Yeah, I wouldn't count on any vertical additions.  But hopefully we get more height in the next phase.  cleanup, I would definitely be interested in seeing the plans if they're easy to post.  Would also love to hear your impressions of the building and neighborhood once you move in too. This building is kind of the first of its kind in urban Cleveland, so a lot of folks are watching closely to see how it performs.

Sure, I'll attach them below. I am a bit wary of being a guinea pig for the growing pains of what is, for Cleveland, a new thing, but it was as close as I could get to something I'm used to here in Toronto while staying close to the Case campus. If Case was downtown, I'd surely be living in one of the already-established condos/apartments downtown. I hear they're close if not even cheaper to lease, as well.

Hey cleanup,

Have you visited uptown or was this all done over the phone?  I walk/work by it all the time and have been in the north buildings.  The leasing agents said that there are already people living there.  I was there this past sunday and it looks like the north building is finished, when I had visited to take a look, it was still under construction.  The south building is still not ready- there are still those portable cranes, lots of the area is fenced off, but I can see the interiors from the street and they look mostly complete.  From what I remember, they said that the south building should be done in late June/early July.  So you should be OK.  You better be OK because I'm moving there in July too and I prefer not to be homeless.  The hallways are huge- they're tall and endlessly long.  I'm not too worried about the lack of elevators- it's just 3 floors so unless I am carrying an obscene amount of groceries, I'll take the stairs.

Did you sign the lease?  I haven't signed the lease yet- they cashed in my deposit and said once move-in comes closer they will have me come over and sign.

As for not having a car... ouch.  University Circle has its bright spots and you'll be fine there.  But there are a lot of other areas to explore and public transportation is not like in T.dot.

I haven't signed my lease yet either; they did cash my deposit as well and basically told me the same as they've told you. I wish they were a little more communicative or had more information for us, though, since I have a very specific move-in window (mid to late July) and am bringing all of my things from Toronto; it's going to be an orchestrated chaos making sure everything goes as planned. I definitely prefer not to be homeless as well, particularly as I know no one in Cleveland and I'm not even a citizen!  :-o

The first floor apartments are not potential elevator users though, so there are really 2 elevators for 70 apartments, which is much better than the 3 elevators for 34x5=170 potential elevator users in your current building.  Then factor is that many 2nd floor dwellers likely won't use the elevator, as well as the fact that the elevator trips are shorter in a building with much less height, and I think the elevator situation shouldn't be a problem.

That's true; forgive me for forgetting that. I'm used to highrises, where the first 2-3 floors have no residents on them and pretty much everyone uses the elevator (though, really, up to floor 5 or 6 taking the stairs is really not a chore at all).

Though I did notice on the floorplans, which I've attached, that the staircases are only at each end of the building and I'm not sure if there is secure access for these, since it seems as though they might lead outside directly, like fire escapes. So you might be able to exit out of them but who knows about entering from them?

Note: the floorplan is for the 2nd floor of the south building. I was told the 3rd floor, at least, is the exact same, though.

Anyone else think that Clueless just has a bunch of hidden cameras all over the city that he can pull from whenever someone needs some photos?

Lol. It is pretty sad isn't it. Ha!

Wow, a George Forbes citing!  This Constantino's will be a major boon for him/his family as his 20-year-old Mcmansion is just a few blocks away... C's looks pretty neat; busy... Great stuff, Clueless.

Awesome, thanks.  It is totally weird there aren't stairs right off the main lobby.  Kind of annoying, in fact, but pretty minor.

And I wouldn't worry about being an experiment.  The building itself, and the neighborhoods it's in, are great.  It's just the market for new build at those price points is a bit untested in our urban neighborhoods.

As for not wanting to deal with a car: this would seem to be a perfect spot for a couple Zip Cars.  I know there are a couple downtown near Cleveland State, but anyone know if there is still car sharing in UC?  It's almost an expected amenity now in many cities...MRN should be beating down ZipCar's doors if they aren't already.

The Barnes & Noble at Case Western Reserve University will host a book signing with Christopher Busta-Peck on Tuesday, May 15, at 7 p.m.

