I'm considering "liking" Ken's comment :D

BTW, since the UptownCleveland website is still "coming soon," this may be our best way of obtaining project updates.

Yea I am just not a fan of the blue. Pink Flamingos and gold balls on the lawn space would be just around the corner.

That's crazy that they would have a facebook page rather than their own webpage with info, even if its a page on their main site. Comes off as very unprofessional. Its like the practice of having to log into facebook first to send a non-facebook related comment to someone.

Looks like the Verizon wireless store is going to be open soon.

I feel like a Verizon store is a waste of space there. Wish something better would have gone in there.

It's not sexy, but I'm kind of happy to see some non-food/drinks/entertainment tenants move in.  If we want full-functioning residential neighborhoods, we need the boring stuff too.  I guess Constatino's might fill a lot of this void, but if I were a resident in that area, I'd be clamoring for a CVS or something for my day to day household needs.

I agree big time with the neighborhood stores. Verizon doesnt fit this for me though. Thats like a once every two years type thing.

^That may be true but it is like the license bureau...it is always packed with people who only go once every two years (at least the Verizon I currently go to is).  It is a people magnet and hopefully those people will patronize the other stores when in the vicinity.

And don't forget, CWRU draws a HUGE number of international students (last I checked, CWRU undergraduate alone comprised of all 50 states, 83 countries...).

This students arriving for their undergrad, masters, and doctorates usually need to get an American number, and generally do not arrive with a car.  I personally see it as a genius location for Verison.

Btw if that's going to be a direct Verizon wireless store and not an agent, it will be packed from day one. It will generate a lot of foot traffic.

Actually, I have to disagree. A Facebook page is much more informal than their own website. And if you look on facebook, there is not much on the page. They just want to keep people interested with some sort of connection. I have a feeling they are not ready for a full website, as that is something that needs to be near perfect, unlike Facebook.

Not true. One can easily put up a 'one-page' static web page with some basic info. I'm not sure a full blown-out site is necessary anyway. I doubt most buildings have them. Companies, yes, but not individual buildings. (I know, its not one building.) But if they wanted to promote the project, they could easily put up a simple site with certainly any info that one could put on facebook.

Agree wholeheartedly.  In our trendy/hot neighborhoods: downtown, U. Circle/Little Italy, Ohio City, Det-Shoreway, Tremont and Shaker Square, ..... only Downtown and Shaker Square have a drug store (ie CVS, Rite Aid or Walgreen's), and both of those close by 8p (6p on weekends, downtown.)....  While I love the fancy, diverse restaurants, our hot neighborhoods tend to be a little unbalanced.  Supermarkets (which most have) are great, too, but 24-7 drug stores, with their diverse products and services, are really important ... even though not "sexy".

I mostly agree, although DS does have a drugstore. I'd really like to see this development fill in with more "Revcos" and less "izakayas".

Perhaps.  But at least this shows that national chains find value in the area.

It makes perfect sense to me. You have foreign kids (who need us phone numbers), American kids (who tend to break phones), and a large group of adult professionals.

From talking with my cell phone company friends after market accessories make up a pretty good chunk of there revenue. At least at the Verizon stores I've been to in the past year. They are also selling iPad and competing brands in store.

If you had to make a list of a neighborhood's basic business needs, would you put a cell store? I would.

A shot from past MOCA on 2/7/12:

Thanks for sharing!

I stand corrected; you're right, there's a Rite Aid (I believe) on Franklin & 65 just a block from Gordon Sq.  Thanks for the correction.

  • 2 weeks later...

I wonder if Lot 45 will hurt Uptown's phase 2. Maron has to act on options to buy the land by sometime in 2012. And i keep hearing that the rents still don't seem high enough to merit new construction for the heights called for in Uptown's second phase.

I've never seen an image of phase 2 before this

^Except its still lacking color and would get lost the first foggy day we have.

^Circle 118 provides all the color we need along this strip of Euclid.

^and CIA's expansion

Me neither. The design for the corner across from MOCA is pretty innovative!

That's awesome! Coolest apartment building design I've seen for Cleveland. And it works, since it's across from something even more unusual, and not far from the crazy CWRU Business School building and Seidman. Nice.

Phase II is a draw-dropper!  I pray something like that can get built!

btw, I went past the site today and noticed that interiors for both Barnes & Noble and Constantino's appear close to completion; near ready to move in furniture -- some counters, in both, are already in place, I think (not easy to see when behind the wheel, dodging hail stones and hustling home to beat the larger storm)... Barnes already has signs posted outside.  Sorry, no photos...

Hell, we might as well post it, along with the nearby Mayfield underpass by the planned and funded Red Line station. They are not proprietary images.....

excuse me while i salivate

I know CIA is supposed to have a video wall...  but if uptown phase II is anything like that...  it has to have a large digital sign.....    but I'm for digital signage everywhere....

^ The glitz and glamor of UC :D

...as the saying goes: an embarrassment of riches.  This is a neighborhood feeding frenzy of development Cleveland has not seen for a loooooooong time.  The good news is that it's dense, urbanized, transit and pedestrian-oriented like Cleveland simply hasn't seen.

It's not just good news, I think those two facts are directly related.

after phase II and lot 45 are up...  UC would be a great location for a medical murder mystery...  :)

awesome -that has a slick euro feel. and its grey with a red gesture, which is a very cleveland palette. loves it.

Re KJP's post above, I know that image is from the report or somewhere, not by KJP, but its labeled wrong. Its not the "New York PATH Terminal" (PATH=Port Authority Trans Hudson), its the "Port Authority Bus Terminal". (The Port Authority is a bi-state NY & NJ agency) Its the main bus terminal in NY where buses from Jersey come into the city. (The Port Authority also operates a second terminal uptown, but much smaller, in Washington Hts.) This one is in Midtown around 42nd and 8th Ave. The image is of the roadways over 9th Ave. as they lead into the terminal, as they come out of the Lincoln Tunnel.

The term "PATH" refers to the train operated by the port authority that connects NY and NJ. It runs nowhere near the Bus Terminal shown above, and is, on the NY side, completely underground.

There are pretty big physical differences between the NY example and Mayfield Rd's RR underpass that make it difficult to be as dramatic at Mayfield: height of the bridges, ownership, quality of bridges, change in topography and affected view sheds.

Phase II lost a lot of the design quality from the original plan to me. Still impressive in scale if it gets done.

Original design:

^I think the northern buildings (including the one in your post) were originally to be designed by Office dA, but now Saitowitz/Natoma is designing it all.

I really don't like that rendering

To each their own.

I definitely prefer the new rendering, with the round part.  That would fit nicely with the rounded building across the intersection.

I have no idea how seriously we should be taking that rendering at this point...but I'm fine with it, even if I would prefer a tad more color.  All else equal, though, I think it would be better to see a second designer's work here for a little more variety in materials, detailing, etc.
