September 28, 200717 yr ^college journalism... Thanks for sharing those images, Musky. I like what I'm seeing. My only initial qualm is with the two awnings over the southeast entrance? Is the second one aesthetic (for balance) or does it actually serve a purpose (shielding southern exposure from the lobby/atrium)?
September 28, 200717 yr Samantha Samuel obviously needs to get out more. "Awesome?" really Samantha? I think B&N planted her... And the big red cross? Obviously the Greater Cleveland Partnership said they would only fund College Town if they paid homage to the Cleveland+ branding campaign. I think they went a little overboard here, but what can you do? If you want to be visible to helicopter and small aircraft traffic, you've gotta be bold!
September 28, 200717 yr With personal helicopters and/or flying cars right around the bend it's just forward thinking to mark one's project in such a way. Were is the flying car parking lot, though?
September 29, 200717 yr That's what I'm saying. What are we waiting for? SOMEBODY must have the updated site plan. S O M E B O D Y
September 29, 200717 yr I do, but I don't want to pre-empt an article I'm working on. After all, Crain's and the PeeDee peruse this site... "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
September 29, 200717 yr I'm guessing that both of you, when not on urbanohio, like to find chained dogs and then place raw steak just beyond the reach of their chain. Just a guess.
September 29, 200717 yr That's what I'm saying. What are we waiting for? SOMEBODY must have the updated site plan. S O M E B O D Y Does it now include the University of Akron?? ;)
September 30, 200717 yr From Litt's blog: New "collegetown'' quietly launched on Euclid Avenue opposite Cleveland State University Posted by Plain Dealer Architecture Critic Steven Litt September 28, 2007 17:10PM When developers launch a big project in Cleveland, they usually hire a publicist, call a press conference and do a "rollout" complete with photo-ops with political officials and snazzy artists' renderings of architecturally dramatic buildings... More at: http://blog.cleveland.com/architecture/2007/09/when_developers_launch_a_big.html
September 30, 200717 yr Isn't the rendering j73 posted, showing buildings on the NORTH side of Euclid?
October 1, 200717 yr Also, how does this wider vision of College Town (south side of Euclid from E. 18th to the Innerbelt) gel with the Cleveland District of Design, which was proposing showrooms in roughly the same footprint? Are they engaged in the planning process around ground-level retail? Anyone hear anything about the District recently? They've been quiet for quite a while now (last I had heard, they were on an 11-day trip to I believe Sweden to seek out design-associated businesses, but that was in August).
October 3, 200717 yr Jeez, Musky ... you sure are doing a lot of posting today in other threads ... today being Wednesday ... Wednesday being the day you were going to give more info on College Town. Ahem.
October 3, 200717 yr Actually, I was going to post the image of College Town - at the same time of my article's publication. But I got slammed with other news this week, so no article. I will post the image anyway when I get home. It's a neat little site plan. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
October 3, 200717 yr Not really.... Here are the articles I wrote for this week: Lakewood wards 2/3 council primary election. Lakewood mayoral primary. Hopkins Airport police reassignment. Recall attempt against Councilman Santiago. Lakewood shooting follow-up. Fairview Park school demolitions. Civil war encampment in Tremont this weekend. Zoo gets $1 million for new elephant exhibit. The last two were actually pretty cool ones to write. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
October 3, 200717 yr Yeah, but I was going to post a larger version so you all could read stuff... :-P "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
October 3, 200717 yr Yeah, but I was going to post a larger version so you all could read stuff... :-P please do.
October 3, 200717 yr It'll have to wait until I get home, unless Musky can get to it first. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
October 3, 200717 yr But the gist is a new street that looks like it will spill out at about E. 19th on Euclid and across from the Wolstein Center on Prospect, with a reconfigured Swingos Court running the length from E. 18th to E. 21st, right?
October 3, 200717 yr Correct. The streets will be one way. Which way they go will be determined. Larger shot -
October 3, 200717 yr Ahhh ... and the infamous Wright Center, too. Is that a wind spiral in the center? :-)
October 3, 200717 yr Latest and greatest on the Student Center - the egg is gone! (sorry for the crappy scans)
October 4, 200717 yr I'm assuming that this is the ground floor plan. The parking areas are actually parts of structures, correct?