Busta-Peck, the founding editor of the Cleveland Area History blog, recently released the book Hidden History of Cleveland.

Note the late start time of 7 p.m. The Barnes & Noble is located on Euclid Avenue at East 115th Street.

There were formerly shared cars in the neighborhood, but not anymore.  If I remember correctly, the company went out of business?  Maybe somebody else can confirm.

Thank you for those who have PMed me. You guys are fantastic and are exceptionally friendly.

I agree that ZipCar would be great, and know they have a programme down at CSU. I was under the impression Case was a much smaller school, though, and it's just a bit less dense in UC? Personally I'd love to have the option but I can see that it might not be that economically viable until University Circle as a whole becomes more dense and owning a car becomes less practical.

Time out!

Cleanup is a new member to this forum, and he has had a rather harsh welcome.  Let's treat him or her with respect and a welcoming attitude.

Cleanup, we really try to keep the threads on topic, and keep side conversation to a minimum.  We have the private message feature, which is encouraged to use.  The mods and admins can't watch all threads at all times, so often long time members will help us out with a respectful notice to get back on topic.  We also have the button to report a post to a moderator.  So if the respectful notice is out of line, the admins have ways of dealing with people.

Since you are new, and have had a rough time so for, please use the report button liberally, and I will follow up.

Everyone else, just chill.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I'm not looking for trouble. I honestly think my post was on-topic and relevant, and "rude" is in the eye of the beholder, but I know that the born-and-bred Clevelanders on this forum have a lot to be proud of, and that's often a good thing. So I don't hold it against anybody; I only don't appreciate my words being taken out of context, turning me into something I'm not. That's exceptionally frustrating. I'm trying to contribute and become part of the community, not only here on UO but in the future in Cleveland itself. I'm looking forward to it. I'm not trying to take anything away from anyone or dumb anyone down; if it appears that way I apologise. However, I don't believe that the risk of offending some of the prouder members of UO precludes me from being able to talk about myself, where I'm from or what I think. On that note, I agree with Pugu. However, I do think that everything people say on this forum should be done with respect and tact. It was not my intention to antagonise, but it appears as though others do indeed have that intention, out of some possibly misplaced sense of righteousness. I'll be the first to say that I don't appreciate it, but I'm trying to look beyond it.

Big thanks to those who have given advice, wise words, photos, and friendly PMs.

I'll do my best not to cause any trouble in the future. Let's move on.

A question that I do have about living in UC or about the Uptown development: are there any plans for a drugstore/CVS type store going up? If not, what's the closest thing nearby?

Condo with 35 floors??...Where exactly do you stay...Chicago?

Toronto. Certainly not the tallest in the city by any means. Just down the street Canada's tallest residential tower is being built. 78 floors.  :-o

Wow impressive....well welcome to Cleveland hopefully you enjoy your stay and when you move into Uptown you can post personal interior pics to give people who can't afford it (ME) a sense of how it looks.

I don't know if you've seen them, but there are some photos on the Cleveland.com blog, but these are early; there are no countertops, appliances, etc. Not sure what else might be missing.

Thank You! I like it with that modern look it's really unique so since those are earlier pics are the walls still white now or has it been painted?

Yeah, I'm definitely interested in seeing more interior photos as the units get finished off.  MRN's web site for uptown is still pretty bare-boned which I'm interpreting to mean that they've being seeing a steady stream of inquiries so haven't seen a need to invest more in marketing.

A question that I do have about living in UC or about the Uptown development: are there any plans for a drugstore/CVS type store going up? If not' date=' what's the closest thing nearby?[/quote']

There used to be a drugstore on Cornell and Euclid, I think, but I'm not sure if its still there. That corner is just a few blocks away towards Downtown.

The only one I can think of is E. 79 and Euclid

The Rite Aid on Chester and 105th would be a little closer.

A nice drug store in the heart of UC would be high on my wish list if I lived in Uptown, Little Italy, or one of the other new UC housing developments.  Hopefully we'll see one again at some point.

