May 14, 201411 yr As far as residential population vs. commercial yes - no typical ratio could possibly exist. Obviously there are large all-residential areas in Greater Cleveland and every other area of the U.S. without stores nearby. However, Univ. Circle could use a decent menswear store. It would be about time. The Oakland area of Pittsburgh has men's stores and a lot of other commercial.
May 16, 201411 yr Does anyone here live in one of the uptown apartments? I'm taking a look at one on Monday. Curious what the acoustic isolation is like. I was told the earliest date for moving into the new building (which is all one bedrooms I think?) would be July 9.
May 16, 201411 yr How the Federal TIGER Program Revived a Cleveland Neighborhood Published on May 15th, 2014 Written by: Angie Schmitt Cleveland doesn’t look like a dying Rust Belt city these days in the Little Italy and University Circle neighborhoods. In fact, it looks like it’s thriving. At the corner of Euclid and Mayfield, a new mixed-use development — MRN’s “Uptown” — is filling out, hosting a bookstore, a bakery, bars, and new apartments. Just across the street, the new home of the Museum of Contemporary Art sits gleaming, in the words of the New York Times, “like a lustrous black gem.” Another major office, retail, and residential project is planned a stone’s throw away. http://usa.streetsblog.org/2014/05/15/how-the-federal-tiger-program-revived-a-cleveland-neighborhood/

May 16, 201411 yr Piccadilly Artisan Creamery Introduces Cleveland to the Next Big Thing in Ice Cream Last night, brothers and business partners Adrian and Cosmin Bota unveiled the latest concept for their homegrown Piccadilly Artisan Creamery. Piccadilly's third ice cream shop, located in University Circle across the street from the Cleveland Institute of Art, introduces Clevelanders to the coolest trend in ice cream. "We can make ice cream or yogurt on the spot in front of you to whatever specifications you want using liquid nitrogen," Adrian explains. Piccadilly University Circle is an "a la minute ice cream parlor," where ice cream is made to order using an ultra-cold churning process that employs liquid nitrogen. "There are about 25 or 30 of these kinds of places scattered around the country," says Adrian. "We think it's going to be the next big thing." http://www.clevescene.com/scene-and-heard/archives/2014/05/16/piccadilly-artisan-creamery-introducers-cleveland-to-the-next-big-thing-in-ice-cream piccadilly artisan creamery unveils concept behind new university circle location http://www.freshwatercleveland.com/devnews/piccadillyartisancreamery051614.aspx
May 30, 201411 yr Someone told me last night that ABC closed. I was just there on Saturday. There wasn't a ton of people but I chalked it up to a holiday weekend. Also, I had planned to go to Cleveland Beer Cellar after ABC, but it was closed. The coolers were all full of beer, but they were closed - at like 9:00 on a Saturday night. Not sure if that is permanent or not, but I would have to think so if they were not open on a Saturday night.

Waited at the bar for maybe 10 minutes and though it wasn't crowded, I never got any service from either of the bartenders. I thought to myself that would never happen on W 25th...shoulda knew something was up.

I've been through/past there at late hours and it seems to have a strong pulse. It would really be too bad if ABC is indeed closing because it seems to provide more of a visual impact than most of the new establishments there.
May 30, 201411 yr ^^Just Googled ABC as well as checked their website, below listed, and there's no indication they're closing. Let's hope this is just a false rumor. http://www.abcthetavern.com/contact.html

Agree that that's an odd time to be closed, but pretty much every bar in America loads the coolers as soon as they lock the doors. Believe me, I know..... As you say it was a holiday weekend. They may have been dead and closed early. Not a good business model IMO, that early anyway. But it happens.
June 3, 201411 yr Question that I've been trying to figure out for a bit. What does the "UARD" stand for in the thread title?
June 3, 201411 yr ABC was open Friday night. I took a couple of pictures, but they didn't turn out well.
June 3, 201411 yr ^ Sounds like I got some bad info! I mentioned it to my bro in law last night who is in the industry and he did say there was no way they closed - we'd have heard about it from local food writers.
June 3, 201411 yr Question that I've been trying to figure out for a bit. What does the "UARD" stand for in the thread title? I think it's the University (Circle) Arts and Retail District.
June 24, 201410 yr Schimoler to Open Crop Kitchen at Uptown; Matt Anderson to Come on Board as Partner Posted By Douglas Trattner on Mon, Jun 23, 2014 at 4:48 PM Chef and owner of Crop Bistro Steve Schimoler has announced plans to open Crop Kitchen in the former Accent space at Uptown in University Circle. The space has been vacant since Scott Kim shuttered his Asian-fusion eatery there last fall after one year in operation. The team is shooting for a mid-September opening for Crop Kitchen, starting first with dinners and then later adding lunch service. http://www.clevescene.com/scene-and-heard/archives/2014/06/23/schimoler-to-open-crop-kitchen-at-uptown-matt-anderson-to-come-on-board-as-partner
June 24, 201410 yr ^I hope Crop makes it. It has a great reputation and great following, and as owner Steve Schimoler noted, Accent had neither. I'm not sure the newness of Accent was relevant, though, as I think Accent's lack of the aforementioned factors killed it... The real question is: can another high-end restaurant survive in an immediate area dominated by college kids and surrounded by college bars, an ice cream shop and typical college-y chain fast-foodies? Let's hope so.
July 16, 201410 yr Skimmed through the last few pages and didn't see a mention of it, but Cleveland Beer Cellars is out of business. A "for lease" sign is now in the window. Didn't even last a year, which is a big shame since they really did have a nice atmosphere and extensive beer list. Sad to see so many businesses here closing up so quickly.
July 16, 201410 yr They need to get the right retail/restaurant mix. The larger spaces cannot be cheap.

