With the latest censes poll, Elyria is the 13th largest city in Ohio. But yet it gets very little recognition. I live here and I see so much potential. Our shopping area(the midway mall section) is very nice and has increased dramatically in size over the past 5 years. We have the #1 ranked community college in the state(which by the way offers so much for such a low cost). And our downtown is pretty amazing considering the population of around 60,000 people. Nice new residential developments are being constructed at a good pace. And not to forget to mention we have an amazing park system(cascade park) with two beautiful golf courses on the outskirts of it, which allows a breathtaking scenary. I figured if Elyria is going to get any attention, I minus well be the one who gets it off foot.

Welcome! We've heard of Elyria, but only one forumer (mrnyc) ever has any information for us. Any information you can pass on would be welcomed!!!

I'm glad you mentioned population, it is interesting that Elyria (56,000) passed up both Kettering and Lakewood since 2000.

We'd love to see any photos you've got!

Elyria has a potentially wonderful downtown, with the square and all.  Keep us informed!

I like Elyria.  The Washington Blvd. area north of Downtown is nice, as is the little area to the south.

I do know that Elyria recently opened up a brand new 8 story courthouse and a renovated City Hall.

welcome, take some some pics and post them when you can.

i got a few relatives in elyria and i'm an lccc alum. great school, great profs, i enjoyed it. in fact my first for real job the summer after hs was busboy at the midway mall bob evans - hows that? heh.

i'll say this, elyria is certainly nicer looking than my town, its ghetto twin to the north.

Where's Elyria at again?  8-)

Since they removed the courthouse tower!

How/when did that happen anyhow?

I'm glad you guys are interested in Elyria! I work a lot, but when I get a chance I will post some photos for everyone to see. I'll show you a side of Elyria (almost no one knows about). We have a great history and anyone living here should be proud.

Can't wait!

I got so tickled when I read that statement.  I haven't been so folded over in laughter for a while.

Supposably, some people are more orientated towards phrases like these. Irregardless of what tact he takes, I await his reponse with baited breath.

.

(wild applause).

You're a good sport Jake.

Welcome!

I like the name Elyria... I named one of my best SimCities Elyria after looking at a road map for names... must have a good vibe.

^ funny!

fyi it's named after illyria, a province in austria, but i believe its the name of an ancient greek city as well. not sure anymore.

i do know its hard for some people to pronounce. my college roomate from pittsburgh used to call it EL LEE RYE ah. i couldn't argue that. however, the locals say EE LEAR EE ah or sometimes AH LEAR EE ah.

a funny trivia thing is elyria had thee most ghetto zoo in the world. it was one miserable black bear stuck in the side of a cliff in a cave cage in cascade park. unbelievable. i think thats long gone now....i sure hope so.

Elyria is a city in Lorain County, Ohio, at the forks of the Black River founded in 1817. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 55,953. It is the county seat of Lorain CountyGR6. Elyria was founded by Heman Ely and named partly after himself and his fascination with the Austrian province of Illyria, having been acquired by Napoleon in 1809 during Mr. Ely's visit to Europe [1]. The city is home to Lorain County Community College and the headquarters of Invacare and Ridge Tool. The Elyria High School Pioneer Marching Band is a source of pride for the community.

------and yes that zoo is long gone, but the bear's ghost still remains

Elyria's a nice town......the only thing that bothers me is seeing that ugly transformer-power station from Route 2..........just makes things look grungy......but then again, that is the big-box-store area :)