Am I totally making it up? I thought a drug store was in the works for the north side of Uptown at some point?

Sure hope MRN can secure Phase II financing before phase I is complete.  The gap between the south pavilion and E. 115 is quite large and, as much as I like the buildings going up, still gives the area an unfinished look. ...

I understand the criticism of the low slung nature of Phase 1, but I do like the drama, driving westbound, of Commodore Place, to a lesser extent, University East rising up in the background to the north and south, respectively...

Folks, some posts have been removed - some for their abrasive tone, others for further derailing the thread. No one's being singled out, just keeping things 'tidy'. If there are concerns or questions, anyone is free to create a thread in the 'Forum Issues' section.

cleanup, welcome to the forum and to Cleveland - sorry for your bumpy start here, but I guess that can happen when you have people who are passionate about their city. That said, if you wouldn't mind - please post any future relocation-specific questions in a thread in 'City Life'.  http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/board,30.0.html

Back to the construction (or recent events like the book signing Murray Hill referenced) :-)

The apartments still look like that- all white and gray floors.  It's all white Bosch appliances.  Every time I drive by, it looks like progress is being made- so I don't think future south side tenants have anything to worry about.  I'm gonna drive by it on the way to work tomorrow.

So those photos I showed above actually show the countertops as well? What are they made of? Any idea?

countertops are corian.

Corian and white appliances are sort of '80s, aren't they?

I am curious what the board thinks regarding which of the next phase buildings SHOULD be built and which WILL be built.

I would imagine most people want the building at the corner of Ford and Euclid next since we all hate that parking lot, it is such a prime location and the conceptual design is kinda unique (not to mention taller).  However, I really think the last building slashing by the MOCA will do much to frame the museum and I would really like to see those buildings on E.115th torn down and uptown expanded east.

My best guess as to what WILL be built is the MOCA building since it does not involve demolition and is the smallest of the three buildings (cost and financing always being a factor).  Maron seems to be more of a practical developer and moves more in baby steps.

I'm clearly in the minority here, but I actually like the look quite a bit, especially for a rental unit.  And beyond the finishes, I like the dimensions and proportions of the main living area.

^^Which buildings on East 115th?  I would love to see more infill in that direction, but I don't want to see the older apartment buildings demolished.

I have no sense at all what's next for Uptown. Phase I required a lot of subsidy, but I don't know if that was really because of the projected economics of the project, or just the lack of confidence in those economics by equity investors and lenders. But assuming similar subsidy is needed going forward, one has to wonder if there is enough public money lined up for immediate future phases, even if leasing for phase I is brisk.

This?

In case of interest, I stumbled upon some more photos of Uptown's interiors: http://www.markusbischoff.net/2012/04/uptown-cleveland.html

I know it's not for everyone, but I think it's a welcome addition to our rental housing stock.

Really liking these. With some good furniture, plants, etc. the rooms will look great imho. The minimalist treatment (distant placement of couch, coffee table and lounge chairs)in the first interior pic isn't really doing the place any justice.

Appliances are white, most likely to save on cost. These are rentals and have to be somewhat affordable. Only other option is black and they would really stick out then. Stainless would be extra $, which would have to be passed onto the renter.

Most likely it's laminate flooring. From the professional photos I can see some good grain definition and variation. It's not the cheap stuff. What would someone else propose?

Walls are white, yes. When is the last time you moved into a rental with all of the walls painted different colors? If you have moved into such a place, the landlord most likely took the security deposit and pocketed it instead of painting the walls back to white.

With the discussion mostly focused on interiors, here's an update on an exterior feature of Uptown...the Constantino's signage has been replaced with a bolder and heavier sign. Looks better.

Good! That other sign kind of looked out of place. The new sign is a huge improvement.

It looks like that earlier sign was a just a vinyl version of the new raised sign ... Maybe because that one wasn't going to be ready for opening?

Thanks for the pics -- the new signage looks much better.

So anybody heard firmer dates on the Uptown opening of Chipotle, Panera, and Sawyer and Kim places? I thought some of the sit-down places were to open mid/late Summer???

