here is a thread that is focused on combined sewers and water quality issues:

Aren't there also issues dealing with permeable concrete and its ability to stand-up to NEO winters and seasonal swings?  I thought I have heard some concerns about this in the past.

A preliminary planning study has been done on the proposed Mather House.

This is all I have regarding the project.

Why is the turnaround necessary if there is already a covered entrance to the side?  It seems a shame to cut up the nice front lawn.

You are correct and it has been addressed. Like I said, preliminary.

Good to hear!  It's exciting to see the Mather put to good use!

Not the biggest secret in the world, nbut it got press.

CSU to open child center

By SHANNON MORTLAND

1:46 pm, August 14, 2007

Cleveland State University this Thursday, Aug. 16, will open its new Child Development Center.

The center, at 2428 Chester Ave., will be managed by the YMCA of Greater Cleveland and will provide care for children age six weeks to kindergarten.

Priority for care will be given to Cleveland State students, faculty and staff who have children. The center will be open to the community on a limited basis.

Musky, do you know what CSU's take on the Quadrangle's idea to cap the Innerbelt is?  And if it falls through, is CSU open to capping the portion that runs through campus?

good lord, six weeks? mom is really rushing back to work.

Musky, do you know what CSU's take on the Quadrangle's idea to cap the Innerbelt is?  And if it falls through, is CSU open to capping the portion that runs through campus?

CSU believes it is in the community's best interest to, at the very least, create infrastructure during the reconstruction so that when the time comes and funding is available in the future, it will be easier to create.

The minimum build should consist of an expansion of the decks on Euclid and Prospect Avenues. This appears (without any market study to back this up) to be the most logical "scar healing" caused by the Innerbelt's original construction.

Wit the current proposed alignment, the portion of the freeway that runs adjacent to the campus will not allow for any capping or development. This area is the only spot where vehicles will be able to enter and exit the freeway.

But anything is possible.

FYI:

CSU is presenting the new Student Center at tomorrow's Design Review Committee meeting It starts at 1:30 PM in Room 514 at City Hall.

On Friday, there will be a presentation for the Planning Commission at 9:00 AM in the same place.

Charles Gwathmey design for new Cleveland State University Student Center off to a strong start

by Steven Litt

August 16, 2007 01:30AM

Cleveland State University has been saddled for decades with a harsh, defensive, inward-turning campus that treats the city like hostile territory. Now it's about to make its biggest stride yet toward openness, transparency and architectural distinction.

A proposed new $50 million student center, designed by New York architect Charles Gwathmey, should give Cleveland State something it has never had -- a strong, assertive, memorable building open to the city and campus on all sides...

Any resemblence?

Here comes the "save the cage" movement

i think my issue with the structure is that it shouldnt have any brown in it.  it would look so much more interesting with a really dark grey put there instead, but then again thats probably dealing with materials and whatnot...

Any resemblence?

Seriously??????

Well, I suppose I can take something out of my ass and stretch it in photoshop to make it look like anything I want too. sheeesh!

Anyway, Design Review was today. Two motions (Demolition and Schematic Design) were introduced and passed unanimously. One commission member asked if he could be the first to strike a blow to the building during demolition.

After the meeting, I was treated to lunch by Mr Gwathmey at Bo Long ( along with my boss and three other architects).

oh no it's awful too, i dont like it at all.  its no good for the csu campus to update itself in 70's-80's bgsu revival style.  :|

here's some more renderings of it on the website, the rest of their ed work is no great shakes either:

http://www.gwathmey-siegel.com/portfolio/proj_detail.php?job_id=200606

I see the resemblance, and I kind of like it.

I'm sorry but that building is ugly enough to make me love the Main Classroom Building.

Steve Litt:

Hates the new Case dorms and loves the CSU Student Center.

I don't think I like it, either. I really like the criss-cross grey curved thingee at the top. Otherwise, I think it's horribly boring.

I really love the plaza that goes with the building, though. You can kinda see it here but better on their website:

0606_r06.jpg

^are you talking about the plaza behind the building? That was built about 2 yrs ago.

The pink, green and grey area?

If so, yes. I like it.

yep, that's the one. Its a very nice space.

I think the problem that I have with the overall design of this building is it says "Student Center" a bit too obviously to me. I'm not sure how they'd improve on that, or even if that's a bad thing necessarily, but .. I dunno. I just want something .. better. Something more reflective of CSU's vision and expansion for the near future.

These old 1960's and 70's architects love showing the 80 degree angle view from above to show their supposedly interesting "form parti" when in reality nobody will ever see that view unless you're flying 2000' on a Fox News helicopter.

For everyone who has/had a problem with the design, you should have come to today's meeting (or sent me an articluate letter that could have been submitted during the process - I offered that to everyone months ago when I post the 50% SD), but you did not.

Today the planning Commission approved with commendations the demolition and schematic design of the the new student center.

As was noted in Litt's article, many parts of the design need to be worked out: materials, interior look, etc. But it will likely be a combination of brick, natural stone, glass and and metal (maybe zinc).

Can I attend by proxy? :)

If you can go back in time.

Guess I'd better get cracking on my flux-capacitor side project.

I know this was posted already a couple of days ago. This is the official PD version. Basically the same thing.

Hurray! No more fortress mentality!

"Cleveland State University has been saddled for decades with a harsh, defensive, inward-turning campus that treats the city like hostile territory."

Steven Litt has been saddled for decades with a harsh, defensive, inward-turing columns that treats the city like hostile territory.

I agree with Litt. I'm glad that CSU is taking these things into consideration and is trying to open its campus more. I think any steps towards this will make CSU a more inviting school.

Vulpster....great play with words and oh so true.

The B&N bookstore opened this past Monday.

It looks like a 2/3rd scale of the current CSU bookstore operated by Nebraska.

I saw little in  regards to regular books, but hthere was a coffee area w/$tarbucks

Oh well.

Excuse the blurry, crocked pictures. I was trying to be sneaky.

^ Always with the witty comment.. ha

I had the camera in my hand, by my side. I know I would've been harassed if I was being obvious.

It was bad enough people kept asking me if I need help.

I said, "nothing you can help me with."

Did you get a t-shirt with the new logo?

Whoa..

Cool....thank goodness they got rid of Hagar the Horrible!

I really wish CSU would consider moving away from that green. I have problems with it, for some reason.

From the legal department:

Dear Sir/Ma'am,

We are compelled to ask you to cease and desist using the term "that green."

From this point forward, please use the term CSU Green, or if desired, Pantone 342.

We appreciate your cooperation.

The Law Department.

Hahahahahahahaha .. that was pretty funny. :)

  • 2 weeks later...

in the fall of 2006, the eastern edge of the campus will have a significantly different look with three projects seeing completion.  the rec center (w/ green roof!), . . . .

What happened to the green roof on the rec center?  Has it been discarded or is it still in the works?  Looks like a white roof at the moment (certainly cooler in the summer than the black roof recently laid on the law school).

Waiting for somebody like you to give $300,000 to finish the roof. It is ready and waiting.

I wish I had $300,000 to give.  Would you take $1?

:-)

Seriously, I hope it happens.  It would be nice to see all of CSU covered in greenery.  Have to start somewhere.

CSU plans new $36 million building

Posted by Tom Breckenridge September 07, 2007 16:56PM

Cleveland State University is planning a glassy, $36 million College of Education and Human Services Building, the latest project for the redeveloping campus.

The Cleveland City Planning Commission on Friday approved schematic designs for the angular, three-story building that will front Euclid Avenue, between the Mather House and Fenn Tower...
