January 17, 201312 yr I heard the deal for Sawyers's restaurant fell through and he won't be opening anything in UC anytime soon. Ugh, I hope that's not true. Or if true, I hope he finds another space for that project.
January 17, 201312 yr After discussion/announcement of Uptown location last year, Sawyer has been in print in recent months noting he was still looking for location or at least not naming it... but wanted it to be/said that it would be close to his home (in eastern suburbs). From those comments/other social media comments about areas & restaurants his family likes or frequents, I'd bet it could be anywhere from, say, Cedar-Fairmount to Cedar-Lee to even Chagrin Falls (where there is a prime, to-be-redeveloped former Mario's Spa building that has been rezoned and is ready for redevelopmenet as upscale restaurant, per the owners...). I would assume an older, rehabbed, building would be his choice, given Greenhouse history...

January 17, 201312 yr The parking lot is now fenced off and the view is blocked by black fabric from the road. No real work yet, just some of the concrete parking barriers removed and occasionally someone in a vest wandering around the area. This has slightly worsened the already tight parking situation for non-garage commuters at CWRU. The parking for Uptown itself seems adequate for now. Is this for the following phase at the corner of Ford and Euclid. I was unaware that it was already starting. If so, that's awesome news!
January 17, 201312 yr I was just about to ask about the progress on ABC the Tavern's uptown space, but according to their facebook page, looks like they're aiming for a March opening. Has anyone sneaked a peak of the build-out? Will be interesting to see how they turn modern, glassy space into a tavern. Can't wait to hear future tenant announcements about Phase II. I'm still hoping for a pharmacy or other daily needs type place to serve the nearby residential base.
January 17, 201312 yr At uptown, Mitchell's Ice Cream is fairly far along. ABC is less far along but build-out is definitely well underway. Just based on looking in the windows/doors.
January 17, 201312 yr "Trentina" - Sawyer's stated restaurant name - was filed as business name with state of Ohio last week... though this doesn't tell us much. http://www2.sos.state.oh.us/reports/rwservlet?cert&PRM_DOC_ID=201301100883

January 18, 201312 yr Is the Euclid Tavern still open? I could see Sawyer doing a music venue restaurant mash up

January 19, 201312 yr Hmmm pretty sure. Stopped in earlier. Awesome place, great vibe, extremely busy. ;)
January 21, 201312 yr Mitchell's Facebook appears to indicate they opened in the last day. I was there last night. Unfortunately, there were about 30 people in line in front of me.
January 21, 201312 yr Open, picture taken 15 minutes ago. Nothing says ice cream like a 15-degree January day in Cleveland! (OK, I had some ice cream last night) "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

January 24, 201312 yr ^^ Don't judge... the Urban Ohioan came out in me and I felt it my duty as a Coventrian resident. And their Peanut Butter Milkshakes are delicious!
January 31, 201312 yr Abc tavern uptown announcing march open. Outdoor patio outlookin MOCA, bigger bar than wet 25th
January 31, 201312 yr Some work appears to have started on Uptown Phase 2 as of this morning: Thanks for the pics! So I assume all was approved by the city?
February 1, 201312 yr "The other round" in city planning is just to appease Clmn Conwell. CPC will pass this easily and they are annoyed by Conwell. Conwell was trying some grandstanding that did nothing but make him lose respect amongst all that hold any power, big or small, in City Hall.
February 4, 201312 yr The Phase II signage is now up, "opening in 2014" and including new student housing. Here's a quick snap from a few minutes ago:
February 4, 201312 yr Yep, looks World Class to me! ;) "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
February 4, 201312 yr Thanks Scifience! Construction fences are always a great sight, especially if they tastefully hype the coming attraction (take note other developers!!).
February 5, 201312 yr Yep, looks World Class to me! ;) I wonder what percentage of UO readers get that joke. :)

February 5, 201312 yr The steel tube there is the temporary casing that they use for drilling caissons, and the rig that is set up there is a drill rig for drilling the caissons (foundations). Therefore, I woudl say they are started! On a side note, I like how they left the asphalt for now to drill the foundations. I always reccomend that to the contractor for the caissons to keep them out of the mud. Can't do it for spread footers or matts however.

