial numbers when they're on the phone. On most phones you'll notice a tiny sensor or dot ... if the phone is black it's because the glass covering is also tented. On some devices the sensor doubles as an ambient light sensor. Old, but good features. If you're a new(er) mac user I can understand your joy ... I've been experiencing that "joy" for years and years ... the problem is when you were used to that joy and then the iPhone came out. Same can be said for the iPad. The Droid X and Galaxy literally blow the iPad out of the water like it's nobody's business. How is that even possible? Like Jam stated ... there's def a problem, it's effecting tens of thousands of "customers." ... Let's not ignore that there is a problem (after repeated warnings: "Jobs, this antenna sucks, it's not going to work, it should not be made into the casing, people shouldn't be able to touch their antenna, etc.") ... and pretend that it's the user's fault. Are you saying it is the users fault, bfwissel? Notice that Consumer Reports purchased 4 iPhone 4's ... just to make sure. If there is any other doubt - we should probably just keep that cartoon video fresh on each new page.

Dude, it's fine. It's obvious you'd rather be vague and beating around the bush than be specific. It's cool.

Is there a specific question you have that you feel I didn't cover? I'm lost?
July 18, 201014 yr Are you saying it is the users fault, bfwissel? I think you're reading into it too much. All bfwissel was saying is that he has not had any problem with the phone itself. I haven't had any issues with my phone itself. I even tried to make the signal strength go down, but it didn't happen. By making this statement, I'm not trying to imply that some users are stupid. I'm simply saying that I have not experienced this problem myself. I also know several people with the iPhone 4 that have not experienced any issues the the antenna, either. I know that the iPhone is not for everyone, and that's fine.
