March 31, 200817 yr re site location: Straphanger, are you saying that the WC is poorly located in context to the rest of the city or are you saying that it simply wastes a lot of space within its block? Just that it wastes a lot of space within its block and, urban design-wise, does nothing for the area. It's set behind a mote of landscaping and service drives on every side. It could have engaged Prospect and 18th Street in a really nice way. Maybe then the walk from PHS garages wouldn't seem so far... It's all especially frustrating now that collegetown is launching. Really, it just reminds me how excellent the urban design for Gateway was (aside from the High St. parking garage). No complaints about the parking deck at CSU though- I hear ya that it's clearing the way for redevelopment of more surface lots.
March 31, 200817 yr Generally speaking, the goal of the new parking garages that CSU will be building is to replace surface lots that will be built on. If you read the master plan literature, it talks about this. I understand that, but those parking garages aren't really need if you look at the bigger picture. I'm just venting and cranky.
April 2, 200817 yr I understand that, but those parking garages aren't really need if you look at the bigger picture. I'm just venting and cranky. If it's any consolation, when we have our conventions at the Wolstein center, we're encouraged to drop off our elderly ones at the door and walk from the lots...which I do with lots of vigor!
April 2, 200817 yr Generally speaking, the goal of the new parking garages that CSU will be building is to replace surface lots that will be built on. If you read the master plan literature, it talks about this. MTS just likes to piss and moan a lot, pay no attention to him. Ha.
April 5, 200817 yr Author Here's the new bus station design I was talking about. This is located on E. 18th, just north of Euclid by the new law building addition.
April 5, 200817 yr Author Has anyone else noticed, over the years, how beautiful the landscaping is all over the main campus? I'd argue it's the most beautiful year round landscape design in the entire city. Here's a shot from a few days ago (university plaza) re: the attention to detail in trying to create eye catching and aesthetically pleasing landscapes during the winter months, a most difficult task in Cleveland!
April 5, 200817 yr Author One last shot from the top (5th floor) of the newly opened entrance to the main classroom from Chester Ave. This is the glass tower staircase attached to main classroom just west of the Rec Center and Fenn College of Engineering. The design of it references the new Rec Center and easternmost parking garage. Great view from the top!
April 5, 200817 yr It's a big inflatable dome that they place over the soccer field during the winter so that the team can train on a full field.
April 7, 200817 yr The renovation/addition to the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law (Euclid & E18th) is almost finished. I took these pics 30 min ago:
April 7, 200817 yr Does anyone know how soon work on the education building might start? I know it's "imminent", but i just keep walking by hoping to see that parking lot closed and fenced off and there are always cars in it. Just thought someone might know and actually date. EDIT: alanr, nice pics. I saw them working on saturday (yes, construction workers actually working on a saturday)... this little expansion is a vast improvement from what the building was before.
April 8, 200817 yr It really does wonders for the intersection of E. 18th & Euclid... still got a long way to go with the URBAN AFFAIRS college across the street, though.
April 11, 200817 yr As per KJP's article: Other notable real estate projects by Heartland Developers include Avalon Station in Shaker Heights, Collegetown at Cleveland State University downtown and the Cloisters in Cleveland's Slavic Village neighborhood. Construction at these sites has also stopped. http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,3594.msg275106.html#msg275106 Is this project on hold now? I am a little confused...I thought this wasn't Heartland project...Am I missing something obvious?
April 11, 200817 yr Heartland is only one of the developers involved with this project. Others include the Frangos Group and BPC Redevelopment. It isn't known yet what effect Heartland's problems will have on the overall development, but I suspect much of Collegetown will proceed with or without Heartland. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
April 11, 200817 yr I believe that Heartland has been saying for years that they would be a player in College Town. They moved out some office tenants around 3-4 years ago and have done nothing with the building ever since. I don't think that anyone was counting on Heartland to do anything in the near future.