A poster above mentioned it a few months ago. I think he confused Cleve Beer Cellars with ABC The Tavern when he noted he'd heard an Uptown bar had gone under... Too bad; nice (very large) space, but the 2 times I went by there, including a Friday night, the place was empty.
July 16, 201410 yr ^^^^Not sure I really agree. Even with these closures, the number of establishments at UC is still higher than it was pre-recession. We're talking about growing pains for brand new retail space, not the failure of established businesses. And the number of yuppies in Cleveland Heights grew substantially between 2000 and 2010 (http://blog.case.edu/msass/2013/02/14/Briefly_Stated_No_13-02_Mapping_Human_Capital.pdf). The foreclosure boom there was fairly heavily concentrated in a few primarily working class African American neighborhoods. [Whoa, I see I was late to this response party!]

I think the problem was people brought food from outside or their "partners". You could drink well, but no food to keep people there.
July 16, 201410 yr Keep in mind that Uptown is not a reinvention of an old neighborhood, like we've seen happen in our other more popular hoods. It rose out of the asphalt and is going to have some serious growing pains. The influx of new residents once construction is complete will help, as will a year of CWRU students getting to enjoy it without construction barricades and hazards.

July 30, 201410 yr Hmmm...nothing online that I can find on a phase two...is this the first we're hearing about it? So that's the parking lot west and Mi Puebla east of Euclid 115.
July 30, 201410 yr ^^ I met with the developer about 2 years ago when he was looking for financing, and devleoping the lot was always in the back of his mind, after the renovation and stabilization of the apartment building, but not officially planned. So, yes, this is the first we're officially hearing of this. He had a few ideas, so I'm very interested in seeing what he's looking to put in there.
August 18, 201410 yr I got a chance to see a few areas of Phase 2 today, mostly the rooftop and future corner alley space.
August 26, 201410 yr A Sneak Peek at Happy Dog at Euclid Tavern, Set to Open Mid-September Posted By Douglas Trattner on Tue, Aug 26, 2014 at 10:50 AM In November of 2013, the owners of Happy Dog — Sean Kilbane, Eric Williams and Sean Watterson — announced that they would be opening an eastside version of their popular Detroit Shoreway bar and restaurant in a space that rivaled the original in terms of full-Cleveland charm: the Euclid Tavern. "What I love about the space is that it's not all big box and shiny-new," Williams said at the time. "The Euclid Tavern is lived-in — it's got some history and life to it.” The Euclid Tavern closed in 2013 after more than 100 years of on-again, off-again operation. The historic University Circle club with the iconic neon blade sign has been host to countless local, regional and national acts. Live music scenes in the 1987 film "Light of Day" with Michael J. Fox and Joan Jett were filmed there in front of local crowds. August 26, 201410 yr A sign is up in the retail space in phase one down from Moca announcing "Chapati," a new Indian restaurant coming soon. Well it'll probably be better than "Naan" in the new student center.

Well it'll probably be better than "Naan" in the new student center. You don't like "Naan?" I had it Sunday night and I thought it was bangin'. I'm Desi (South Asian), and it wasn't spicy enough, the basmati was overcooked, the cauliflower was undercooked, and the lamb wasn't tender. Also the naan itself was another $1.25 ontop of the meal, when it should be included. That-place-on-detroit, the name always escapes me, is usually where I go if mom's cooking isn't available. :p

August 27, 201410 yr I think Zak[/member] is referring to Indian Delight near Gordon Square? Yes indeed. But we're getting way off track. I heard rumblings of a FedEx store 'round these parts, too, but that was from a 3rd-hand source.

I do know, though, that the CIA kids have already moved into the Phase II dorms ... which led me to believe the photo is real... but maybe it's not.
