A co-worker just called Jimmy John's corporate about one of the nearby stores and found out they are planning on opening a store next year in the location where the old McDonald's and Mr. Hero's used to be.

Welcome, Ohiocort! And thanks for the info. Definitely an upgrade of food options!

I was on Euclid Ave today and I noticed what looked like some preliminary construction on a big vacant building across the street from Lake View Cemetary, on the Cleveland/East Cleveland border. Anybody know anything about this?

who are all these new people with good information?  anyone else noticing this?

I saw that to. They have a fence around the perimeter of the building.

Pictures of the area you're referring to? Or something to Google Maps?

I don't know the exact address but its on the same side of the street as the Cleveland Free Clinic. There's the Free Clinic, a dingy old strip mall, and then this gigantic warehouse looking building that I'm talking about, right before you get into East Cleveland. Here's the address to the Free Clinic for using Google Maps. Hope this helps.

Now for new construction instead:

Gee, I'm sorry to hear there's no progress, no new construction happening in Cleveland.... :)

Does anyone have a link to the renderings of that project?

totally awesome

Does anyone have a link to the renderings of that project?

They are posted at multiple points within this thread.

I just came across this and I don't know if this has been talked about before or not but I was curious about this project. Apparently, the Circle Vistas Apartment building on Euclid Ave close to the Uptown development has been bought by CWRU and Circle Vista is going to build a new, much more aesthetically pleasing apartment complex in another nearby location for the handicapped residents that live in the current building. Does anyone have any updates about when the construction of the new building begins or about what CWRU's going to do with the old one?

From their capital campaign booklet looks like they have almost all their financing lined up, but I'm not sure when the booklet was released and if they've since raised the last couple hundred thousand.  Their plan looks great.

I have a feeling these could turn out really cool looking, or completely hideous

Again note the map everyone.

The new Circle Vistas will be built on E.115, freeing up Euclid Ave for additional mixed-used expansion.

Is Circle Vistas the old brick security building?  If so, what is the purple building on the NE corner of E115 and Euclid?

That's part of Uptown.

I like how that graphic shows the guts of CIA.

To elaborate on KJP's answer: yes, the existing Circle Vista's is that old brick warehouse thing, and the new building shown at that corner is a possible future phase of Uptown, but nothing yet definite.

I really look forward to an article next year to this effect: Phase I of uptown is fully leased with a waiting list even before the first tenant moves in and MRN will announce plans for future phases in the near future.

Does anyone know if the Barnes & Noble plans are still very viable? With all that's been going on with the big-box bookstores, and B&N's own problems, I'm wondering if the chain is actually adding stores.  If it does get built when is the Uptown B&N scheduled to open? Is it to be on the Art Institute side? I have seen their stores in similar districts in other cities but am wondering....  A lot of people are also under the impression the time seems right for a new interest in the indie bookshops.

I think this B&N is different because it's a campus bookstore. Those seem to be doing well, or at least holding their own.

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

Presently B&N is profitable; the problem is much of the money is stemming from the success of the nook, which, when you think about, doesn't require an entire big box store to carry. I suppose there may be a symbiotic relationship - people wouldn't buy the nook if they weren't enticed by going to B&N in the first place - and if B&N physical stores folded, the nooks might then take a hit as well; hence, the stores stay open. Hopefully.

According to the construction workers, the B and N will be on the northside of Euclid... Other side of the street from CIA.

The B& N is to be a campus store? I've seen those, and the one by CSU (do they still run it?) is quite small and has a very minor collection of general books. I was thinking in terms of this being one of the large, general-collection B&N's.  I've been at the one in Boston (Huntington Avenue?), for example, which is located near a university yet is a full collection on many floors with escalators.

Wups - I don't see that large store on B&N's website.  Either it closed or it was a Border's!.... I have seen multi-story B&N's and for years had imagine that as being a good example.  It was right by the Howard Johnson's hotel and a major intersection called [?] Corner(s?). College area and near the stadium.

The retail space at Uptown won't be that big for any store.  Seems to me that the footprints won't be much larger than the size retail we see on Coventry.

It was mentioned to be a 2 level store tht would go into Uptown.

^Ugh, thanks.  I somehow missed that.  Panera and B&N Campus are better than parking lots, but not exactly a thrilling start to the retail lineup.

Well there are still strong rumors of local celeb chefs opening up spots (on the southside of Euclid/alleyway).  That could be a huge plus as well.

And Constantino's Market.

^Yeah, I'm still super pumped for the project overall.

It would be nice if it was a huge bookstore, but even so, this is going to more than double the quality of the food and retail options in that area. Can't wait.

Just saw simple version of this by Oberlin College - on E. College Street to the east of the restored theater. There are, I think, two new buildings of three floors, I believe - retail first floor, apartments above.  There's a new and expensive ice cream place and I think a pizza place. Also another shop - is it DVDs?  Paperbacks? Can't recall.  Anyway, the overall image to me is something that goes with a college town and, in this case, it expands one of the two main streets for that college community.

Just saw this on Scene.com, should be a nice fit for the college students, and good to see something local going in!

East Side Outpost of Popular ABC the Tavern in the Works

Posted by Douglas Trattner on Fri, Sep 23, 2011 at 3:14 PM

Alan Glazen has just signed a lease to open an East Side outpost of his popular Ohio City bar ABC the Tavern (1872 W. 25th St., 216-861-3857). Slated to open this spring, ABC will be located in the new Uptown project in University Circle, directly behind the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA).

There really aren't too many casual "pub" type places anywhere in the University Circle and Cleveland Heights area. I suppose there are Winking Lizard and McNulty's on Coventry, or Kobalt and Tavern Co. on Lee Road, but nothing like the plethora of pubs as seen on the West Side and Lakewood. ABC sounds like a nice addition to University Circle. I wonder of Dim and Den Sum is considering a move to Uptown.

I like ABC... but I'm confusted as to it's planned location... where is "directly behind [MOCA]?"

They are building that "alley" on the back side of the Uptown apartments on the south side of Euclid.