I tend to associate them with much larger projects like towers and bridges.

I tend to associate them with much larger projects like towers and bridges. I'm not a structural genius, but I wonder if it is because of the soil conditions there. I had always heard that Lake Erie's shoreline used to come up to this point. That's why they call it the "Beach". Supposedly, the soil is much sandier on this side of Euclid Ave. Given that the structure will be 8 stories and the supposed sandy conditions, maybe that's why caissons are necessary??
February 5, 201312 yr I can vouch that the soil in Hough mostly sand, it would make sense that UC would face similar soil conditions.
February 5, 201312 yr For multi story buildings carrying decent dead loads, it is very common to drill caissons versus conventional spread-footer (houses/restaurants etc sit on these) or matt foundations (high rises or buildings that transfer large dead loads). The caissons are then conected with concrete grade beams. And does soil suck in UC, I wouldn't say taht, however there is alot of questionable fill material that is encountered to fairly deep depths. If you find virgin ground in UC which is hard to come by, you will find that the soil is just as good there as it is in Strongsville!
February 5, 201312 yr ^This got me thinking (the fill material comment). Does anybody recall what building or buildings existed on this corner at one time? For the life of me I cannot recall any. Always remember it as a parking lot and I go pretty far back (went to Case law school in the early 80's which is just a couple blocks away down Ford).
February 5, 201312 yr I just took a look on historicaerials.com, and believe it or not, the NE corner of Euclid and Ford was already parking in 1952. The rest of the Uptown site (north and south of Euclid) looks like it was sf homes and small apartment buildings, as you'd expect.

February 6, 201312 yr I just took a look on historicaerials.com, and believe it or not, the NE corner of Euclid and Ford was already parking in 1952. The rest of the Uptown site (north and south of Euclid) looks like it was sf homes and small apartment buildings, as you'd expect. I asked my father (lifelong Clevelander, born in 1929) what was there and he couldn't remember for sure, but he thinks that single-family homes (probably large ones) were there at the NE corner. His memory is much more vivid of what was around the intersection of Euclid and East 105th. He just turned 84, and can tell you exactly what his favorite meal was (cheeseburger and a vanilla milk shake) at the soda fountain in the Walgreen's drug store that was on the ground floor of the seven-story apartment building on the SW corner. He used to have lunch there before seeing Saturday matinees in the Loew's movie theater across the street with his high-school buddies in the mid-1940s. What he remembers..... BTW, I thought you'd all get a kick out of this stylized view of the old Uptown Theater in Cleveland..... February 6, 201312 yr Looking at old maps it appears there was nothing there even back to 1912. In 1898 there was a house there set back with the property as wide as it is today and extending all the way back to Bellflower. That was before Hessler Street even existed.
February 6, 201312 yr Not to get too far off topic, but my family owned the Costello's music at 1993 E. 105th from 1950-1973ish.
February 6, 201312 yr Huh? Hessler was there in 1989. Or do you mean 1889? "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
February 6, 201312 yr Huh? Hessler was there in 1989. Or do you mean 1889? Woops, I mixed up all of those numbers when I typed it out. I fixed the original post. Thanks for pointing out my mistake so I could correct it.
February 6, 201312 yr Also the property was owned by Horace Ford, which makes sense if you just look at the street its adjacent to.
February 6, 201312 yr No problemo. I wasn't my usual annoying grammar correction I put on others! :) "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

Correct, Horace Ford: http://www.historicmapworks.com/Map/US/1248207/Plate+024/Cleveland+1898/Ohio/ http://www.historicmapworks.com/Map/US/1248208/Plate+025/Cleveland+1898/Ohio/ Cozad, Wade, and Ford owned all the surrounding land -- NOTE: you can also see the "Circle" that named "University Circle"