April 14, 200817 yr Although I'm not in that loop anymore, I recall the schedule starting immediately after the spring semester ends. But the parking lots might be closed before that to start the staging setup.
April 16, 200817 yr A coming soon sign was placed on the chain link fence next to the new bookstore. There will be 8 units priced from $235,000 and realty one is handling the sales. I don't think the number of units and price were previously announced.
April 16, 200817 yr Looks like the new building as the address on the realty one website is 2030 (University Lofts is 2020 Euclid). And who want's a balcony on Euclid Avenue? I DO! From the website: UNIVERSITY LOFTS CONDOS. EIGHT UNITS FROM 235,000 TO 550,5000 IN COLLEGE TOWN, CLEVELAND STATE AREA. PRE-CONSTRUCTION PRICES. FLOOR PLANS ON-LINE, SPECIAL FINANCING. TAX ABATEMENT. CONDOS INCLUDE BALCONIES, GRANITE, HARDWOOD FLOORS, WAHSERS & DRYERS.
April 16, 200817 yr I wonder if they'll require presales before starting construction. I'm glad to hear that the prices are more moderate. I thought that we first heard 400k figures for the price points. 235 is not bad at all considering the tax abatement.
April 18, 200817 yr According to the latest issue of the "Cleveland Stater" work on the education building starts in July. I think the completion is scheduled for Fall of 2010.
April 18, 200817 yr Check out the below photo of an early Cleveland State from Clevelandmemory. I had no idea how much existing stuff the new campus wiped out- in particular, check out the line of buildings along the street that used to run between Euclid and Chester just west of the current E21. Bummer. (http://images.ulib.csuohio.edu/cdm4/item_viewer.php?CISOROOT=/herrick&CISOPTR=656&CISOBOX=1&REC=9)
April 19, 200817 yr There also used to be numerous "brownstone" type apartment buildings along Chester in the area of what is today CSU. Imagine the Avenue District multiplied by about 10 times. There's lots of rebuilding left to go before we can recover from "urban renewal." Then we can grow from where we detoured 50 years ago. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
April 22, 200817 yr yikes, I'd never seen that before! I knew there were a lot of old apartment buildings on these blocks from my review of sanborn (fire) maps from the early 1900s, but it's more powerful when you see an actual photograph...
May 6, 200817 yr Author short update on the construction timeline for the new University Center as well as info about murals from the WPA, salvaged from ValleyView in Tremont, that will be placed inside the new building at CSU. http://blog.cleveland.com/architecture/2008/04/valley_view_murals_intended_fo.html
June 17, 200816 yr They are really moving along with demolition of the old student center by the way... I haven't seen any movement on the college of education site.
June 17, 200816 yr They are really moving along with demolition of the old student center by the way... Pics?!
June 17, 200816 yr Sorry... maybe i'll start carrying my crappy camera around. I just don't want to step on mayday's toes. :)
June 18, 200816 yr Looks like they just had the Education Building up for final approval at Design Review, June 5th and the Planning Commission, June 6th along with the "Ribbon" study. http://planning.city.cleveland.oh.us/designreview/drcagenda/2008/060608.html DRC 07-098:Cleveland State University, Euclid Avenue “Ribbon Study”, Conceptual Design Report, Final Review (PLPD/Ward 13) (Fr DRAC 9/6/07) [submitted 5/28/08] DRC 07-096:2605 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland State University, College of Education & Human Services Building, Final Approval (PLPD/Ward 13) (Fr DRAC 9/6/07) [submitted 5/28/08]
June 18, 200816 yr I took some pics today (on my cell phone) Let me see what I can do.... EDIT: A few quick crappy images...then my phone was capped out of memory.. And then across the street from the University Lofts Bookstore/Brothers Printing:
June 18, 200816 yr Sorry... maybe i'll start carrying my crappy camera around. I just don't want to step on mayday's toes. :) Folks, if we're talking about regular photo updates of construction projects, I don't care if ya step on my d@mn head!!! Get out there, and get snappin*!!! *Snappin as in photo-taking, not 'Men on Films' and "two snaps and AROUND the world!"- that's MY turf. ;-) clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
June 18, 200816 yr In other news: Please note the following important updates from the Department of Parking Services: Lot Z (40) closes on June 15th permanently for construction of a new, 600-car garage on the site. Lot B (64) closes in early July permanently for construction of the College of Education building. [/quote[/size]]
June 18, 200816 yr Here's a map that labels the construction: http://www.csuohio.edu/aboutcsu/campusmap.pdf EDIT: Lot Z isn't marked as "construction" in the link yet
June 18, 200816 yr Lot Z (40) closes on June 15th permanently for construction of a new, 600-car garage on the site. I take it the RTA transit center won't be built there.
