I don't travel Midtown so much, but do go by CSU and the transformation and density of CSU's new "college town" is amazing, esp after The Edge massive dorm/mixed use building has gone on line... I can only imagine when the PHS apt tower goes in.  I do believe, however, that the Red Line (heavy rail rapid transit) is the main reason for the intense density at Uptown -- MRN's Ari Maron said as much... This is why I so often get upset when I think of how Mike White, Tim Hagan and NOACA (No Action back then) so foolishly threw away the Dual Hub subway line proposal.  Under then RTA's (Ron Tober's)  timetable this line would likely have gone in by the early 2000s and would have had much more impact than the current HL...  The PHS, CSU Midtown corridor would likely look like Toronto's Younge Street corridor had our leaders not been so short sighted.

Cleveland needs to focus on these types of developments before worrying about highrises IMO.

Cleveland needs to focus on these types of developments before worrying about highrises IMO.

Developers are focusing on these types of developments outside of downtown. Downtown the problem isn't that 'Cleveland' is focusing too much on highrises it's that parking lot owners are convinced that it makes more financial sense to keep their land as a parking lot for now and hold out for a highrise in the future than it does to build a midrise today. Which absent changes to our tax system it probably does.

I already love Uptown but it's going to be amazing when development pushes further north with the CIA dorm going up north of the school and CWRU doing something with the CDC lot. When that parking lot across from Constantino's eventually gets filled in it's going to be hard to remember that I'm in Cleveland.

In either case the street level is what matters most.

But just like in Major League, there is no such thing as too high.  Too high?  Multiple developments in this area were forced to reduce their planned height and that needs to stop.  This doesn't mean shorter developments are inherently bad, but anti-height activism most certainly is.

Cleveland Yoga is closing the Uptown location.  I guess they're back to being Suburban Cleveland Yoga.

To Cleveland Yoga’s Valued UPTOWN Community:

There is no easy way to put this.  It is with great sadness that I announce the closing of our Cleveland Yoga UPTOWN location.

Classes and operations will be held as usual over the next two months, with our final day of operations being Sunday, April 29th.

As our initial lease term is coming to an end, we have made every effort to renegotiate our lease with our landlord.  We requested and offered many creative solutions to make our rent structure more in line with market rates and industry standards, but it has been to no avail.

I want to take this opportunity to thank our entire Uptown community; our students, teachers and staff. I am very proud of the amazing community that has grown out of the Cleveland Yoga Uptown presence over these last 5 years in operation. More than anything we value the wonderful relationships we have built with each of you over these years and we look forward to continuing these into the future.

First and foremost, please know that we are working to ensure that our teachers and staff are taken care of.  We are already solidifying new time slots for our Uptown teachers in our other Cleveland Yoga locations in Westlake, Beachwood and our new sister studio, Cleveland Barre (also in Beachwood).

If you are a pass holder or CY Member, all passes are honored at the Uptown studio until April 29th. Please come, get on your mat, and attend as many classes as you can to share your practices and your memories. As always, your passes will continue to be honored at our Cleveland Yoga Beachwood & Westlake locations.

If you frequented our Uptown location and need an auto-renewal canceled, a class pass extended, or have any pass-related questions at all, please email [email protected].

As any other information unfolds over the coming weeks, we will update you through emails, social media pages and our website.

We look forward to seeing you in and around the Uptown studio as well as our other locations during this transition phase.  Please feel free to reach out to me personally if you have any questions on this at all.

With much love and respect,

Namaste,

Tami

The median between Chester and MLK on the north side of Euclid has been fenced off and many large trees have been taken down -- anyone know what's going on?

Edit: I was thinking of something else. Oops

That’s a huge loss of trees, though

The median between Chester and MLK on the north side of Euclid has been fenced off and many large trees have been taken down -- anyone know what's going on?

This is another sewer district project and it'll be fenced off for around 2 years.

These things are popping up everywhere, usually on former commercial parcels. Not a fan of them from a future development standpoint. But how its that surprising for a city that can't seem to look past the current situation of things...

Coquette Patisserie To Say “Au Revoir”

To our loyal customers:

We have some news to share with you. We’ve decided the time is right to bring the bricks-and-mortar chapter of Coquette Patisserie to a close.

