April 5, 200718 yr That is something I keep meaning to find out more concrete information about. If Lewis decides to shell out $ 5 million for the Visual Arts building, does he get a say on who designs a building and where it is located?
April 18, 200718 yr 5cents GS-OMG r u serious. This design is hideous at best, perhaps what you make after you have lost half your leggos and are stuck with a moon buggy wheel, a pirate ship keel and few misc arms and parts of a transformer. Where is the refinement, the elegance, the avant garde. Why replace brutalism with much the same, put as much glazing on the ham as you want, it's still a pig. Perhaps Musky can resurrect the CUDC/Graduate Design projects for said corner of Cleveland done last summer and presented to CSU, GS, Schmitgen et al. and post. At the least there are 16 or so free ideas and talking points, since right now GS is seriously lacking and perhaps laughing after a bitter contract dispute. Why they even got the gig after all that fathoms most intelligent minds in town. CSU & Cleveland enjoy the leftover geometric salad GS serves you, eat it and enjoy 40 more years of indigestion. WRL-The renderings are hardly innovative, (COOP, Zaha, and about 15 other dutch and European wannabes) and perhaps even more brutal than what's there. Why all glimmering night shots? Perhaps daytime is a shaded dark imposing mass. Look beyond the people and electronics at the form and massing. Where are the winter refuge areas? The pedestrian streetscape breaks? The greenscape? The rythmic door fronts of every successful urban fabric? The Euclid ribbon CSU is so fond of? Is this Program CSU really needs or wants or more Cleveland snake oil (Pei, Erieview etc). NBBJ's little sister WRL portends to be Cleveland's visionary soothsayers yet relegates to portraying Arch Record knockoffs at every turn as their unique vision. Perhaps THEY should work with GS!! Clevelanders, stop the cowering, wavering, spoonfed submissive design process. It wreaks of desperation and is lagging in inspiration. Stand up and get what you want. Or enjoy GS' Dyson vacuum inspired Student Center continuing to suck the life out of Euclid. As for local design competition, if you haven't heard by now, a 2 young locals were tired of complaining and decided to act www.clevelandcompetition.com awake on the lake, r u?
April 18, 200718 yr ^^Who is this guy, Paul Volpe? If you would look at the previous posts on the WRL CSU project you will see 5 or 6 day shots. And NBBJ takes a front seat to nobody, just look at their proposal for CSU...
April 23, 200718 yr The Law Building renovation and construction project officially is underway as of today.... if you care.
April 23, 200718 yr of course we care, this is Urbanohio.com for gosh sakes! by the way, i don't see anything going on with the exterior ( I can see the facade from my office window). any word on when that will start?
April 25, 200718 yr ^I know everyone cares (except for those from other schools) :-D When I say the project has started, I am referring to staging. The fences are mostly up. There is need for placement and relocation of dumpsters. The trailers need to come in. Most of the really noisy, dirty stuff is going to wait until after the semester.
April 25, 200718 yr Finally have the most up to date renderings of the new College of Education. This project is slated to begin this fall. Site Plan showing partial green roof Aerial perspective Euclid Avenue perspective
April 25, 200718 yr I think the bigger question is, why is the rendering shown in Miami? And they just couldn't bring the building right up to the sidewalk, always have to have that 5' buffer. What the shit? Otherwise I'm a fan.
April 25, 200718 yr Is there a Euclid entrance? Will the green roofs be open for people to go on, or are they going to be offlimits? Not bad overall, but I agree with w28th that the 5' buffer is really unnecessary in a downtown location. Edit- one of your flickr sets actually showed up for me, Musky!
April 25, 200718 yr I'm pleasantly surprised- not bad at all. But definitely needs an entrance on Euclid. At this point, Euclid is the main (only?) organizing element of the whole CSU jumble, so you can't just treat it like something to look at from inside. I'm willing to forgive the buffer though- too narrow to be suburban IMHO, and I have nothing against a little slice of green. Looks like there's plenty of room for future expansion in the rear too. By the way, what's the weird corridor thingy north the "East Garden".
April 26, 200718 yr First - I forgot to mention these are not 100% complete drawings. There will likely be some changes before the start of construction. I am not completely sure on the green 'buffer,' but I think it has to do with LEED points. Otherwise, the setback follows along the whole Euclid side of the campus. Think of the immediate context. Fenn Tower is right up to the sidewalk -> COE set back ~5' -> Mather Mansion set back many feet with pocket park -> Freeway. In this case, the set back is appropriate and contributes to the Euclid Ribbon portion of the master plan. There is a Euclid entrance. It did not show up well in the Site Plan. I went back to the book to check out and the results are below. First floor circulation plan Euclid Avenue elevation There will never be an expansion in the ear unless the Health Sciences building was to be removed. They (and other stakeholders on campus) were very outspoken about retaining and enhancing the green space between the two buildings. I think the 'corridor' thingy is an ADA ramp. Not sure. One more rendering showing the view coming from Fenn Tower.
April 26, 200718 yr Thanks so much for the images, Musky. I'm still disappointed in this building's Euclid Avenue presence. To add life to Euclid Avenue, the facade should be transparent, finely detailed and have lots of doors. From the renderings it looks like none of those conditions will be met. It'll be essentially a blank wall. Does CSU hold any public meetings on their design plans? Or is there any other way to express these views to them? Thanks!
April 26, 200718 yr I'm seeing a "screen" similar to the NY Times Tower by Renzo Piano... and I'm not sure if that's a good thing. clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
April 26, 200718 yr Yeah, thanks Musky for sharing these. I see now the Health Sciences building back there- on the site plan, I couldn't make out the "B" and thought it was just more empty plaza space. That "Euclid entrance" looks more like access to the side plaza entrance which is better than nothin', but still not a big glowing lobby facing the street. Over all though, I still like the bldg. Even though slatted, the Euclid facade looks pretty transparent. Assuming none of that glass is reflective...
April 26, 200718 yr I'm not really a big fan of the screens that seem to be getting plopped onto buildings lately, either. Is there a practical function to them?
April 26, 200718 yr I absolutely agree. Its as if architects have found a new toy that one guy did well and now we've got a bunch of copycats who incorporate them poorly.
April 26, 200718 yr I don't know that they are necessarily done bad on this particular building. The key is that they don't become too large or closely spaced, like the louvres on an 80's Trans Am.
April 26, 200718 yr "I'm not really a big fan of the screens that seem to be getting plopped onto buildings lately, either. Is there a practical function to them?" They reduce sun glare and heat by providing shade, which reduces the need for air conditioning, and that applies toward a LEED rating. Aesthetically, they're supposed to read as a "diaphonus" screen but that doesn't always happen. clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
April 26, 200718 yr Honestly, I'm pretty confused. That's ok. You graduate in about three weeks. I wish I was. I'm part time.