MRN has been leading edge in their actions to transform two key neighborhoods in our town - and thanks to them for that - but their PR/web/social media work to keep us informed and get us excited has been anything but - a big turnoff... I'd expect more - especially with a young Mr. Maron helping to run the show....

on 2nd thought, MRN has probably been too busy choosing the color scheme of the apartments to tweet...

I took some simple pictures of the inside of the north building and some of the appliances.  The fridge is not bosch.

I like the lighting, not so sure about exposed concrete.  They will let you repaint some of the walls, but you have to paint it back to white at the end of the lease if white is not your color.  The kitchen counters are not granite.  I'm no interior decorator, but it seems like it is a treated surface.

Thanks for the photos, lonely. What's up with the windows? Are they not providing blinds/shades?

I only ask because on the Saitowitz designer's website that someone posted previously the windows evidently had shades installed above them, but in this model suite it doesn't appear to be the case.

I hate modern architecture and I don't think the interiors look that bad.  Definitely an 80s feel.  Not really my taste, but as many have pointed out, our market needed to offer something like this for those who want it.  If someone proposed replacing all our remaining brownstones with this sort of thing, I'd be all pissed off.  But otherwise it's a nice addition to our range of choices.

Drove by today....more and more I am not liking the parking on Euclid in front of the apartment buildings.  For some strange reason it seems to take away from the buildings and streetscapre more than street parking in other areas.  Maybe it is because the sidewalks are so narrow.  Really can't figure it out but something just seems wrong.

A timeline and location update for Accent:

This September, chef Scott Kim will open his second restaurant in Cleveland. The Pan-Asian restaurant, to be named Accent, will be housed in one of the new buildings as part of the much-anticipated Uptown development at Euclid and E 115th, near University Circle.

Accent will reside in the unique egg-shaped enclosed space at the end of the corridor adjacent to the Cleveland Institute of Art.  The signature red back-lit design will create a sexy and inspiring ambiance for the location. The space will also feature a large outdoor dining patio complete with a fireplace to extend the outdoor dining season.

Whats being built at the lot across The Uptown project? Foundations are already being put in it. It's not the lot at the corner of E115th and Euclid though

We went to the Hessler Fair last weekend, which was as good as ever and perhaps had the most booths ever (plus the very busy Harmonie Park). It seemed strange; I went through the little bit of woods to get to what had been sort of a mini-park and walked right into the Uptown parking lot, behind Constantino's.  Put me into a whole different perspective.... Whereas I was trying to decide what Fair food was worth it (and not that much was but there were some choice items, as usual), I went right into Constantino's, which has an abundance of riches, and got one dinner item there. It was great to see that, unlike B&N, Constantino's is open very decent hours.

I was curious about the parking lot during the Fair hours. It had been my second choice for parking, but we got a space in our first choice - to the rear of Church of the Covenant (like last year - amazingly close and there actually was not a sign in the exact space we took). But I was very curious about the Uptown lot. It was nearly empty, so I was wondering if Fair people could park there or what. I knew most wouldn't know about it. I saw a Police car at the entrance but couldn't tell if he was keeping people out (i.e. asking what they were there for - Constantino's?) or just guarding. If it was reserved for store customers I thought that would be rather mean-spirited, at such a time as the Hessler Fair; afater all, we visitors had lost that whole free lot by the former McDonald's (where we had parked for years but my wife actually got something at McDonald's). No, I didn't feel like askin' the cop but I wonder.

nehpets19: What's being constructed is a new building to replace the one next to it on Euclid - Circle Vistas.  It's institutional housing.

Htsguy - are you referring to the street parking in the vicinity of MOCA or University Hospitals? When I've parked there and then walked around to see the new construction I've thought of myself as very lucky.  Free parking right there. However, I don't expect any of this to remain very long.

Does the above illustration of Cotman mean the current building on Euclid is to be demolished?  It doesn't look too hot but it could be fixed up. Again - I hate to see anything from pre-WWII go.