October 4, 200717 yr ^I think. They say parking garage in them. I guess I was looking at 2010, specifically. That's where they just got the $800k from the County for development, correct?
October 4, 200717 yr 2010 is currently a parking garage for Brothers. It will remain a garage - although slightly reconfigured when complete. They are the ones who received the county cash.
October 4, 200717 yr correct me if I'm wrong here, but it looks like there is only one set of doors on Euclid Avenue.
October 4, 200717 yr Thats what it looks like to me. Although there are two entrances to the pub plus two walkways that lead to the back.
October 4, 200717 yr It seems that there would be a nice opportunity with the cafe to encourage people to congregate in front of the building on Euclid, but if there are no doors there, then everyone will be inside. It would be a travesty if what we get out of this is another hulking building fronting Euclid with only one entry point and thus no activity on the sidewalk. I understand the desire to create activity on the rear side where the new plaza is, but if this thing can't boost interaction with Euclid Avenue, then we've really blown it.
October 4, 200717 yr The area directly outside (se, adjacent to East 22) of the pub is all outdoor seating. The other two polygons south of the building are grass for now, but are candidates for the percent for art program.
October 4, 200717 yr Yes. This would mean goodbye to Best Steak building. well as long as they keep the one in east cleveland. cheeseburger cheeseburger!
October 5, 200717 yr Here is another, coming East down Euclid: What ever happened to this renderring that X posted a long while ago for the Student Center. I really like it.
October 5, 200717 yr That was from the original planning study. It was never meant to be the final concept.
October 5, 200717 yr I don't know how we all missed this on Litt's blog: http://blog.cleveland.com/architecture/ Cleveland State's College of Education shaping up as a solid background player -- not a star Posted by Plain Dealer Architecture Critic Steven Litt October 01, 2007 16:07PM Categories: Architecture A recent rendering shows the latest design refinements for the new College of Education and Human Services building at Cleveland State University. Cleveland State University is setting up a clear hierarchy on Euclid Avenue with two big, new projects. Designs for the new College of Education and Human Services, which will be located at Euclid Avenue and East 25th Street -- now being refined by the Columbus office of NBBJ -- show that the building will be a supporting player, not a star...
October 9, 200717 yr Editorial: Collegetown would solidify Cleveland State University's neighborhood Tuesday, October 09, 2007 Some of the redevelopment near Cleveland State University isn't as much about what's coming down as it is about what's going up - and through. Collegetown, as the area envisioned is called, would be a continuous, half-mile strip of four- to five-story new and renovated apartment buildings from East 18th Street east to the Inner Belt, that dovetails with existing structures, such as Trinity Cathedral and CSU's new administrative center... more at: http://www.cleveland.com/editorials/plaindealer/index.ssf?/base/opinion/119191947027050.xml&coll=2
October 22, 200717 yr And the process begins... The University Center Parking Lot (visitor and handicapped parking) will be closed from Monday October 22, 2007 to December 9, 2007 due to infrastructure demolition and repair. There will be no access to the UC Parking area during this time, although the docks for UC and RT will remain opened. Visitor parking for that time period will be relocated to the southern section of Lot S3 located on E. 22nd Street between Chester and Payne Avenues. Additional handicapped spaces have been added in the UPF Garage (ground and plaza levels) located on E. 21st Street between Euclid and Chester Avenues. Any drop offs must use the area adjacent to the Rhodes Tower dock area that can be accessed off E. 22nd Street. Individuals with handicap lift vans are encouraged to use Lot "CC" in the front of the Music and Communication Building that is designated for handicapped parking only. Please contact John M. Oden at x2045 with questions.
October 24, 200717 yr ^^I like the backside of the student center a lot more than the Euclid side. Would be nice if the two facades could be reversed. This building flirts with Euclid without asking it out on a date. Tease.