The commitment and sacrifice required to nurture and grow a hospitality business are hard to quantify. While raising two young children, we’ve given everything we had to Coquette to help make the up-and-coming Uptown District of University Circle a destination. We remained committed to our concept: to offer the highest quality product, unparalleled craftsmanship, and the most remarkable experience possible. We couldn’t be prouder of what we accomplished; but, after careful evaluation, it’s time to end this chapter.

Thank you for your belief in and support of a business that grew from a college student’s dream to an amazing adventure. Your belief in us was nothing short of amazing. You embraced a concept unlike any other in Cleveland and always trusted us to challenge your palette with highly innovative and precisely composed food. Time and again, your encouragement and patronage made the investment into this small business so rewarding. Being part of the last four years of Cleveland’s history has been a privilege.

In honor of you, our loyal customers, we will host a day-long celebration – “Un Fête d’Adieu” – on our last day of business, April 28, from 10 am until midnight (or until the shelves are bare). We invite you to savor one last taste of Chef Britt Culey’s sweet treats and savory creations at the shop.

If you’ve placed a custom order for a private event following the closure of the pastry shop, there’s no need to worry. All orders placed by April 28 will be fulfilled. Gift cards must be redeemed by close of business on April 28.

While it’s time to close this chapter in the story of Coquette and take time to determine what the future holds, we hope that if Coquette returns to Cleveland down road, you’ll consider giving us another try.

From the bottom of our hearts…Merci Beaucoup!

- Britt & Shane Culey

New fitness center coming to Uptown

Jahci Perry-Richardson, News Editor • April 27, 2018

This summer, 121 Fitness’ Uptown Cycle will take on a new location in Uptown. The larger space, which was formerly occupied by Cleveland Yoga, will allow the fitness center to incorporate features including locker rooms and more equipment, both of which its previous location on Euclid Avenue, next to Mitchell’s Ice Cream, lacked.

Mota explained that 121 Fitness’ new location and larger facility will allow University Fitness Centers to serve a greater portion of the community. Currently, 121’s Uptown Cycle only offers cycling classes, and the new facility will expand its fitness class offerings.

“We want to find activities for every person to enjoy,” said Mota. “Our main goals are to engage our community members in many different ways and create a super strong family among all our clients.”

The new location will accommodate lockers, showers and space for 121 Fitness to implement various fitness, health and wellness programs and services. Some of the classes offered will involve high intensity interval training, yoga and Reiki, in addition to its current cycling classes. Massages, personal training and spa services will also be available.

Corner Alley is closing this May

Just found this:

Corner Alley Uptown to close in late May; owner says bowling alley isn't profitable

The developer behind the Uptown project in University Circle plans to close the Corner Alley, a major retail anchor in the district.

MRN, Ltd., the family-owned real estate company that also owns and manages the Corner Alley, said the business started off strong in late 2014 but simply isn't profitable. Bowlers will knock down their final pins at Uptown in late May.

...

MRN plans to break up the space, on two levels with a prominent entrance at Ford and Euclid, into four storefronts. A taco-and-tequila joint, from the owners of Tres Potrillos in Beachwood, will be the centerpiece. The developer also has preliminary agreements - letters of intent - with a bank, a cellphone retailer and a fast-casual restaurant that would be new to the market.

Here and in FEB, it seems like these gigantic bars need to be packed constantly in order to pay the rent on their spaces.  It might not be a workable model.

Excellent point... it's better to frustrate a few people that may not be able to get in occasionally than to have constantly underutilized space.

The problem is it's not a "nightlife" area. Corner Alley stood alone. The east side could use some nightlife, and being that it's literally a college campus, you'd think they could support at least some of it, but alas, no nightlife.

I was only there 3x. But everytime I was there the place was packed.

I was there only once on a snowy weekday night in February and it was nearly empty. The place had a ton of old video games on the second floor. I was surprised such old games were there, and a lot of them didn't work/ate my quarters.

Remember: It's the Year of the Snake

Is there a board somewhere that vetoes Cleveland art installations that aren't menacing enough?  This one looks like a tribute to Evil Dead 2.  I'm a fan of horror movies but I'm not sure that's the civic theme we need to pursue.