June 18, 200816 yr Lot Z (40) closes on June 15th permanently for construction of a new, 600-car garage on the site. I take it the RTA transit center won't be built there. The RTA transit center and CSU residential tower is a separate phase that goes on the north side of the lot. The parking garage with field house goes on the south side of the lot. There are a lot of pictures / plans earlier in the trhead... I believe on page 20 or right around there.
June 18, 200816 yr The garage is going to take up the southern portion of the Z lot, not the entire lot.
June 18, 200816 yr Looks like construction has begun. They took out the trees around the southern perimeter today and there are a few construction vehicles in the lot. Glad to see this moving forward.
June 18, 200816 yr What's the building marked CC-21 on the map? Vacant white building on the north side of Euclid between the new transit stations that surely makes a bad first impression on visitors. What are the plans for that building?
June 18, 200816 yr What's the building marked CC-21 on the map? The Corlett Building. What are the plans for that building? The Visual and Performing Arts Center is supposed to go on that site, I believe.
June 19, 200816 yr It's strange.. I'm excited for CSU, both for the school, campus, and the city, being an alumni. But it's hard to have that deep connection with the school, like I do with UDayton, because I went to CSU for grad school. Either way, it's good to see they have a sound strategy to get away from the commuter school image/personality they have.
June 19, 200816 yr What's the building marked CC-21 on the map? The Corlett Building. What are the plans for that building? The Visual and Performing Arts Center is supposed to go on that site, I believe. So we are losing the corlett?
June 19, 200816 yr ^I believe so, pope. I remember Virginia Benson speaking of that building a couple of semesters ago; I remember her saying that the building would be demolished for a new construction.
June 19, 200816 yr ^^Check out page 12 of this thread for some conceptual renderings of what could take its place.
June 19, 200816 yr ^^Check out page 12 of this thread for some conceptual renderings of what could take its place. Thank you very very much for the page link rather than just a "look up-thread." Those drawings on page 12 were prepared for a massing study for the new visual arts building in 2006. Does anyone have an update on the planning and/or construction process for the new visual arts building?
June 19, 200816 yr ^^Check out page 12 of this thread for some conceptual renderings of what could take its place. thanks, I always like the lil' corlett building, I guess I might missing the lil' guy.
June 19, 200816 yr My guess is that it is in the works, could happen after the current projects are completed.
June 19, 200816 yr thanks, I always like the lil' corlett building, I guess I might missing the lil' guy. Yeah, I like it too. I'd be pissed if it were knocked down for surface parking or a lame new building, but depending on how the new performing arts center turns out (if it turns out), I'll be OK with the demo. I was pretty excited by the funky conceptual massings. Thank you very very much for the page link rather than just a "look up-thread." Our threads get so, so long, so I hear ya.
June 19, 200816 yr Wasn't the main issue that they needed someone to step up with some major funding or it woudn't happen? It's not part of the master plan, right?
June 20, 200816 yr That is correct. Peter Lewis paid for the planning study. Before I left, Schwartz and the Board of Trustees were attempting to court him into providing the funds to build it. Don't know the outcome of that.
