I decided to try to make my Blackberry 8320 lose bars just by covering the lower left hand portion with my hand. I was practically under a cell phone tower and right next to the airport (Lunkin) and get fabulous reception. It worked. I lost one bar right away. I kept the rest as long as I held it that way.

I tried that in the AT&T store, and I could not make the bars drop, though the salesman did. Different set up with the signal to begin with, but that was the outcome.

iPhone is just real popular, polished, well presented, and does a lot with very little trouble. Everyone else would love to have that kind of user loyalty. In the realm of smartphones, it's a real horserace. No one has the perfect phone, no one offers a great plan to go with it either.

I went to see the EVO a couple of weeks ago. There is a waiting list to get one as well. It's big and very attractive, easy to use (though not exactly intuitive). You can buy an extra battery to go with it for when the first one dies on you (it's $40). It does turn into a wi fit hot spot (for $30 extra dollars a month, that's not pro rated). There is a $10/month surcharge just to have an EVO. So now we are up to $80 extras for the first time around for a few extras. iPhone is also $30 for tether, but you can pro-rate with AT&T they told me (so if I am out of town twice a year and only need a week, I can have that).

I didn't mind the size of the EVO, but the screen does not have the color saturation and clarity of the iPhone. They don't really let you try it out for long in the store, you get a jabbering salesman attached to your ankle right away and he is banging on to the extent that you just want to bounce the phone off his head.  :yap:-youwantobuythisdoyoudoyouhuhhuhhuh?

So, I just left. I will go back again to take another look, but they make it a real pain to give it a good try out. I don't know anyone who has one that I can just sit and try for an hour.

Very true that there is no perfect phone and no perfect plan.  I went with the iPhone for several reasons.  Nearly everyone I talked with loved their iPhones.  Maybe two people did not.  Few people in Cincinnati had issues with dropped calls from AT&T, and a few even told me they felt the reception was better than with Cincinnati Bell Wireless (our previous provider).  I had few dropped calls with CBW.  It also seems that mobile phones are not made as well as they used to be.

My past two phones (a Nokia flip phone and a BlackBerry Curve) did not age gracefully.  I had to replace the flip phone after eight months, then the replacement starting acting up after another six months.  I knew people  using the same iPhone for years without problem, and many of Apple's products will last for a long time (our iPods have lasted well over four years, people have used MacBooks for over five years, etc.).  I know many people want a  new phone every year anyways, but I'm not one of those.  Now, before anyone gets upset, I do not know much about the quality of the Andriod phones.  I heard great things about them, so I'm sure they are fantastic as well.  I don't know anything about their life-cycles, and I am not making a comment about how they are.

Very well said.

Yes, here here! I just started a topic for smartphones because the name of this topic is "iPhone" and it seems that at least half of the talk is about other phones.

Like I said before, I am still trying to make up my mind on which one I want and I am taking my time because I like the process. I wish I had more experience with other phones but I don't. My friends who have iPhones also love theirs. I am glad to know that you are having fewer dropped calls with AT&T than with CBW. Actually, I am mildly shocked but that's just me.

I also had a Nokia flip phone ( which did age gracefully) and have the famous "tractor" Blackberry 8320. But I would like a phone that has features I can take advantage of fully. Right now, if I pay $30/mo for my data plan, I think I am using about $5 of it and CBW is laughing about that. How can I take advantage of getting on the 'net if I can't stand to stay there for more than 5 minutes?

I have an iPod Touch (2nd Gen) and it outdoes my Blackberry in all ways on the internet if I have wi-fi access. So, that is my advertisement for iPhone, the Touch is a very good introduction to the iPhone. Slick, reliable lovely interface.

Agreed!  Too bad the Ipod Touch doesn't have a camera.  The next generation of the itouch should be similar to the iphone.

Jam, can you run a speedtest.net speedtest from your Droid X for me? You're in Cleveland, right? Can you post your speeds here?

Melanie, can you download the speedtest app and run a speed test too ... make sure it's the one made by Ookla. 5 Star app.

Melanie,

I don't have beef with anything you guys are saying.

What I'm talking about is real-world issues and restrictions ... that's all. Nothing more, nothing less.

I believe you guys know folks with Apple products that have never had any issues, I'm one. I'm also someone that's had issues with some of their other products as well. Will I continue to purchase Apple computers? Yes, of course. Anything made on an assembly line will have issues.

