^I think that it would be equal to the number that we'd lose in Viking Hall.

I'm not clamoring for support on its architectural merits. I'm more worried about having to live with another surface lot at a corner.

I thought the plan was to knock it down and rebuild dorms there.

The plan is/was:

1. Build dorms on Euclid where the bookstore is.

2. Build more dorms on Chester where the surface lots are, near the soccer dome.

3. Tear down Viking Hall

4. Re-build dorms on the site of Viking Hall.

The masterplan calls for dorms on multiple sites and it was Schwartz's plan to make the campus more dormy and livable as opposed to be a suburban commuter college. Collegetown on Euclid is a private project, and the "collegetown" on Chester is supposed to be a CSU project.

according to the CSU magazine, "Perspectives" the four new dorm buildings will house 900 beds.

Those could be some decent-sized buildings. Crittenden Court, for example, is 17 stories and 208 units. Units range in size from 426 sq.ft. to 1,004 sq.ft. Granted, dorm rooms are smaller than all but the studios, but when you're talking 900 units, there might be some 10+ story buildings in that mix.

Crittenden Court.....

Hmmm... 900 beds (which sounds high for the Euclid/E. 24th site) is probably more like 300 units.  I don't think they're planning anything with real height there.  Probably more in the 4-5 story range.  Sorry to be a stick in the mud!

What bizbiz and guv said.

Oooops.  misquoted the number of beds. it's actually 600 according to the article in Summer 2008 edition of Perspective Magazine (for Alumni) in an article entitled "Welcome to the Neighborhood"

Early plans call for a 600 bed residence hall on a new E. 24th St. linking Euclid and Prospect Avenues.  The dorms will be managed by American Campus Communities of Austin, TX.  Proposed are four linked buildings with enclosed walkways and shared common areas.  The project will include a  new home for the University Admissions office and a parking garage.  It will be built in two phases around the present bookstore, with three buildings ready for occupany in fall 2010 and the final building in fall 2011.  When this project is completed, Viking Hall will be demolished.

In another part of this same section, entitled "On the Drawing Boards' is Varsity Village - a student residential community that will encircle a new $4M baseball field to be built on Chester Ave on 18 acres of land that now holds about 2000 parking spaces in surface lots.

My turn at "oops!" I read 900 units, not beds. Since it's beds and only 600 of them, that's nothing huge. But if they're in one building, that could still be decent-sized.

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

^Doesn't it say four linked buildings? So it probably won't be very large.

My school just completed a new dorm that is rather long and has 350 beds.  It is 5 stories tall.  Depending on the layout of the buildings, there's a chance we might see something decently sized.  It definitely wouldn't be 10 stories, but we could end up with a small group of decent size buildings there.

Well if we're looking for a comparison, isn't 600 beds roughly equal to half of Case's North Quad?  That is still a substantial project, if you ask me.

it is substantial, but it won't be more than 4 or 5 stories.  The big detail to me is how it will address both Euclid & Prospect Avenues (will it better connect Walker Weeks to campus?) and this new E. 24th street.  I have high hopes!

That was the plan before I left. CSU was actually in some very early discussion regarding the purchase of Walker Weeks this time last year.

Damn!

I didn't think they were going to go through with it. At least it won't be placed on Euclid Ave next to the Urban College like it was originally proposed.

Didn't I post some renderings I made showing how the Politician would look next to various areas of the campus?

If not, I will look for them in my archives and (re)post.

If I remember right you hinted about something going in the Urban College plaza, but I believe I remember you posting renderings of the wind spire in different locations.  (btw what happened with that?)

When I left last fall it was in litigation. Something about trademarks and a battle between the professor who publicly proposed it and a former colleague who claims they thought it up.

Or something like that.

I found the files. I need to upload them to Flickr first, then I will post the renderings.

This is awesome! One of my favorite pieces of public art that has been sitting in a field of overgrown grass where nobody could appreciate it! I am assuming the new location is the the SW corner of Chester/18 which is basically right in front of the Business Building at the pocket park in front of the parking deck.

Ok folks, here are renderings from the study i did looking for the best location to put the sculpture.

One of the first places I looked at was the land north of the new rec center. It is owned by ODOT and supposedly is to remain green space in perpetuity.

