^But those look like two nearly full blocks! Where will all the recruiters from Eaton and Progressive park when trying to recruit new college graduates???

Under the new Student Center there is a visitors lot which puts a recruiter right in the middle of campus.

Whats the bottom floor going to be? I looks like ther could be retail, but im not sure.

My understanding is that the plan has always been to put CSU offices on the ground floor facing Euclid.  I believe that these could be modified as storefronts at some future date if the market demanded it.

Great find! I'm trying to picture where some of the non-CSU stuff would be built (let's not spend a lot of time on that here in this thread -- in fact, if you know, post it the appropriate thread or make a new one).

It will be interesting to see how the student housing will mesh with the Greyhound station next door.

^Damn can I live there. Seriously though can we line the streets throughout the downtown area with these, for rental and for sale units. I believe they would be snapped up by those looking to live in the city.

We need these badly, and not just for students.

It's alright, I'm not petty. For everyone to enjoy!

I would live there too, especially if the area gets anymore built up.

That area around CSU is becoming more and more attractive everyday.

look someone learned how to use Revit!

for student housing, everything looks great. I would be surprised if they got that level of FF&E in there though.

floor plans are very well thought out, and the space will be nice. Though I could be nit-picky at some of the room sizes, the layout is something I havent seen. Good work on that part.

That 3 story building next to rascal house, built in 1910, is most likely history. :-(

why? is it condemned? unuseable? there MUST be a reason, the thing is beautiful and historic..

this fails 2 of the 4 goals of their plan which was to add sustainability, and to add uniqueness/sense of place.

horrible...  if they think they are following the U of Cinci example, they are absolutely failing.

What's the timeline for these buildings again?  They make me all giddy about my 'hood.

Please say soon!

Sorry guys, but these designs by Dimit were part of a proposed project near CSU by a private developer. The project is dead. This is not part of CSU's varsity village.

I didn't think they were, cause I had thought that was a couple blocks further east.

Any chance they are just on hold due to the economy? And where was the project on that site labeled "new urban brownstones" supposed to be built? That looks really cool!

Went to the Moe's in parma last night and asked the district manager there when the CSU one is opening up - he indicated the grand opening is February 17th!

Here are a few pictures of the new dorms. Not the best pictures but the best I could at the time.

Thanks ClevelandOhio!

That would be highly upsetting. It's a Walker Weeks-designed building. Here's some history on it that I dug up while a student at CSU:

Built 1927; Originally the home of  the Wolfe Music Company

1940 - Accounting office for Henry M. Groves.

1951 - National Cash Register Company

1965 - Cooper School of Art

1996 - Kinkos Copy Center

1998 - Building became vacant

A significant enough example of the work of Walker and Weeks that it was featured in "The Architectural Revue of the Mississippi Basin" (Summer issue, 1930, vol 1, No. 1). At least one previous proposal to tear the building down was rejected by the Planning Commission.

Thanks, Blinker... I have been trying to make noise of this, but so far no response from anyone at Levine College of Urban Affairs. It is one of my most treasured buildings in Cleveland.. because my dad went to Cooper School of Art (the entire school was in that one little building!). I am out of state, for now, but would like to get into this issue. Would a letter to the editor of The Cauldron be enough to raise some attention?

At least one previous proposal to tear the building down was rejected by the Planning Commission.

Can you or someone else find out why by calling Planner Gary Newbacher at the Planning Commission 216-664-2210 x3463? I think it's important to find this out because city commissions follow precedence. If there were a good reason for rejecting demolition before, it's probably still a good reason today.

I wonder what it looks like inside and what condition it is in. It doesn't look like it is that bad of shape

Has Viking Hall cleared out yet?  I would imagine the W-W building is "in the way" of developing something big on that block.  No reference to it or the Rascal House building in the 2009 Master Plan.  Bob Keiser - Landmarks Commission Secretary - would also be a good place to start with questions about the building.  He's very knowledgeable and accessible.

I know they are auctioning off equipment inside Viking Hall. My guess is they are emptying it out now.

the most recent plan shows that block cleared and a "Global Sustainable Center" built on the block.  It's posted upthread.

<b>Cleveland State University to close Solon academic center this Fall</b>

SOLON, Ohio - Due to a nearly 70 percent drop in enrollment from its highest point 18 months ago, Cleveland State University has decided to close its Solon academic center this Fall.

The center, located on the second floor of the Centre Point Building at 34055 Solon Road, has three full-time employees, eight classrooms, a computer lab and student lounge.

Several factors created the decline in enrollment...

The end of last week and now tonight, I see that the lights are on in the ground floor of that infill University Lofts bldg (next to the B&N campus bookstore).

There is some construction equipment and building supplies in there but I havent been able to find anything out.

Building a Dynamic Campus Neighborhood

The transformation of CSU

</b>

While most of the publicity surrounding the new development projects underway in downtown Cleveland has focused on big-ticket items like the proposed casino, convention center and medical mart, Cleveland State University has slowly but surely been undergoing a dramatic expansion that is turning its once-staid environs into a traditional, urban-style campus with a lively, neighborhood feel.

And because its expansion involves bringing in significant numbers of students, staff and others to actually live downtown, it can be argued that what CSU is doing with its transformation is as important in revitalizing Cleveland’s core as are the higher-profile projects.....

Perhaps the most innovative and exciting project undertaken by CSU will break ground this summer: a $50 million mixed-use residential and retail development on the north side of campus with an estimated 230 market-rate, two and three bedroom apartments geared to grad students, young professors and, according to Mosbrook, “anyone who wants to live in a campus environment and take advantage of the numerous events and activities at the university.”

"CSU is getting bigger, smarter, and younger"

I nearly fell out of my chair.  So used to the we are getting smaller, dumber, and older meme of the PD, I suppose.

Great to hear about the upcoming groundbreaking for the North Campus mixed use project.  Where exactly will tis go?

Is it the varsity village without the field?

We actually have a specific thread for it as well.  Maybe a mod could put the posts above in that thread?

http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,23123.0.html

Actually, I combined the Varsity Village thread with this one. We need to have fewer threads, and since Varsity Village is a CSU development, it probably ought to go here.

From the CoolCleveland.com article regarding Euclid Commons:

"When phase two of this project is completed this fall, another 800 students will be added to the “living-on-campus” number..."

Bridgeview and The Bingham combined have about 600 units, so this gives you an idea on the impact Euclid Commons could have on the downtown residential population and the CSU neighborhood.

Do they count CSU students in the census? If I remember correctly, I think we talked about it and it was said that they do not count. If not, you can add on an additional 1,800 people to the number for a large chunk of the year.

I think they do. I think when I filled out my census last year, i used my kent address

I was at Cleveland State today. I read this student article about Euclid Commons and it answers what the first floor is going to be.

Euclid Commons on schedule

Second phase to be complete by August 1

Looming large and incomplete just across from Julka hall, it stands; a striking amalgamation of steel scaffolding, exposed insulation and construction equipment. For the thousands of students who walk or drive past it every day, the new Euclid Commons construction project is difficult to ignore. But what exactly is the status of Cleveland State University's most visible construction project?

These dorms are a big thing for the city.  270 more downtown people living downtown is a big step.

Is my math off?  I thought this was supposed to be a net gain, but with Viking Hall closing (300 residents), how does adding 270 in Euclid Commons result in a gain?

In the previous article I posted this was said...

"When phase two of this project is completed this fall, another 800 students will be added to the “living-on-campus” number, bringing the total to about 1800 staying in official residential facilities — or nearly double the current figure."