The problem is having a product that has problems and then denying it, throwing a band-aid on it, or telling people they're holding it wrong. You and no one within 200 miles from Cincinnati's core may never have problems with their iPhones and that's great, but it doesn't discredit the users who shelled out hundre$ of dollars for their devices and are having problems with it.

My second issue with Apple and the iPhone is the time-line they implement features with how old the technology is.

Thirdly, is the restrictions. I don't even want to go there ... we've pounded this topic into the ground.

My experiences:

Time Capsule - worked great for a long time then stopped working. Apple replaced it free due to recall, just yesterday as a matter of fact.

Black MacBook - wifi network card's heat-sink loses connection when it gets warm, can't find wireless networks. - Network Card is shot ... don't know what happened. Superdrive works randomly.

17" Powerbook - replaced HD's twice ... stopped working and wouldn't boot up.

15" Powerbook - No issues whatsoever.

Old-School black powerbook with upside down apple logo - No issues.

iPod 80GB - No issues

iPod Touch - No issues

2 iPhones - No issues aside from a noticeable drop in reception.

- My experience with my 1st gen one was great, because it forced the competition to step up their game. It was revolutionary.

- My second experience was short-lived as the competition responded back, while Apple decided to not return the favor.

... you guys have to keep in mind, I've been using smartphones before smartphones were even standardized. I always bought the newest Palm device as soon as it was released and immediately had tethering set up with my cellphone. We're talking more than 10 years ago, by God I know what I'm talking about.  :yap:

When you get through with your speed tests, why don't you post them on the Smartphones thread? I bet there are a lot of smartphones out there which would like to get in on the contest.

1748 kbps down/809 kbps up

I think that this belongs here moreso than the smartphones thread as the speeds are related to the carriers, not the specific phones, and the discussion is pertinent due to the fact that the iPhone ties you to a specific carrier.

Also, Cincinnatus, I am in Cleveland but I do not have the Droid X.  I have the original Motorola Droid.

If I were to be acting 100% rationally, I would just say %$@#!it all. I am turning in my Fartberry at the end of my 2 year bondage to Cincinnati Bell, dig out my old Nokia, drop the data plan, and forget any of the bells and whistles a phone can do. I already have a perfectly good video/still camera, a nice iPod Touch which does everything I want and save a wad of cash every month. Do my podcasts through my computer (and my $3 microphone).

There isn't anything that a smartphone can offer me that I don't already have. Phfffft.

*OK, apparently I've inadvertently started something here, so I should qualify.  Other than briefly looking at other modern smart phones I really only have experience with the iPhone 4.  And to go even further, I only have experience with MY iPhone 4.  I can only speak to how cool the features are on the iPhone 4 are and how well integrated/designed they are with the phone (and with my laptop).  This is an iPhone thread, so I will keep my comments to the iPhone.

I have read some number of people are having issues with their iPhones (not sure how many, but given the relatively low percentage of return I read about this morning it must be a relatively few amount).  Given there is some evidence that some iPhones do not work well and media outlets are reporting issues, I will agree that there is an issue with some of the phones (or for some people).  However, I do not have any problems with my phone, and I do not consider it defective just because some forumers and the media tell me it is.  I hope this clears up any confusion.

*The opinions I express here are purely based on my experience and personal knowledge.  I am not qualified to speak to other people's experience with their smart phones.

jam, do you know if T-Mobile has launched the HSPA+ in Cleve yet?

Melanie & bfwissel, what speeds are you guys hitting?

In Cincy, in my house I'm hitting 4.6-5Mbps, but in Downtown the other night I hit 5.6Mbps ... May be cancelling my TW RR.

bfwissel, that was a good response. I think we're doing a good job keeping everything relative here ... I don't think anyone is getting offended, at least I'm not. Plus some of us are learning things too, especially MTS! ;)

MTS, can you hook us up with a "The more you know" gif.?

My parents got iphones yesterday.....  after my dad attended the Lady Gaga concert in St. Louis on Saturday.  I think the world is ending.

Cleveland is getting HSPA+ on Wednesday (July 21) the last I saw (which was about a week ago).  I have Verizon, though, so it won't help me.

My DSL at home sucks.  I rarely exceed 2 Mbps and my upload speed is ~384 kbps.  I need to be able to connect to my home PC often when I'm away from home, though, so dropping DSL won't work for me.