This first one is located near the center of the parcel and running track.

This version shows the sculpture closer to the Chester/East 24th corner.

This is in front of the Communication building. This was quickly ruled out as there are plans (sometime in the future???) to have new construction here.

Then I thought how funny it would be to put it in the parking lot next to the brand spanking new Administration Center - I was not even allowed to put that option in the final report.

These next three are on the NW and NE corners of Chester and 18th.

First a couple from behind the Business College, next to the West Parking Garage.

And this is behind the Law Library. I believe this is the spot it will go. It is also the spot my report said would be the best location. So I guess what I'm saying is, you can all thank me for not letting this go On Euclid Avenue next to the Urban College.

It's too bad the wheels on it don't actually work, then it could roll around the campus as mobile public art.  But I guess you got the best (stationary) site for it, Musky.

That thing is so disgusting. Throw it in the lake.

^ What is disgusting about it? Do you know the story behind it and the deep meaning it displays? To me, that is a masterpiece.

well its really hard to read the plaque when driving by at 35 mph.....

Actually, I do not know what it means.

I'm just being snarky.

The first time I saw 'The Politician' I nearly drove off the road. It's one of those pieces that grows on you the more you see it. I can't wait for it to be moved to CSU where people will actually walk by and enjoy it.

Personally I am amazed by the transformation of CSU during the three years I have lived in Cleveland. When I first arrived the campus looked like an embassy in a hostile country or a soviet work project. Now that its starting to resemble a modern urban college campus, and the only thing missing (in my mind) are a few impressive pieces of public art.

Maybe they can make one called the lobbyist to compliment the politician.

I, personally, love this thing. It's gaudy. It's brash. It's awesome.

I was wondering if CSU was considering constructing some kind of plaza type of thing to provide more of a public space around the sculpture? Or is it just being plopped on a lawn like in the photos? It would be great to have it become a type of public gathering space.

Are there long term plans in the CSU master plan to use this lawn?  Certainly something can go there someday, no?

It looks like a giant multicoloured Barney in a wheelchair. You can ~explain~ art until you're blue in the face, but unless it's even a bit aesthetically pleasing, no one is going to care.

Uh, it looks like a giant multicoloured Barney in a wheelchair.

Are you saying you don't "loves it"?  The irony!

Wow. I'd have to say that's wrong.

I imagine there would be a plaza of some sorts. Did you know the sculpture is actually interactive? There is a button you can push and its starts talking to you. What does it say you ask? Gibberish... just like the real thing.

Of course you would not know that because its current location is not the most pedestrian friendly, for one. And it is currently not functioning. In fact, all 20+ tons of it (yes, I said 20) is in a complete state of disrepair. The Beak is broken; paint is faded; rust throughout. The spinning wheels are the only part of it that still "works."

If you click on the link with the powerpoint presentation, you will see detailed photos showing the disrepair.

The Master Plan has this staying as green space, but there was very early discussion with some of the faculty about possibly expanding the Urban College to create a lab along the lines of Kent's UDC. But that was before last year's financial issues and is likely nowhere near being on anyone's radar.

are there plans to restore the piece?

There is no other way to go about it. It is going to have to be taken apart first. There is no way they can move the whole sculpture in one piece. Plus, there is the foundation issue that is going to be need to hold the 20+ tons of art.

IMO, CWRU should be helping with this restoration since their engineering department/students created much of the inner workings.

actually i think it looks great with it all broken, i mean thats kind of the point of the thing anyway isnt it? hah.

And Zaceman reappears after a long hibernation!

Zaceman! I remember him!! ;)

Un an off topic note, I have often thought of creating a thread that is in search of lost forumers.  Recently, two past Cleveland staples zaceman and ferarri enzo have popped up.

Now, back to Cleveland State.

Well, I took a few months off myself while my brain was on vacation. Still is, but I appear to be operating normally.

And welcome back, Musky. We should do lunch or coffee again.

Sounds good. Whatever happened top the monthly get together?

And to bring this back, groundbreaking for the College of Education building will be August 20 at 4:00 PM.

MayDay is the UO appointment secretary. And I need to step aside before I get bitch-slapped....