Judy’s Hand Pavilion arrives at Toby’s Plaza as part of citywide contemporary-art exhibition

JULY 3, 2018

Over the past week, a new public art installation has taken shape at Toby’s Plaza: Judy’s Hand Pavilion, part of this summer’s FRONT International: Cleveland Triennial for Contemporary Art.

The piece, designed by Chicago-based artist Tony Tasset, is a silver hand that stands at about 25 feet tall and 7 1/2 feet from the heel of the hand to the ground. At the wrist, it is approximately 10 feet wide. Its exterior is fiberglass, while concrete fills the fingers.

The sculpture is intended to double as a public shelter and gathering spot on Toby’s Plaza, an open space made possible by the support of alumna Toby Devan Lewis, a local author, art curator and philanthropist.

I admire the concept. Unfortunately, the hand formation is menacing. I wish the hand was in a more relaxed position. I do fear it will be referenced to The Addams Family.  It  could have been interesting to have changed the form To Rodin's Thinker's feet.  It would be a nod to the missing feet from the damaged sculpture outside of CMA

Piccadilly Artisan Creamery moves into former Coquette space in Uptown

Updated 6:13 AM; Posted 6:12 AM

By Nikki Delamotte, cleveland.com, NDelamotteUllmanCleveland[/member].com

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Ice cream, coffee and patio lounging is poised to be the recipe for success for Piccadilly Artisan Creamery in Uptown. Stroll through the district these days and you might notice something just a little bit different. The ice cream shop, opened in 2014 by Adrian Bota, has moved down one storefront to take over the space formerly owned by Coquette Patisserie at 11607 Euclid Ave.

Since the Parisian cafe closed its doors earlier this year, Piccadilly plans to fill a bit of the niche it left. The shop will soon be serving pastries and coffee through a partnership with Cleveland's Vintage Tea and Coffee. Expect to see espresso, cappuccino, pour overs, green tea lattes and more in the coming weeks.

"Coquette had a good clientele that was coming in for coffee, tea and pastries, and we wanted to continue with some of that," Bota says. "We want people to see it as a third space where people can come and enjoy ice cream or have a meeting and a cup of tea or coffee and croissant. We wouldn't do that when Coquette was next door, but now we can become a little more of a one-stop-shop."

Anyone know what's going into that space next to BiBiBop? I believe it was the old First Merit space. Every time I come from work I see the dumpster out and a crew inside clearing the space out, but no "coming soon" sign.

On July 18, several properties transferred by quit claim deed....

I'm trying to figure out what's going on here. These are all now owned by principals of Bluewater Capital Partners LLC (ie: Michael Cantor and Russell Lamb) but no money changed hands. Instead, it appears that the rights to develop the parking lot at the corner of Euclid/East 115th and the former Circle Vistas building next door transferred from Beresch Development Partners LLC to Bluewater. The reason why this may have happened is that, apparently CWRU declined to exercise its option to buy the former Circle Vistas (now called Euclid-115 I) which it was entitled to do five years after CWRU sold it to Beresch in June 2013:

https://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2013/06/developer_buys_former_disabled.html

Anyone have any better information. Perhaps this means that the long-awaited second phase, Euclid-115 II, will be built?

With the rents you could fetch as a developer at such a centralized, primo location, I would be absolutely shocked if they only built two stories.

That does seem ridiculous, under the circumstances, though the Forbes' house is almost across the street.

As I mentioned previously, the space next to Potbelly had construction going on but I could never stop to see what it was for, well now I know. It appears that the mysterious "cell phone company" is Verizon. Verizon is returning to Uptown, hopefully, for a longer period of time, this go round.

Is University Circle a boomtown? These two images suggest that. The first one is from 2006. The other is from 2017. The "Uptown" area is actually comprised of multiple projects by multiple developers, not just the major one with the brand name Uptown by MRN. You can see other buildings built by CWRU, CIA, Midwest Development Partners, Berusch Development Partners, etc. The buy-in to this area has been huge and it continues. BTW, this attractive density and mixed use would not be possible at this scale or speed of development without the presence of high-frequency transit, including a $200 million investment in the Euclid Corridor in 2008 and $40 million for two new Red Line rail stations in 2014 and 2015, one of which (UC-Little Italy) is in a completely new location and is continuing to spawn lots of spin-off development.

I intentionally left these images large so that you can see the detail in them...