May 14, 200718 yr It looks like the law school work is being done at night -- no activity during the day and there is a generator-powered bank of lights on site. Still in demolition phase. I noticed that they have poured 3x6 concrete pads inset into the park between the law school and urban design college -- anyone know what these are for?
May 14, 200718 yr I noticed that they have poured 3x6 concrete pads inset into the park between the law school and urban design college -- anyone know what these are for? i think these are the stamped concrete pads for new benches. there are a few off of euclid as well.
May 14, 200718 yr Law classes will end this week, so look for more day work to happen - campus wide. I will post a few pictures soon. The pads are for memory benches, or something along that kind of name. They are not part of the Euclid Corridor project.
May 18, 200718 yr Maybe I missed it, but is there a site from CSU that lists all the construction projects with their status/pictures? I know when I went to University of Dayton for undergrad, they had a similar webpage for their projects.

Yes, do a search on CSU or Cleveland State University and it will show the university's master plan.
June 5, 200718 yr Latest schematic drawings of the student center. We are at 80%. We should be at 100% by the end of July. You will notice many voices have been heard regarding the "bulge" on top. So far, the exterior is pointing to a mostly brick finish. Euclid Avenue
June 6, 200718 yr Anyone have any updated pictures of the law building renovation? I know the inner-link was recently closed for a majority of a day.
June 6, 200718 yr I will by Friday. But there really isn't much to see. It is mostly all demo work at this point. Almost all of the Brick Veneer has been removed from the Euclid side if the building.
June 8, 200718 yr man, that garden room was a thing to behold! I guess i'm liking the progress on the student center, but it's still a bit "eh," if you know what I mean.
June 8, 200718 yr man, that garden room was a thing to behold! I guess i'm liking the progress on the student center, but it's still a bit "eh," if you know what I mean. Dude, where the hell have you been?
June 8, 200718 yr (^he got married, me thinks) Anyone have any updated pictures of the law building renovation? I know the inner-link was recently closed for a majority of a day. As promised:
June 8, 200718 yr ^ Nice pictures, I'll be down there tomorrow morning for class so I'm going to do some snooping around after, I'll let everyone know if I can find anything interesting.
June 12, 200718 yr Besides the obvious removal of the exterior, they seem to be moving the inner link closer to the Chester end of the building, they're removing and replacing all the windows too. This must be a quick project because one of my classes in the fall is scheduled on the 2nd floor of the law building.
June 13, 200718 yr It appears construction is starting on College Town. Work has begun on a building located at 2020 Euclid Avenue by Marous Brothers. The building was built 1910 and has a current market value of nearly $500K million. It is owned by Bedo, LCC, but I cannot find any information on who they are. I have a message to somebody I know for more information regarding the project. The one thing I do know is that college town is supposed to start construction this summer. This came from Paul Volpe. Further posting when more information is available, but for now: Rendering by City Architecture

Now just hold on one second. How come we haven't heard anything about this? Is this a "renovate building #1 in 2007, then building #2 in 2009" type of deal? Musky, did you mean $500k instead of $500 million? If not, then I want to see that building's interior.
