Following the lead of New York City, which last week became the first major U.S. city to ban artery-clogging trans fats from restaurants, Cleveland City Council on Monday unanimously passed a resolution encouraging a ban here. The council measure does not carry the teeth of law. But it notes that trans fats contribute to heart disease, and it asks the city health department to work with the Cuyahoga County Board of Health to ban the fats from restaurant menus. Trans fats are derived from partially hydrogenated vegetable oil, a chemically altered substance used in cookies, pie crusts, pizza dough and a variety of other baked and fried foods. The artificial fat has been demonized because it raises bad cholesterol and lowers levels of healthy cholesterol, leading to heart disease. Bad cholesterol deposits plaque in arteries, while good cholesterol "is like garbage trucks that go around and suck up plaques from the vessel walls," said Dr. Leslie Cho, medical director of preventive cardiology and rehabilitation at the Cleveland Clinic. December 19, 200618 yr people are outraged because they don't realize that trans fats are industrially created chemicals that don't exist in nature. The average joe just hears trans fats and thinks they are trying to ban unhealthy foods in a Big Brother type nutrition police. It is just a PR issue. While there are many artificial compounds used in food, the ones that are proven unhealthy and dangerous shouldn't be permitted in food, just like dangerous natural compounds shouldn't be allowed in food, ex. uranium, lead.