Honestly, I only use the 3G network when I'm roaming (in car or walking).  Otherwise, I'm almost always connected to WiFi.  When I get some time this week I'll try and get some speed test results for you, but generally speaking I don't use the AT&T network for data much.

"Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago." - Warren Buffett

I've notices with the HSPA+ that I never even use wifi at all now ... My phone's 4G speeds combined with Firefox provide an amazing browsing experience. When my network card went out on my Macbook, I was forced to use my phone and it wasn't even a big deal.

You folks on At&t have a great option about to become available to you ... the Dell Streak. I'd buy it in a heartbeat! 5" of pure bliss! It's unlocked, so it'd work on TMO too, but it only has the 2100/850/900 3.5G band ... You need 2100/1700 3.5G band to work with TMO's HSPA+ network.

If you haven't seen the Dell Streak, check it out!

BTW, here is the most recent Speedtest ... it's still fluctuating a lot, which is to be expected on a first-time launch. T-Mobile now boast the fastest data in the United States (just turned on 4G to reach up to 85 Million people), until Verizon launches LTE (taken from Prospect Hill):

My iPhone died on Wednesday, 10 days after the warranty expired. The apple store simply gave me a new one, no questions asked. That was a nice gesture, considering I just bought a Macbook after 20 years of PC ownership, and my finger was on the trigger to return it. (Didn't mention anything about that, though.)

They are pretty good about stuff like that.

My dads iMac screen had a burn mark and they replaced it with a 27" model.

They can afford to do stuff like that because you pay triple what anything they sell is worth in the first place.  Once you get 3 or 4 replacements, they start to lose money on the deal.

I would say you pay more like 1.5x the price you "should" pay for what you get.  But that means they have "extra money" left over to provide great customer service like this.  And that's worth it for a lot of people.  Personally, I'd rather save my money and take my chances that I'm not going to have every other computer I buy need to be fully replaced while still within warranty (actually I've never had this happen) or that I'll be able to keep the computer running nicely or fix minor problems with it, but I realize that (especially to people who don't work with computers for a living) that the comfort of a company replacing their machine may be worth it more to them.

Daaaaaaaaaaaaaamn!!!

T-Mobile's HSPA+ network seems to be getting faster and faster! We're now talking faster than wifi using Cincinnati Bells Zoomtown...

  • 4 weeks later...

I did get the iPhone 4 and I must say that was the right choice for me. I like the quickness of AT&T's 3G system (remember I was coming from EDGE on a Blackberry 8320 on CBW). I did already have quite a few apps from owning an iTouch, so I wasn't without basics, but I really love the array you can choose from, the price of them, and the fact that they work. I think Apple does a good job of vetting apps before you see them in the store.

The design and size of the phone are perfect for me. It's a bit heavy but not too much. The real glass and metal on it are wonderful. I have not had any antenna problems with it, and I did put a case on in (from Carrymobile.com which is a flip case and I highly recommend it).

AT&T has been great to work with. Very knowledgeable people in their Norwood store, great people on the phone, I can get into my account and check my minutes and data use very easily (CBW was a bit hard to get through to on that score). They even took my word for a promise one of the guys at the store gave me (waived the set up charge). How often does THAT happen?

My calls are clear.  I have had two dropped calls in the time I have owned the phone (> 1 month) and I can't say that I have had more than my Blackberry on CBW (I live near the Bermuda Triangle of phone coverage in Ault Park).

The e-mail is just as good as Blackberry's for my use, and it's real easy to send and receive photos, videos and any other jimcracks and gee-gaws that you want to send to your friends. I had a talk with a vendor recently and offered to send him a photo of a shipment right away! I could say that with confidence knowing I could actually take a picture and send it off without going through loads of reprogramming, suffering and madness.

The apps are really good because it seems like everyone has an app which works on iPhone, and it's cheap. Here are some of the ones that are useful for me:

Netflix-If you have a Netflix account and access to wi fi, this is the app for you. Free.

iMovie-Takes a bit of getting used to but once you get the hang of it, it's quite professional. $4.99

Weather.com

Camera+-You can't take a bad photo with this app, and you can do so very much with it.

Photobucket-Great way to take pics and send them off anywhere in lots of formats (like putting them on a forum like this).

Audioboo-Make podcasts and publish them, even on iTunes. Free and really good looking interface.

Atomic Web-.99 and a full throttle tabbed browsing experience.

Pano-Take panorama shots of your favorite sites. Works great.

