Just to clarify - this is not a CSU project.

"College town" often refers to districts where development is geared more towards students, graduates, and young professionals. Lexington's "college town," for instance, encompasses several blocks from the university to the downtown. As a result of the plan, we have had several new warehouse to loft conversions that target not only students, but to young professionals and even the baby boomers. Eateries include Fazoli's, Firehouse Subs, various clubs and bars, and the like. You get the picture.

There is also one planned for the Case area, although I don not recall at the moment if it has the same name.

I "stumbled" across a planning study of sorts that was done a year ago by City Architecture in conjunction with CSU. For those who have poor connection - I apologize for the following 19 images.

Thanks. I've also heard that downtown districts often have office workers and that neighborhoods sometimes feature single family homes.  ;)

Nice! But I'm still waiting for the obligatory "this project sucks because (insert reason)" comment.

Here is Lexington's College Town guidelines, which is very similar in style to Cleveland's. Too bad we have nowhere the density that the photos above exhibit.

this is pretty awesome, whenever i walk that back alley near peabody's i always wish it were more in use for pedestrians.  this is some nice urban infill

City Architecture/Paul Volpe is the worst.  Glad to see this project get some legs though.

w28th,

Its not like Volpe did any real design work here. It looks like a simple concept plan with renovation and some infill. Considering that there is diverse ownership, its not certain that CA will even do any of the architectural work on this plan.

If there is anything that i've learned from young architects, its that they hate everyone else's work.

Event scheduling in University Center has been extended to December 29, 2007.

Abatement begins January 17, 2008 with demolition commencing May 2008.

That's because 99.9% of everyone's work is uninspired garbage that is nothing more than replications of past work that they have done.

Why is it when architects are critical of project design on this site, so many people get defensive about it?  Having a dialogue on how to move this city forward in terms of design entails having opinions on what is proposed, and not accepting the status-quo bulls%#t from architects like Paul Volpe that has plagued us for the past 50 years.  Personally, I'm not content with just having things built, and hopefully this project doesn't become Volpe typical "style."

I want developments like this to come to fruition, don't get me wrong, but they can be done in a way that represents the progress of contemporary design.  Combine this project done the right way, with the CSU Visual Arts Center, Euclid Corridor and the new Law Building (notice the Student Center is not mentioned) and this area of the city really has something going here.

I have a message to somebody I know for more information regarding the project. The one thing I do know is that college town is supposed to start construction this summer.

Confirmed - First Phase!

^What does the first phase consist of.

Apparently 2020 Euclid Avenue.

dunno.gif

Actually, that was all of the information they were willing to give me.

I also tried somebody at Marous, but they have not called back.

Who is the developer?

All of the information previously given in this thread is the most accurate.

Can I say that right now I am crapping my pants over some news just given to me.

This is HUGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Big time news.

But I am not allowed to say anything.

Let's see  - how can I put this?

First - what is one of the mot request things we wish were downtown?

Next:  this will be the first national retailer to move back to Euclid Avenue since... I don't know when.

Next: It will open in about five weeks.

I think that is all I can say... sorry.

This is so f-ing cool!!!!!!

Next: It will open in about five weeks.

It's that big and will only take 5 weeks to open?

Construction has been going on for several weeks now. The parking lot next to it has been closed since the semester was over.

^ musky, you already scored the td and the extra 2ptr with all the news about movement on collegetown....and now you leave us with hangin this???

do make a new thread for it when you can announce it. hmmm. a new dept store in higbees? may? rascal house is expanding (hee ha)? whatver, i get the picture. good news for sure. i hope the residential development can keep moving forward to give it a lot of downtown neighborhood support.

Gee. "That's because 99.9% of everyone's work is uninspired garbage [...] Having a dialogue on how to move this city forward in terms of design..."

Basically, everyone else's work really, really sucks?

A building just does not have character and charm "out of the box." That takes years and years of maintenance, upkeep by various tenants, redecorating it to match the decade, etc. Do you really think that buildings of the 1900s really looked all the unique, given that they were fairly bland back then? Judging from old photographs that I've seen and scanned in, houses in Ironton, Ohio and Portsmouth, Ohio -- built in the 1920s and 1930s, were fairly templated, uninspiring and boring. It's after years of different owners, ideas, renovations, and additions, that the building matures. Same with downtown properties and new development projects.

If this development project looks a little 'bland' or 'uninspiring' -- then perhaps it does! It may look too 'new' or too 'clean', but thats because many were neglected and need major overhauls, or are being built from scratch and need time. Perhaps the streetscape is changing, with the addition of trees, benches, and what have you -- but of course, that needs maturing as well.

C'mon contractors, finish up that cement work on Euclid.

^oops. oh yeah.

Tenants do not like to have their retail name thrown out this early in the game for various reasons. It'll probably be announced a few weeks before its set to open.

It must be something small or else it would take a much longer time.

or it is occupying a nearly ready space (aka 515 euclid?).  we've heard about people having leases on some of this empty space, so maybe they are finally ready to make a move.

any hints on the type of retail?

(hoping) that this new store will be a BARNEY's Co-op, since its right next to CSU.

hum... by a college... urban outfitters!

A 24 hour restaurant or like FG said a Urban outfitter, or a Barnes & Noble/Borders express.

^A Waffle House...

Can you answer this - Is it unique to the region, or are there already a few/several of this retailer already in the suburbs.

yes

no

yes

Since you say it is not unique to the region, I would have to say a national bookstore chain...express variety.

I can neither confirm, nor deny that report.

I can neither confirm, nor deny that report.

I'll take that as a yes, good news indeed!

Wasn't the CSU bookstore bought or ran by Barnes and Noble or Borders for some time and they were going to redo the bookstore?  I know I heard that from somewhere. I wouldn't be surprised if it turned into a full blown national bookstore - besides "CSU Bookstore"

I just don't see this being a bookstore.. anything added is good for Euclid Ave. and to keep me from being bored between classes.

True - we have a Borders in Tower City already and musky said it is something people have been wanting downtown for a while now.....i still see the CSU bookstore being taken over by a Follett's or Borders, etc.

The new University Center will have a large bookstore in it once it opens in a few years. Nebraska Books, correct?

Could be a Barnes & Noble. Retailers don't stray too far from their competition.

You are correct.

Nebraska was signed on last year.

They are in contract with CSU for the new student center and have most of their floor plan established.

So unique to the region means it couldn't be borders or Barnes & Noble doesn't it?

A Chipotle?!  Everyone wants one of those downtown - just another idea

This new business is going into the space Marous is working on, or another space?

I'm pretty sure he's talking about the Marous space.

I've always wanted a Priscilla's or Hustler's near a college campus. Maybe an Adult World store.

Filene's Basement?? ive seen one in new york in a similar type of building.

Whoever it is, hopefully they are successful and that success entices other big names to flock up and down Euclid. I know thats getting ahead of ourselves, but whatever.

I'm pretty sure he's talking about the Marous space.

Yeah, but he seems so excited, I'm having a hard time imagining what could go into that space to make one crap oneself.  That's why I though maybe something bigger.  Whatever it is, it must be some kind of wonderful thing that it can induce such incontinence in a grown man.  Maybe it's an Arby's, or a Mr. Hero's?

is it larger than a bread box?  what is this, 20 questions? lol