Big Oven and AllRecipes-You can find out how to make anything at all for dinner. Every recipe you can possibly want is in either one or the other. If you are a woman who has to come up with great things for dinner, these are indispensable.

iBooks-There are plenty of free books here, if you like classics, you can have it all.

Where to?-What to do when friends and family are in town.

WordPress-Publish your inane observations on life here. Really great full featured app which allows you to do just about everything from your iPhone that you can do on your computer. Free.

Actually, the list is endless practically. I bet you can get some of those on Android Market, too.

iPhone just did everything so well and demanded so little of me that this was the best choice for me given that I need a phone which was easy to operate and had a lot of things it would do. When you run your own business, that is paramount. Fiddling with a phone, loads of extra charges, auxiliary equipment needs, and such just make an object that much less desirable.

Android phones have a lot to offer, too. Some of them I am sure can do things best of all the crowd, and if your carrier is the kind that you are wedded to, I don't think you would go wrong with an Android phone (like the Motorola Milestone). I am saying that for my needs and wants the iPhone delivers.

Excellent!  Glad it's working out for you.  The iPhone 4 is definitely a nice phone.

The point of my arguments was never to state that nobody should get an iPhone 4, but rather that Android phones have (IMO) become true competitors to consider.  Some people will choose them and some will choose the iPhone.  There's really not a wrong choice between the two.  The problem I have with Apple and Apple fanboys is that they want you to believe (and many people do) that Apple products are always are miles ahead of anything else out there, which surely isn't always the case.  They make a nice product, but are facing compeition these days, which can only be a good thing for the market.  For your personal choice it sounds like you did your homework, and that's great.

Thanks. I did do a lot of exploring first. I think the one I liked the best was the EVO (at the time it was THE Hawt Android using phone). The Milestone looks like something I would have gotten along with well, too. Lots of features and I think that CBW is a very very good company. I really don't have any complaints about them as a carrier. I had very few dropped calls and their service was at least very good if not excellent. The differences among carriers and smartphones is really marginal. I have not had anyone reliable say that they got a real junker of a smartphone (except one person who was not at all pleased with their Blaze from CBW), and don't know anyone rational who is dead set against ATT or CBW. I suspect that capitalism really does work.

Fabienne, I agree ... You did your homework and that's good. Not the choice I would've gone with and I'll make my case:

Data speeds on At&t compared to its competitors are between 2 and yes - even 4 times slower. You may say, "well, I don't browse the internet a lot" or "I use wifi mostly" ... that's great and all, but ... and a big but ... it's data plan is $15 more per month than its competitors and 2, it's limited to 2GB whereas its competitors are UNLIMITED. So, you're getting less and paying more? You'll have to forgive me, but I don't get it???

Secondly, if you must go with At&t why not the better phone on paper? The Xperia X10?!?

Tethering is not a privilege, it's there ... You own the hardware that enables this. That's like saying, I'll sell you this car and you own it, but every time you turn your AC on - there's a $10 service charge.

Does this make sense at all?

The die is cast now I own the phone and I am very happy with what I got. It doesn't matter to me if it's .0005 nanoseconds faster than something else. I am pleased with the speed I surf with. You just have a different set of needs and wants than I do for your phones. You love to fiddle with the inner workings of your phone, and for you your Nokia just makes you a happy phone guy. You can set it up just the way you like and code like mad. If you don't like something, you like to change it and that's great. Me, I do want to have a certain amount of things done for me. I am a practical coder/nerd sort. If it doesn't immediately impact my world, it's nice but I don't want it.

Android using phones are great. There is no doubt that they are quite spiffah. I would have been very pleased with an EVO and I do agree with the idea that tethering should be and was (at least with Apple and AT&T) a right, by Jove, a given birthright! But, they got wise to it all and they took it off and charged $30 for it (except for one clever Hans to secreted it in an app which was sold for about 3 hrs on the Apple App store as an innocent flashlight app and turned out to be THE EVIL FREE TETHERING APP IN DISGUISE)---bet you didn't know about that one. True.

I don't use tethering very much. So, it would be nice but if I use it about once or twice a year....it's not really a game changer.

When I was going to buy the phone, if I had wanted to buy a plan as inexpensively as possible, I would have stayed with Cincinnati Bell. The only real choices they had were Blaze (which had a bad review or two with friends) or Nexus One at $500+ up front, that was no bargain.

I am not doing too badly on the AT&T plan. They have a lot of things that CBW didn't have (like actually being able to talk to someone on the phone when I call...imagine that). I was happy with CBW and now with ATT. What is wrong with that? Nothing.

And...I don't get people who need unlimted data. WTF is up with that. What do you do? Play games all day long? Look, Cincinnatus, I surf the net and do all kinds of stuff that a normal person does and I don't use up my 2 Gigs. Just don't . Maybe I'm a grind and work too hard, but that's my life. I like it. I don't need unlimited. I had that with CinBell and used very little.

And, your icon. I really like it but but he is a Spartan (nude warrior carrying large round shield and spear wearing a Corinthian helmet=Spartan). Cincinnatus was a Roman. I like the warrior but implying that Cincinnatus a Spartan is like calling Davey Crockett an Englishman.

Pax, amore, et art histore. Everyone gets to buy the phone that makes us happy. I found mine, at least for the while. If you continue to dig your Nokia I am really glad for you. Phones are fun, useful and we are lucky to live in a time and place where we have such great choices.

Fabienne, I agree ... You did your homework and that's good. Not the choice I would've gone with and I'll make my case:

You need to be some company's Spokesman. You're too damn good at this!

^ Thanks, David. ;)

Fabienne, you just sold yourself...

"And...I don't get people who need unlimted data. WTF is up with that. What do you do? Play games all day long?"

Then why pay more and get less? That sucks.

So, why is it you need an app to tether again?

They have an app for that?

Exploring Cleveland culture: If you want to learn more about the history of cultures of Cleveland, there's now an app for that.

Mobile History Cleveland, an iPhone/iPad application, will be unveiled at this weekend's IngenuityFest 2010 downtown.

The app, designed by the Center for Public History + Digital Humanities at Cleveland State University, allows people to explore Cleveland history and the Cleveland Cultural Gardens while walking, biking or driving. Find the app at app.mobilehistorycleveland.org.

Just saw the other day on FB, that Cleveland Beer Week is developing its own app too.

MMMM Beer...

Actually, it was only one comment, and it was kind of a positive comment in a way, although dumb and incorrect.

What's everyone hitting?

What are you hitting, David?

Can someone chime in with VZW & at&t?

Can someone chime in with VZW & at&t?

VZW in Cleveland has absolutely sucked lately.  Believe it or not, this result is one of the better ones I got.  A few were down in the 0.3Mb/s range for downloads!

19496452.png

Also, I noticed that it is strange that the numbers don't match up exactly to what the app reads.  On my phone it said 0.61Mb/s download and 0.45Mb/s upload, and I am a lot further than 50 miles from Columbus.

I was getting 1.5Mb/s+ up until about mid-summer and it started getting worse and worse.  To make sure it wasn't my phone, I had another guy at work with VZW run speed tests and he was seeing the exact same results (and said he's noticed them being consistently piss poor lately as well).

^ That's because it's using a cellular server based on wherever verizon's node is. Mine does the same thing, speedtest thinks I'm in D.C., when I'm in cincinnati. So about 1.5 Mbps is what you've tipped out with using VZW? What phone are you using?

Motorola Droid.  I doubt it's the phone, though.  A couple times I hit about 2.2Mpbs.  My friend at work has the HTC Droid Incredible and is seeing the same thing.  It's been months since I've seen anything over 750kbps, though.

When I'm on Wifi at home, I get ~7.5Mbps (I have an 8Mbps internet connection).

My cellular speed using Verizon on a droid X has been less than stellar as of recent times as well.  Maybe VW is having a tough time keeping up with all the demand with all the android devices flying off she shelves??

That's what I'm figuring, too.

I had been rolling with a mytouch 3g slide for a few months now.  Loved that phone, but I felt the need for speed and used the wife's upgrade to land a G2 ;) for $50 on amazon.  She was going to get a slide anyways, so I'm not that bad.

Honestly, the slide was just perfect IMO in shape, size, weight.  The G2 is a little boxier, bigger and heavier.... but it is a huge step up.  The way the stock loaded google earth app works on this phone is insane.  I feel like one of those analysts on TV just flicking the globe around with my finger, zooming in on any given city... fully uploaded..... within seconds.

^ The G2 is slick,  and its only running a 800Mgz processor (iphone, droid x, evo 4G all run on 1 gig). The new google phone Nexus S is going to land on Tmobile soon so keep an eye out for that if you dont mind a touch screen keyboard.
